provisions dpcllned Mt7V4c.
Wheat nl thu linmelltita opening was easy.
Curb prices wcro Inclined to weakness on
account or a rather shiirp decline nt 1'urls ,
Imt tlio higher quotations from Liverpool
canned the markel lo turn strong at once.
Dei-ember , which closed yesterday nt l)2c ) ,
opt-ncd loilay nt from V2\bc \ lo 92'Ac. Shorts
Blurted for cover , but ran up against a snag
In Iho shape of scarcity of offerings , the
lirlco being hoisted to 93'c ' { , before any wheat
of consequence cnmo on the market. The
northwest receipts were ngnln heavy und
that caused holders to exercise caution , so
-that when the prlco had risen to OSVfcc plenty
tit wheat showing a prollt wns unloaded.
Thu nce.lpt ut Minneapolis and Uuluth woto
133 cars , compurml wlh 'Ml a week ago and
WVJ thn corresponding day of the your before.
.There cities , however , nro still paying from
2c to 2V4c prt'inlum for Immediate delivery.
Chicago receipts wcro 23U cars , only 33 of
which were contract. The quantity Insiiectcil
out of store was Itt.lS.'J bu. The previously
exploded rumor that llussla Intended pro
hibiting the export era heat was revived
ngnln abotf. thu time closing Paris cables
wcro received , showing a complete recovery
from the early decline. This sent December
plywnrd again , the price climbing with
Inn illy a halt to83yic. . At that price a big
trade was done , large quantities of wheat
being tlumprtl on the market. The offerings
were readily absorbed for a time , but In
the end the weight proved greater than the
"market " could bear , the maiket becoming
quite weak when explicit denials of the Ilus.
Ulan reports were received. A notable fea
ture during the advance was the refusal of
May to respond except In nn extremely un-
iw tiling and backward fashion. When December -
comber was readily bringing Wte. 'he ' Jl-iy
delivery barely touched SHie , and a house
with close Liverpool connections said It had
liberal selling orders from the latter place
for May delivery. Kxport clearances of
wheat and flour from Atlantic ports wen-
equal to 440.0m ) bu. The receipts for the day
ut the four principal outside winter wheat
markets Kansas City. St. Louis , Toledo and
3 : > etrolt were only 182,00) bu. out of the total
primary market receipts , which amounted
to l.ZTfi.OOO bu. The latest trading In Decem
ber was at 82'iii92.c. (
There was a smaller business In corn. The
Tnnrket averaged firm all forenoon , starting
} ; , o higher on light receipts and the s'eid-
iness of Liverpool cables und enjoying good
support as long as wheat kept strong. To
ward the end , however , when wheat com
menced to slip , corn followed very willingly.
HorolptH were 4Sr cars. Atlantic exports
were : ! iiiU : : bu. There were claims of accu
mulation of stocks at eastern points. The
f < hl | ltig demand was slow. December
ranged from Hl sc to 30c , closing iSVic
lower nt SOWiHOTic.
Oats WIIB steady up to the last hour of
trading. Then that matket struck a slip
pery place , too , and dropped with the rest
of the markets. There was nn excellent
whipping demand , -which was mainly rcspon-
slhlo- for the buoyancy displayed. Sympathy
with whc.it- and corn caused the decline. He-
< -elpts were "M cars , charters were for OtiOOO
bu December ranged between 211sB20' > ic ,
closing about MiC lower at Ziv c.
The Incubus of the yellow fever epidemic
weighed down tlje provision market. Prices
started weak on that account and through
symilthy | ! with a weak hog market , and the
anarket ruled heavy all day. Cash trade was
only moderate. Thi-ro was very little out-
sldo trading. A moderate line of long 'pork '
was liquidated. At the close .Inly pork was
IV-c lower at JS.M . . December larJ 3o lower

