THE OMAHA DAILY 111313 SEPTEMBER JG , 1807. 11 CONDITION OF OMAHA'S THADh Country Bnyers Prcatly in Eriilenca in the Jobbing District. BANK CLEARANCES SHOW A HEAVY GAIN .ilrirMi Mi-it lllKlily 1'lrnxcil ivltb ( InHi'Milli of SlutiI'll I \Vi-cU South Oiiitilia Miikm a i IIlK Itvcord , All the rcnulnr avenue ? ! of trade were practically forsaken the past week nnd the whole huplnefiH community was ocru- tiled with the Sin to fair nnd the business Incident to the ocx-aclon. Knowing the' great success of the fair nnd other f''f - tlvltles It will hardly be necessary lo point out that thU bus been one of the best weeks In the history of the jobbing trade of this city. Theie has never been a tlmo , not even during the old boom days , when fie many country merchants have visited the city during one week or when they bought in the aggregate ns much mer chandise , Every Jobber In the city has had bin hands full and hoti.se salesmen nnd traveling men have been worked almost to death showing and selling goods and entertaining customer ? , and It Is xnfu to nay that there In more than one business man and clerk In the city who Is glad that fair week only comes once a year. While the total of all the orders placed has been very law , It Is a noteworthy fact that merchants mill buy con- Hurvutlvoly , though with rmu'h greater fro dom than was the case n few months "IP. it was Impossible for any one to meet runny ounlry buyers nnd listen to their descriptions of the greatly Improved con dition In the various localities without be coming in some degree enthused with the ( spirit of oonlldenec which they all soumcd to breathe. It would be hatd work to Imagine n moru hopeful lot of men than the country merchant1 who ) have been spending n few day * In Omnha the past Wi-ck , and , Judging from their description * ol' the farm crops , their hopes are wi-11 founded. It will tnko a day or two to get slocks rcai ranged and then business will nettle down to Us regular course. OLKAKING UOUSK RECOUP. The dealing house record for thu tinst week WOK very gratifying to tlioci' Ini'l- liess men whu are f'speclaly luterosled In the growth and prmiperlty of the cltv The- total clearings for the week were $ .i,107.ii5. ; : which WIIH mori ! than double the clearings of Denver nnd more- than four times us Ini'KC ua tin' clfarlng.t for St. Jn t > ph , pliu- Ing this cltv llflpfiuh in the list of eighty- four clearing house cities * and ahead of Ktich large' commercial centers nt ) Milwau kee. Buffalo. Detroit , St. Paul , Indianapolis and I't-ovMi'iiiT. Omaha business me-n UFcd to think In the days when Omaha wan at the height of lln prosperity that a weekly report showing clearings averag ing Sl.lKW.M.'O a day was most encouraging and It wlil be noted that Inat week's figures did not full very much short of that murk. If business has been active at Onmlia it has been more than active at South Omaha- bus been overwhelming. It seemed ns If t-very man who came In from tin.- country to the State fair felt called upon to bring along with him all the rattle and hogs that he could gather up. The result was that the yards were full to overllowlng from Monday until Friday , when they began to thin out. The country visitors , however , did their part well , foi they took back with them , In the shape of feeders , almost ns many < -nttle as they brought In , thus making It possible to keep the yards cleared up in spite of the fxcesslvu rccelptn. On one tlnv , Monday , the receipts were the largest in the his tory of the yards and the total shipments of feeders to the country were the largest for any ono week , so that two records were smashed during the period under re- vl > w. The receipt * of cattle , bogs and BbeCn footed up 3,700 cars for the week , which would make 'i single tnfln of stock cara twelve miles long. This twelve-mile train delivered Into the yards n total of 7."i.O < X Jiead of live stock of all kinds. Some Idea of what that means may be gained from the fact that the stock received and soh ! nt the yards during the week , on a very conservative eftimatp , brought Jl.293,000. A large jiroportlcm of this money went out Into tne range country , but Nebraska farmers cameIn for a considerable share and It Is only reasonable to assume that the large sums of money thus released und Bout out Into the country must have a very noticeable ' . 