With tlirce big paving contracts and c ,
number of smaller ones to bo coinpleted tliia
fall , In addition to a number of s-vver con
tracts , there will bo moic oppoiunity ( tor
employment In public works during tlie next
three months than has been offered In
Omaha for several years. In order to com
plete these contracts It will lie necessary
for the contractors to employ as many men
as can bo used to advantage and altogether
tliu operations will afford temporary employ
ment to nearly as many men as would bo
required to run a big packing house. The
contracts that are to be completed this fall
Involve nearly 100,000 yards of paving , ex
clusive of guttering , curbing , paving be
tween street railway tinckH and extras. The
ntlro cost of the Improvements will ap
proximate $200,000.
Monday morning tlio Omaha Stre'ct Hall
way company will set a big gang of men nt
work on West Farnnm street. The north
track will ho reconstructed flrst , so that
that side ot the stieet can be paved and
then trafllc will be thrown to that side
of the street while the south side Is being
paved. The Grant Paving company Is ready
to begin paving as soon as the stro ° t rail
way company has made a start on recon
structing the tracks. It will put a force ot
men at work resetting the curb Monday
morning. Inside of a week the rcpavlng
will probably he In full operation.
An effort will also be made to secure a
majority petition for rcpavlng the remaining
four blocks 01 Karnnm htrect and carry
out the preliminary legislation In order that
the-se blocks may he finished vvllh the re
mainder of the street. The present contract
provides for repaying the street ns far west
as rhlrtyalxtli street , but po far the petition
for paving from Thirty-sixth to Fortieth
street has not secured the required signa
tures.
The Center street paving will begin aa
soon as Contractor Murphy puts In a few
bloclis of curbing. This has been delayed
by n , controvcroy over the bond , but this
has now been adjusted and nctlvo work on
the ptrect will begin at once. There are
17,265 yarels of macadam to be laid on Cen
ter fctreet. In addition to 2,100 yards of brick
guttering ami the curbing.
.The Omaha Building and Construction
company will soon begin paving Davenport
street , from Thirty-eighth avenue to Thirty-
ninth street , with vitrified brick. This job
Includes 924 yaids of paving.
Tlio Tvvcnly-rmii , Klghttenth and Seven
teenth sticet Jobs , on which the material
lint not yet been designated , contemplate
about 12.000 yards of p.ivlug.
The time In which the property owners
on South Sixteenth street may designate
material does not expire- until September
20 , but there IP no question but that asphalt
will be designated a.id the contract will be >
Immediately awarded to Hugh Murphy at
$1.2.i a yard. 1ly rushing the flnal ordinance
through the council it Is expected that work
can ho begun on tills street betoto October
1 and fii'ishcd this full.

More Inquiries have been received than ever
before , anil there U every indication that
the competition for the bonds will be cxrrp-

purchase Omaha bonds before , have Minified