NBW YOHK. Sept. 23. Tim 'recovery In prices
which began yestcrdny ns continued today dur-
Inif the earlier part of the session of the Stock
exchange and the advance of prices of all stock
wn * apparently In full force again until the
afternoon , when the support seemed to be with
drawn from the market nnd prices fell nwnyto
a general level below last night's close. The
rise wn stlmulnted by the nnnouncement that
the bnnkii had engaged 11,000,001) In gold from
France for Import to this counlry , making a
total with yesterday's engagement of 12.3CO.O-O In
gild due to nrrlve. llecelpts of pdd reported
from San Francisco ns nrrlvlng there from
Australia helped the recovery. The notion of the
Hank of England In ndvanclng Its rnte of dis
count ' 4 to 21i per cent WHS anticipated In view
of the continued depletion of Its gold holdings
nnd the additional strain of yesterday's with.
drnwal for shipment to this country , tester-
day's rise In puce had ntlmulnlnl tlu < placing of
some oulsldo orders with commlrnlon hotite * nnd
thi-lr execution wns the sustaining factor dm Ing
the morning. The strength ot' Stmiir , which n > e
nearly 4 points on the reported Intention of the
Treasury department to apply the ciuntervnlllng
duty on Dutch refined suguis , helped along the
rise. There was support nffordf-d the market all
through by heavy buying of some of the bull
operators who have been conrplcuoun In the re
cent rife. The effect of the gold Import move-
nient was largely dissipated during flic day by n
skepticism ns to Its natural character. The ex
change bankers whs usually handle the move
ment of gold , botU Import nnd export , were
unanimous In the i pinion thnt nt the ruling rnle
of sterling exchange nnd continental exchange
here nnd uf gold In Isimlan nnd .Paris there was
no pn/tlt In tbe Importntlon ot guld and the
llgures of most of them would Indicate quite n
heavy low on the operntlons. Much curiosity
was expressed ns to thn Identity of the clients
for whom the banks nrc making thu
Importation nnd the opinion was quite freely ex
pressed thnt the operation wns designed entirely
to Inllueuce the operation of the stocks. The
failure of the exchange market t harden under
the announcement wns quite noticeable. So with
the cnll rntes for money , which became pretty
well established nt 3 per cent. AH tbe condition-
became more clearly defined , the upward move
ment of prlcm became checked , and there won n
period of dullness , followed by a steady decline
to the cliwe , the upward course of the morning
being almost exactly retraced the afternoon.

were retnlncd. except Hocking Vnll'y. Delaware

that further engusem ° nts of gold for Import bad
been made , but exercised no Inllueuce In the
market.

Tbe Kvenlng 1'ost's London financial cablegram
jays : "Tho change In the discount rate of tbe
Hank ort England announced today had no effect
on the stock markets , having been fully antici
pated. Indeed , It Is believed , that the rate would
have been rntsed to a per cent , but for the fact
that the treasury bills , amoutitlni ; ti > 2 MMm

market today was the steady rally 111 Americans.
Trices cloned nt the best , t'nlon PaclHe nnd

better. Opinions art to the date of the next
shipment of gold to New Yoik differ widely.
Kveryone Is Baying that the movement Is ciitlrelj
exceptional , nnd will probably not be repented ,
but tne shrewd ones prefer to hold their opinions
In Fuppense ptndlng the course of the New YorK

the week show the receipt of 130.000 to the con

stopiicd them and demanded thulr buslncsj.
They also searched them and brought to
light four dlco In thu pocket of one. Thn
men wore promptly arrested on the charge
of being vagrants and suspicious characters.
When the prisoners were arraigned In
pollfo court yesterday the police ofllcers
testified that the strong point against thorn
was the fact that they had gambling In
struments In their possession. It was btatecl
that the chances were favorable that the
young fellows had como hero to Involgla
some of thu rural visitors Into a game of.
"craps" with Iho Intention of fleecing them
of their money.
Police Judge Gordon questioned them.
The prisoners stated that they had remote
to the tlty to take In the State fair. They >
said they worked In storcn In Hamburg.
"Havo you any money ? ' asked I'ollco
Judge Gorton.
"No , " was Iho answer.
"Did you como to the city without any

The police ofllcers who heard the testi
mony laughed and considered It a lingo joko.
J'ollfci Judge Gordon took a more than
humorous view of the case. Ho considered
apparently that under the circumstances ha
could not well convict iho prlsirers of having
gambling tools In their po-scsslon. when they
themselves had bceiv rohbrd by gambling In.
