which was a whoie daj joiaigcr , had upon

a careful , perusal of the lists of mini's. The
oalj protest filed dm Ing the daj was sub

major left his olllce and held a number ot'
cainc'st conferences with several citizens ,
the longest of which was with Colonel IHKer ,
who until a few dujs ago was pionounccd
Id his opposition to the franchises. These
conferences occupied n full hour und gave
still further emphasis to the fact that no
man had over tried more carnestlj to as
certain the desires of his constituency than
Maj'or Caraon has done trom the beginning
of the trcuble. He hid devoted his whole
tlmu to the consideration of the subject for
weeks and has had Interviews' with thou
sands of his fellow citizens und his act lust
night , he has no reason to doubt , ' represents
the opinion of a majority of the people of
Coumcll Bluffs.
There was an almost absolute silence
around the building when the major stiode
through the ciowd and entered the prlvito
portion of the city cleik'n olllce. He took .1
scat and remained silent and motionless for
ten minutes , and at no time was there moro
th'i'i a buzz of whispered conversation In the
ciowd that filled the loom and the hall Slid
dcnly rising , the mayor pulled the two docu
ments from the inside pocket of his to3t ,
and tinning to the crowd , said
"Gentlemen , I want to confers that I have
been In many positions of trial in my life
where the exigencies of the circumstances
tested my Judgment to the fullest. I have
been on the battlelleld In the face of dangci ,
hut at no time In my life have 1 been called
upon to face cuch an extraordinary condition
as this. I have felt that I should let this
matter go to the people , and 1 have felt this
since I came into this loom tonight. I only
want to do what Is right and what Is for
the best Interests of myself and my fellow
citizens. All that I have on eaith Is here.
My wife and my family are here. My chil

able to live and dlo here. I have made up
my mindl that I will not put a thing In the
way of the wheels of piogret s of this city ,
and that I will sign both of these ordi

The Instant ho ceased speaking he
a pen from the clerk's de k and wrote his
name on each ordinance with a rapid and
firm hand. But befoie the pen had totichec :
the paper there went up a shout that fairly
shook the building. Before the writing was
finished scores of hands weie extended across
the oaken counter trying to grasp the hand
that held the pen. The shouting continued
for scvcial minutes and when It died away
seme ono proposed ' 'three cheers for George

was approved by those whojfiad witnessed It

regularity of the nomination of Hartshorn ,
the Wright county candidate , and the Hnn-
cocK county people at once filed a pioteat
against allowing him on the ballot. Mem
bers of the board say lu all probablilty
the same reasons that moved them to deny
Chambers a place on the ticket will compel
them to likewise exclude Hartshorn , .which
will leave- the dltitrlct without a republican
nominee for representative. . Monday Is the
last day on which nominations can be legally
filed ami both counties are getting icady
to file nominations by petition on that daj' .
This will give the republic-iris two candidates
for lepiesentatlve unless a compiomlse Is
made.
