The Kcncrnt Undo situation nt Omnha Is
most satisfactory from every point of view.
The i ruoi'M of recovery from the depressIng -
Ing Inllticncei that Imvc held trade at In a
vloc fet throe yenrH or more , han been fur
more rapid Ihnn the most hopeful had an-
tlolpaUd , There was every reason for ex
pecting that the recovery of business nctlv-
Ity would bo gradual and that It would bo
drawn out { hrpugh many months Instead ,
there has been n Brent awakening nil along
tlio line and In many deptrtmontH of trade
lliu change cime 60 suddenly that It wan
hard to rcatlzo that thu Improvement hud
como to Htny and tlmt U was not merely a
tspasmodlo accident.
With tlio jobbing houses the Inst week
there wns n very good volume of trade In
motion , and IIH UHuul of late , the packing
rooms were crowding the shipping depart
ment to the cxtunl of lt cnpiclty , as the
outturn of ull thu houses was on n very
liberal scale. IJuyers were very iilcntlful ,
the number of country merchants In the city
being large , nnd In addition traveling men
on Inn ruud were able to give good accounts
of themselves.
The feeling among attendant buyers w.is
nppinntly end of great conlUlenco IIH to the
future course of business and , although
the experience of the three years past lias
taught them to be cautious * , It Was notc.nhlo !
tlmt they bought with much Broiler free
dom than for u long time pail. Taken as n
whole It hns been nbout the most satlsfac-
tory week experienced In the Jobbing trnilo
lu a long time.

A feature of no little Importance , and one
thin itt noted In cvcrgieaiiT degree further
cast , Is the Increased demand for Hiich goods
us uro consumed almost entirely by the Inb-
oriliw people The poorer clunks have been
utmblo to buy for a long time , but they
aru buying now , and with considerable free
dom. Goods that have been utmost a dead
letter In the market for u long time past ,
bucnliHei those who would buy them dlil not
have the means , are moving once more
That these lines are Helling Is regarded as nn
excellent sign and means ns much or more
than the movement of higher ptlccd lines ,
ami th.it they nre selling for present con-
mimpllon Is the most encouraging sign of
all. It means tlmt the country Is more
prosperous ; Unit the working classes are
lliidlng employment nnd .in > able once more
to gratify their wants.
Tne local mnnutucturers are experiencing
the Fame Improvement In business as the
Jobbers and tlie small factories , ns well ns
the mote pretentious one , me gradually
Increasing the number of people on their
pay rolls IIH the dcm mil for the product
exceeds their present output.
The letall trade of the city , though the
last to vtiow Imptovcment , U piotjresslns ?
In the right direction. Tne weather has
been ton warm to bring out any marked
buyl ig for full or winter clothing and no
great activity Is to be expected In that
direction until the season Is farther ad
vanced However , It Is the exception to
llnd u merchant who will not admit tlmt he
Is doing more than n jeir ago. In home
lines , ns , for example , notice furnishing
goods , carpets , draperies furniture , etc. ,
them bus been a very heavv Increase in
eoinpared with u year nio. The boot mil
nhoe people nte nl o able to report huge
gains Taken all In nil the situation ns
regards the retail trade or the city Is
steadily Improving , with thu pro-peels en
couraging lot the fiituie
The cleailiiK house ru-rul for the week
shows that there Is a -al foundation for
Ihe reported Improvement In business. Dur
ing the week Just closed the gain nt this
point was 71 per cent over last jcar' record
for the same week , no other large city ex
cepting only Indianapolis coming anywhere
near tlmt figure. The percentage of gain
for1 the whole countiy was only -13 per cent
nnd outside ot New Vork City IS per cent.
The gain In clearings carries Omnhn ahead
of such cities ns Milwaukee , lltifTnlo and
St. Paul , nnd places It In a position where
thole nro only three or four Inland cities ,
without water communication , having us
huge clpnrlnpa The record of the week In
this respect Is most encouraging nnd In
dicates more clearly than anything' else the
commercial Importance tills city.

"No better evidence of the complete res
toration of confidence In the future of
Omnhn has come to my knowledge thnn the
recent sile of 4 < 4 per cent rlty bonds nt n
premium of 1.1,0'S. In the first place It Is
gratifying to know that Investors would bid
upon bonds it so low a rate of Interest , and
to llnd them eagerly sought , not only by
home capitalists , but thuu abroid , Is n
Rtgnlflcant circumstance , especially In view
of the fact that less than a year ago an
Issue vvns offered without Inkers
"In n conversation recently enjoyed "with
a lending horseman I vvns surprised to
lenrn that Nebraska has produced the best
blooded animals of recent years , even rival
ing the celebrated studs of Cjl'fornli. My
Informant has fifteen fine horses on his
ranch In Nance county , ana tin tells mo that
he can raise thn very best stock to 3 yeirs
of ago it Ihe remarkably low figure of * 2"i
per head. Ho has never sold a colt for less
than JlOO , and many of his animals have
brought a very much higher llguro , and all
of his stock Is Nebraska bred and born
The merit of these animals Is recognized
In foreign lands , and In fact the American
horse Is making his wav into the cavalry
nnd prlvato service of the crowned heads
of Kurope The present year 15,000 horses
hnve been exported to Kurope , and even
the western broncho Is receiving attention
on account of his endurance and strength
for the lighter duties of military service.
These conditions warrant the belief that
thcro Is much hrpe for the American horse ,
nnd will probably stimulate this Industry.
"Tho work of the Knights of Ak-Sar-Hon
Is not ns fully appreciated as It should be.
This order Is not simply nil association for
the purpose of Jollification and festivity ,
though its annual parades and public en
tertainments are suillclcnt to commend It to
the people of the city , and If It had no oUicr
purpose , Ihn order phould enroll every
public-spirited citizen ot Omaha In Its mem
bership. It Is , however , a most effective
Instrumentality tn the development of trade.
The Initiation of hundreds of citizens of the
cities and towns of Nebraska during th
present season has accomplished more to
ward removing thn Inexcusable prejudice
which political conditions have aroused
ngalnst Omaha than -)0,000 ) public speeches ,
or a million ddcuments could liave accom

to our Jobbers nnd manufacturers counts
up very fast In dollars nnd cents. Kor In

ferent localities of the state , has Invarl ibly
passed Omaha by In making his purchases
until this season. He was Induced to pir-
tlelpatc In one of the Ak-S.tr-Uen excur

make a trial of this market. Before bo left
tlicfclty he g.ivo one order to a lnglo house
for J4.000 worth ot goods. What his aggre
gate purchases amounted to I have not
learned , but venture the assertion that his
visit left orders reaching c'.ose to $10OCO
lth local firms.
"The Improved condlllons during the wctk

"At South Omnhn trade continues un

"Tho announcement of the completion of

wav to Its gulf terminus at Port Arthur I"
a fact worth noting ns wo pasj , for the
reason that this line will soon become one
of the principal north and south arterle"
of commerce , and Omaha will be Its natural
northern terminus.
"Although the past two weeks have been

nnd a decllnn of from % d to Id at Liver