'ffect upon .trade In general , F.t.Ul WIOHIC TltADK VHHY OOO11. Onmliii MrrrlinntN Do 1111 I'liiiNiinl V < lllllll < . Of HllKlllCHIH. "W. II. Robot-son , local manager of R. G. nun & Co ' Mercantile agency , speaking of trade for the week , says : "It Is not to be expected that a festal period such as has Just passed would ordinarily be productive of business. The fact is , however , that merchants and others arc so eager to re plenish their stocks that sales were vcrj large ut the jobbing houses for the week nnd the business at the stock yards was exceptionally heavy. It Is statc-d on good authority that more farmers were In South Omaha looking for feeders during the week than at any time In the history of the yardH. "The week's festivities were n credit to the olty and a delight to our visitors The pageant of Thursday night would be commended generally If placed upon the Htrcets of any city In the union , The floats were striking , both In their beauty am their originality , und no Omaha man neei ItPBltnta to claim for Thursday night the llrst place lu the annals of Amerlcar pageantry. The Interest which King Ak- Har-IlHii has aroused lu his kingdom was demonstrated by the enormous crowd gath ered upon the streets to witness bin triumphal display. It Is no exaggeration to say that 2.V,000 ) people witnessed th * liarude. The exposition managers shouli Lo en 'ouraged by the Interest manifest during the week. If the comparatively un important events of 1S97 can nttrae't so many thcusnnd.s It Is not too sanguine to liope to see hundreds of thousands at tne TransmlrflHxi | > pl Expos It Ion. "If the State Hoard of Agriculture baa lii'i'ii at nil judicious In It.s expenditures there should be a healthy bnlanco in the treiisury u n result of the large nttend- unco of the week. Another year some necessary expenditures can bo made lookIng - Ing to the comfortH of the people on the ground * . 'Turning to the trade , it Is griitlfylnj , to hear reports from all the houses' of i very large Increase In the volume of sales Ouu uf the largest shoe houses here In formed me that the month ending Hep tember IS showed an Increase of 2.V ) per cent over sales for the name period las year. Id. day nnd Ihe Itndlng was largely In the bands of the reactionists. They \\erfe persistent In seeking for the weak spots In tins market , tryIng - Ing to uncover stup loss orders. I This they suc ceeded In Joins In " . number' flocks and accelerated the iiecllne. There were u few feeble rallies during the day , but Ihe sagging tendency was for the most part uninterrupted. Dealings were not on n lame scale , nor were they as widely distributed as of late. Many stocks showed no movement nt all during the day. The rise nt the opening In sympathy with Lon don served to restrict the. net declines In the Inteinntlonal stocks , and Ixindon also was n biljor of some stocks during the day. There \as nothing In the general news to cause n re cession In prices hnd , the heaviness of the mar ket has no other explanation than the with drawal of support nnd the continuance of some offerings lo realize profits. The bears did some short selling In their efforts to uncover stop loss orders , but there wns no aggressive general selling manifest nnd much caution wns ap parent In putting out short sales. Trading halte-d after 11 o'clock nnd watted for the bank stntcmcnt. The response was not Imminent when the statement nppeared , shoeing some hesdlnncy nbout construlnn Its character. An unfavorable view was finally adopted and prices drifted downward again , closing In many cases nt the lowest of the day. In some stocks , how ever , there was a llnal rally of n fraction , bilgar covered n rung ? of over 2 points , but closed un changed. Omaha lost 2 points. Consolidated Gas 2'i nnd many other active shares from 1 to 2 points. Interest today centered in the weekly statement ot the clearing bouse banks. The condition of the money market after the week s development was looked upon ns the sal ent factor In determining the course of speculation In the Immediate future- The most notable feature of the statement Is the decrease shown In deposits of $10C02.r.OO. The actual loss In cash was JC.MS.SOO. nil In legal tenders , ns the nmount of specie shows a small net Increase. The heavy decrease In deposits probably lepre- scnts the demand from Interior banks , which have had funds on deposit In New York banks of the withdrawals for many months. The proportions drawals account for the sudden