CiluiHt iif 'Miirili-i-i-il ' ' - a - AInii 1'cn-llli-s a I'urty nt SiurtNiiiin | , Four Grand Haven ( Mich. ) citizens had an experience the other night which they will remember to the end of their days , aayn the Tribune. It deals with the super natural , and is ono o ! the trnnicst stories ever heard In theseparts. . Messrs. 13. A. Lane , 1) . Wright , Jed Darns and Fred Darns left for a. fishlns expedition up at the big boom. They made/ arrangement ! ! with a farmer named Dramlal , living on the river road about a mile from the Xortonville mill , to sleep In a hut on his laud. This hut is about a quarter of a rnlle from Dramlal's housa , on the margin of a thick woods. The quartet of fishermen made prep arations for spending the night In the cabin , and at 11 o'clock retired. About 11:30 : Mr. Lane , who was Bleeping lightly , heard a noise an of some one walking In the garret above. Lane nudged Wright anil very soon all four were sitting up and listening In I tently. | The noise was very light at first , M If occasioned by rats walking over the garret floor. It gradually became louder and very coon the whole cabin shook and the noise became a din. Naturally the four poor fel lows were badly frightened. Anybody would have been under the circumstances. Oao of the quartet tried to open , the door , but , strangely enough , It refused to open. This so frightened one of the others that ho Jumped through the open window , over which a white cloth had been spread. Ie- splto the fact that the cloth was only pinned to the window sill , the pins did not tear out. Getting outside , the fellow who did the Jumping act eoon pushed the door In , greatly to the relief of hlfi coinradra. Dy this time the members of the party began to muster up a little courage. Wrlglit allied by the others pulled himself through the hole leading Into the garret and lit a match. IIo could see nothing , and the mys terious noises ceased for the time being. Then the other members of the party looked into the garret with the same result. The garret waq a small affair , hardly capable of a man standing erect In , and It was vir tually empty. For a time the llttlo hut shook as If In a violent windstorm. All out side was quiet and the harvest moon was shining In all Its splendor. No one was in sight around the cabin. The noises con tinued until 12:30 : sometimes lightly , and then again very loud as if live or nix men were Jumping about on the garret floor. The experience was too much for the four Grand Havenltra and they gathered their effects and slept In the field the balance of the night. In the morning thorough search was inaila of thecabin. . Nothing was found thnt could have produced a noise. Mr. Brandal was called and ho laughingly tohl them that ho forgot to tell them the night before that the place was haunted. The story ho told of the cabin In the woods lends ad ditional mystery. In this cabin some sixteen or seventeen years ago lived an olil hermit. Ho was a strange old character and very llttlo wan known of him except that ho was reputed to have a vast amount of gold stored in the cabin somewhere. The old fellow never went among the neighbors , but gained his liveli hood in gathering and shipping frogs to tlie fn.stern hotels. Ono August morning sixteen years ago the neighbors found him lying dead on the floor of the little hut with a bullet wound In his side. The mystery sur rounding his tragic ending Is , and undoubt edly always will be , a mystery. It la sur mised that ho was killed by robbers looking for his reputed fortune. Shortly after the tragedy strange noises were heard and strange sights seen around the cabin. Sir. Ilrandal has often seen lights In the cabin In the dead of the night , and yeans ago a shadowy figure was seen hovering about. Of late only noises have been heard anil particularly at this eeacon of the year. It was when the harvest moon was shining sixteen years ago that the old frog hunter was murdered and every year , particularly at that season , the noises are very distinct. The neighbors , and Mr. Drandal hlms-cK , are used to the phenomena , but seldom go near the cabin after nightfall. Everybody In that section avers that the old frog hunter's spirit loltors there between the hours of 11 and 12:30 : every night. Of the quartet who patted the night In the cabin nothing further need be said , except that Lane and Wrlglit have been iplcklng gray l-.olm out of their headi ever ulnco and the others admit that It wa the most horrible night they ever experienced. Lane's watch , which hadn't been wound In twenty-four hours , was wound during the midnight seance by some supernatural hands. Wheelmen attending state meet at Atb- land September 6 can secure round trip tickets for 75 cents of the 1" BITS OF FEMININFCOSSIP. " * A man's society welcomes nil respectable nnd decent workers ; n woman's organization stopa to nsk who wns the father or who Is the husband of a proposed helper , what church oho belongs to and , above all , If any body with n title or n good Income who Is already on the committee personally dis likes the now worker. Ot course , this Is largely due to the want of early training In solidarity and In the Impersonal charac ter that properly belongs to n combination for some external object. A boy'i , education In this social spirit begins In his school and especially In regard to the sports. The man's education In this direction commen ces when he Joins a foot ball club anil sein aside a millionaire's eon who cannot play for a tradesman who canr or later n politi cal association and finds that ho must work with anybody who has any sort of Influence to "get In" the