there would be very little go In a hopping

AUTUMN COSTUME WITH BLOUSE COAT FROA1 HAMPER'S HAZAK
Many of the now costumes this autumn are noticeable for the richness of ma
terials and trimmings. One particularly smart gown from Harper's Bazar , shown on
this page , Ins the skirl ot brack arnnire , made very full and with godets. The jacket
blouse is a moat elaborate affalrV made of green velvet cut with tabs. iA large plastron
of broadtail fur covers the front and the back , and forms epaulettes over the sleeves ;
this plastron Is embroidered In'Jot ' anil green and silver pessementerie. Three brando-
bourgs of assorted sizes finished with olives have the effect of loops on the front of
the waist. A collar slashed to match the waist Is lined with ermine. Tlio belt is of
black Suede , fastened with'a'steel ' or old-silver buckle. Tlio small sleeves are trimmed
at the wrist with the saih embroidery as that on tlio plastron , and are slashed to
show a pleated rulflo around the hand.
A green felt hat of the Vlgee Lebrnn shape Is worn with this gown. It Is
trimmed with lack feathers , a stiff ruche of pleated velvet around thu crown , and
at the side large white roses form a cache-peigne.
to accept the situation in good faith and take
his chances on the form.
The waltz has withstood these assaults
before. For a century or more It has been
the object of censorious criticism fiom
those wallflowers who neglected to learn it
in their younger days and are reluctant to
tackle it so late in life. Hut the waltz , like
the young man who participates in it. has
held its own , and we believe it will continue
to hold Its own In spite ot the Udlct promul
gated by the association of dancing mas
ters.
It is doubtless true that the wall/ , like
September wheat , has shown a strong Jump
ing tendency of late. " But it must be re
membered that a wave of prosperity is upon
us and that everything is on the jump. A
waltz that la full of Jumps Is much more
typical of modern American life than tlio
tame and dreamy glide that If , devoid of
hustle and brings neither cxhauatljii nor
perspiration.
Mrs. Clem 13. Lincoln of Plattsburg claims
tn bo the champion bread baker of Missouri ,
and she has enough blue ribbons , medals
and other trophies to make her claim to
that honorable distinction a very strong one.
It Is a matter of serious doubt If any oilier
woman in the state can show half as many
trophies for excellency In the same lino.
Mrs. Lincoln la the wife of. a well-to-do
farmer who lived for many years In Clay
county. She was raised thcro and U-arni'd
how to bake bread from her.piolher. When
she was married to Mr. 'Lincoln , about sixteen -
teen years ago , they nllwed to Clinton
county and lived many years iiear Lalhrop ,
Now they own and llvo on a"beatitlftil farm
near I'lattsburg. ,
Mrs. Lincoln made her -first showing of
fine bread years ago at the county fair at
Liberty. There are other people In Clay
county who know how to bake bread , and
alio had lively competition , but for several
yearH slio won regularly. Then she fthnwoil
bread at the expositions held in St. .Joseph
and Kansas City , and won first prize every
time hhc exhibited bread at Kansas City
and never missed but nncn at SI. Joseph ,
Her supply of blue ribbons Is something In
which Bho takes great pride and the people
who have had the privilege of eating the
bread she bakes claim It Is Jual an good aa
it looks. She sent some bread to the St.
Louis exposition twice , and , wlillo aim w < ii
not present , she won the blue ribbon each
I line and received a letter of commendation
from the management. Ia t week she
won the first honor at the , , falr held pt St.
Joseph , and she baa never failed lo win
the ribbon or the purse thai was offered.
With all of her honors she Is one of the
most modest of women , and her popularity ,
while very gratifying to her , In a HubJe/U to
which she seldom refers. She has three
little girls who are learning how to bake
bread , and she expects to have them prize |
winners like huraelf when they enter the ! ;

An ingenious Now York woman , Ilarrietti ) I

permanently to the backs of all theater

the hut wearer to adjust her hat with ease

fair hands. All these dainties and more ol
the same kind tastefully arranged amid flow
ers and fruit and silver candelabra on the
po'llslied ' mahogany which reflected In Its mys
terious depths the candles and their myriad
radiations , with the milder islieer of the
highly polished silver nothing could bo pret
tier and more restful than the tea tablc.s

was as different as possible from what Is