calling In of loans during the week , which was ntti buted In speculative circles to n combined effort to ma nipulate the money market. The contraction In loans Is stated nt 2,7S.3HO and this contrac- tlon served to teduce by so much the loss to the banks In actual change to save n corresponding nddltlonnl decrease In the surplus reserve. That the decrease In the surplus reserve Is not ns large as expected was due to the fnt thnt [ he local reserve Is brought down J2C.i1.r,23 by the enormous withdrawal of deposits. The contrac tion of loans In face of , the active speculative demand pievalent amply accounts for the stif fening of money rates and for the fulling off In speculate activity on the Stock exchange. It demonstrates that the sudlen r-e | In money rates on Monday wns not a manipulative move ment In the bear Interest , but was a natural re- llectlon of actual conditions. It points to n Hicedy further full In exchange nnd to large ad ditional Imports of gold , unless the money rate In London nnd Paris rises to a point where It would be more profitable for creditors here to leave their funds there. It explains nlfo the action of two of the city hanks , not usually dealers In exchange. In engaging gold for Im port esrly In the week In face of the almost unanimous opinion of the foreign exihnnise bankers thnt the operation would yield no prullt. The first engagement of gold was made by the largest of the city banks nnd probably wns on Us knowledge of the conditions operat ing on the money supply. The calling and consequent shifting of loans nt the higher rate of Interest has been the pre dominant Influence In the stock market , which has been reactionary all wtek with the exception of one day. The reaction < developed late on Monday colncldcntally with the rlre In the money rate nnd after stocks bail touched the highest price of the year earlier , ln theday. . The re- pnrts of the nature of the" representations made to Spain on behalf of thi > United Slates In re gard to Cuba by General Wooilfonl , the United States minister , ga\e n keen Instrument to the reactionists and they used It with the spread of yellow fever to ndvanfnpe on Tuesday. On that day liquidation resulted In snlcs of nenily a million shares of stocks. The only recovery was that of Wednesday on the news of the be ginning of the sold Import movement There Is a feeling thnt the reaction Is a healthy one1 and war. In fact overdue It has served to shake out any weakly margined holders of stocks nnd 1ms left them In possession of holders less likely to sv.cc'jmb to n casual reaction. It Is said that the advance In price had rather morn than discounted the Improvement In huslnrs.s and the Increase In the earnings of the railroads , a notable evidence 01 wnicn wan iiinirtieu uy iw Increase during the week of the Itock Island dividend from a. 2 to 4 per cent basis. There fore , with all the news continuing to relied Im provement of business , all the elements In Wall street have practically acquiesced In the reac tion nnd have 'Interposed nYV strenuous resistance to It. The declines range'all the way from 3 to 8 points In the most active stocks and Consoli dated Gas Iw * declined 1IVt per cent. The railroad bond market has been lesn active , and only the speculative Issues showed any marked sympathy with the decline In stocks. The Evening I'ost's financial cablegram says : "The stock markets were quiet nnd featureless today , pending the settlement next week. There was a firm undertone , however. The larger ! run , however , was the signal for another drop tn values. The chief feature of weakness was the lower close of the provision mnikct yesterday , which was added to by tin ] fact that today's iv-celpts of hogs ut moht all markets ran ahead of ox- pectutlons. Thi. Jesuit WIIB that the hog mar ket at this point opened a string 5o lower and closed In about thn same condition. The most of the hogs here were heavy ami they sold all the way from J3.70 to J3.50 , but mostly at J3.M. The market was fairly active at the decline and everything was sold und weighed up In good season. The lust week has I > CPII especially noteworthy by reason of the violent Iluctuatlons of the hog market. The wpi'k opened with an advance , but on Tuesday the market declined 2fee , on Wednes day 15c , and on Thursday inc. Thursday proved to be the low day of the week , the average of the sales OH that day being 27o lower than on Monday.