cnnilldato ot the "right color. " Here again vfBmen nro only beginning ginning- combine their' efforts with each other for a public end and to set on one side during the work , and for the work's pake , petty personalities , Allowance must be made for failures In large-minded views and In genuine organIzatlun among women till their training Is wider. The traits of character of Mrs. Ollphant and Jean Ingclow , as brought before the public by the recent donth of thcno two women , must cause all kinds of remorse In thu hearts of the present woman who hopes to hoist her sex > to n lofty ami Inde pendent position by boastings , struggles and AN EARLY AUTUA1N OOWN FROM HARPER'S UAZAR Never are clothes more enjoyed than lu the early autumn , when summer's hcat , still lingering In the'daytime , Is tempered by the coolness of the dawn and the even ! g. One cares more for a dainty gown to be worn in tlua pleasant mid-season than she dcco for the toilettes which wearied her when the humid atmosphere and torrid sun made life a burden and dressing a toll. Our pretty girl , still loitering in rural roMirto , may have her choice of beautiful cnitiunes by consull'gig Harper's Ilazar. The most exacting taste cannot but be satisfied with a gown ( Illustrated herewith and taken from that periodical ) of cream moussellnc do Mole over cream-colored silk. This would e be equally becoming to a blonde or brunette , and has the rharni of great daintiness and simplicity combined. The skirt , opening n little way cm one side , Is finished with lace Insertion nud a bow of reddish mauve velvet. The waist Is draped and shirred in wide bands , each frill of the shirring being headed with very narrow ribbon lu mauve velvet. The collar , belt and bows n/re also In mauve Velvet. The hat , of mauve velvet , Is finished with black ostrich tips. public exhibitions of personal spite. When ono considers the beauty of the lives ofj these two writers ho cannot but regret t.'iat the talented women of today are so ttnllko them in gentleness and womanly ambitions , i The general public knows little of either i Mrs. Oliphant or Miss Ingelow except what i It learned from the lovely .writings of both , ] and the private life of each was so retired , i so thoroughly shut In from the world , that , It Is almost unknown outside the circle of j [ their intimate friends. 'As with Mrs. 011- phant , so with Jean Ingelow , literature wan a cultivated pursuit. Their homes , their personal friends and the gratification of their simple tastes more tlian contented them. In fact , the bare Idea .of rushing Into the arena of striving , pushing , clamurous women workers was as repulsive to them as the thought of being lionized In society. Mrs. Ollphant was a home-loving and re served woman , a devott'd and model mother , a most sympathetic frlclia , while her nota ble contemporary , Miss Ingclow , found her happlneas In parish work and In the com | panionship of a few tried and trusted friends. It Is nald that the largest concoiireo of i women ever gathered together In conven tion In America'will be the coming conven tion of the Women's Christian Temperance union , which will meet In Torono , Canada , In October. Ten thousand delegates from | various parts of the globe will attend the meeting , which will be particularly interest ing on account of Ita cosmopolitan character alone. The unions are all busy at present arranging to send thulr delegates , and there will be present women tr/pm / Australia , ( Jape Colony , the Strait Settlements , China , Japan , South America and other cotintrUs. There will bo a delegation from Australia , headed by .Mrs , Kirk , and they will probably bo reinforced by Mlsfl Jetulo Ackorinun , who Ifl now in the United States , but who was for many years president and chief organizer of the Australasian union. Krom Egypt . will come Miss McDowell and Miss Franrea j J. Grimn. Great Ilrltaln will send over n powerful contingent , headed by Lady Henry Somerset. The Indian organization baa benn very desirous of sending the famoua I'uudlta Hainabal , and U Is possible alio may accept the honor and come as the leader of her people. Many thousands of men nnd women won dered when they read the following In the Chicago Tribune : WANTED One hundred babies. Call be tween 10 a. in , end R p. in , Tuesday. Mien Beatrice Louncson. Some thought the woman who wanted so many babies might bo wealthy and plill- ! anthroplc and a trifle Klven to fads , accordIng - ! Ing to one of which aliu WHS preparing to I utart an orphan asylum. Lots ot women call'hi as a ! matter of curiosity , when they learned Mlus ' Lomuson Is an artist , who U altio a photographer - j tographer , and that the bablts were tu betaken taken with a camera and given straight luck ! to their mothers. The Infants are not lim ited at ) to color or nationality. Hut they iiuuit all be pretty. Mlw Lonne- sea has planned to take the laughing ones first. Then , If the other fifty aren't crying by that time , she will flml BOIUO way to make them , Ono who hns made n thorough Investiga tion of the subject eays thnt ot the 700 mem bers of the American Library association the largo majority are women. There are various reasons why this calling la preeminently nently a woman's. The bump of order seems to be much more developed In a woman than In the sterner ecx. The work requires patlrnco nnd promptiuxs. two vir tues which women po nvs In a high degree , fltid does mot require hard physical labor. They are not exposed to the Bntno unpleasant Influences anil the liability of discourteous treatment that fall fo often to the oharo ot the woman In the mercantile world.
