NEW YORK , Aug. 13. n. O. Dun & Co.'a
Weekly Review of Trade tomorrow will
jay :
IJvery city reporting this week notes Increase
n trade , and nearly nil bright crop prospects.
The great change In business li emphasized by
Uio presence of a multitude of buyers from nil
pnrtu of the country , by their statements of
the situation at their homes , and more forcibly
yet by the heavy purchases they nre making.
Put the customary signs of prosperity nre not
lacking. The strong rise In stocks , the growth
of bank clearing * and railroad earnings , the
heavy speculation In many products , but most ,
of all In wheat , have made the week one of
surpassing Interest even to those who best re
member the upward rush In 1S7D. At the prin
cipal clearing houses throughout the country
payments In July wheat were for the llrst time
Bllgh.ly larger than In 1892 , nnd 11 per cent
larger than last year. In the fit-si week of Au
gust 7.7 per cent larger than In IR92 nnd 2S.4
per cent larger than last year , nnd In the seo-
end week of August they were 17.9 I > er cent
larger than In 1892 and 3S.1 per cent larger
than last year.
The great cn > p4 nnil the haste of foreigner * ID
buy and ship wheat In view of shortage else
where , have made the week memorable. The
taking of profits by a pool lowered the price
5 corns on S.uurday , but It IIM since rlsjn 5
cents. Western receipts , slow In July , have In
two weeks been 7,397,713 bushels , against 6,22.-
3fii last year , nnd Atlantic cxiwris , Hour In-
eluded , have been In the same two weeks 6,111.-
031 bushels , against 3,384,313 last yenr. Even the
demand for corn , by greatly exceeding last year ,
phous that foreign anxieties are serious , for
> ,510,13. > bushels have been exported 111 two
weeks from Atlantic ports , against 2,514.4:3 last
year. Th" price has advanced 1.12 cents , not
withstanding enormous Blocks being brought
over. The urgency of French buying of wheat ,
reports that llujsla. will stop exports In order to
keep supplies for Itself , nnd continued ship-
mnnts from the Pacific to the countries usually
having n surplus , m.iko even the largest inti
mates or supplies not too great for the possible
demand.
In all agricultural Industries a large demand
for products appears , with strong speculation In
material * and' Intcrnir-dlatn product * . In the
Iron nnd Mteel branch , starling of many works
after neltlement of wages , keeps prices low , and
even depresses nom" . but the fact that the de
mand Is growing , leads to heavy purchases of
Iron ore , a ) , < ) tons nt Cleveland In a week , and
of blll l8 , 4i ) , ( tons , while concessions recently ,
reported In pit : Iron have censed. The output
of furnaces August 1 wan 1C3.37S tons , against
1K1.064 July 1 , and decreases In known Mocks
unsold Indicates n consumption for two nionthi
past averaging 181OH ) tons weekly , which IH
more than 111 the Fame months of 1692 , though
below the greatly Increased capacity of works-
now. Sales of tin nre moderate , of copper to
American consumer * large. It Is-sald nt II cents
for lake nnd of lead at J3.12V4 with specufcillve
realizing , but heavy sales of tin plates are
bringing slightly Ix-Hw prices.
All the textile Industries are encouraged by a
greatly Improved and really large demand for
giKids , which causes many to advance In price.
With production much curtailed , stocks of cot
ton goods are rapidly decreasing , and 111 woolens
advances have b en made In clav worsted and
mixtures , flannel ? and middle suitings. Specu
lation In wool * continues , with prices nbout ' 4
cent higher , with sales of 23.49'JSO ' ) pounds In
two weeks , show the willingness of some hold
ers to realize.
Failures for the week have been 239 In the
United States , against 29S last year , and thirty
In Canada , against thirty-six last year.

NEW YOHK , Aug. 13-llradstrcct's review
of the stock market tomorrow will suy :
After a little hesitation nt the beginning ot
the week the market has broadened and advanced
on nn enormous volume ot transactions. Public
buylns of an aggressive kind has absorbed all
offerings , nnd the lending financial speculative
Interests have evidently lent 1'iclr aid to the
nwcment. A feature has been the attention
paid to low-priced nnd neglected securities ,
many slocks of this class advancing merely In
sympathy with the general movement of prices.
The advance In grain and confirmation of pre
vious estimates of Europe's requirements , to
gether with the drop In exchange nnd expecta
tions of large gold linpnrtii. nre among the lead-
Ing' factor * In sustaining the decided bullish
sentiments. The street Is also Influenced by the
Increasing returns of railroad earning * all over
the country , ns well ns by the account of the
volume which railroad earnings nre assuming.
The movement has not been without dangers ot
over-purchasing , nnd the creation of weak nc-
counts. A moderate selling movement on Friday ,
which was , however , flendled by the lending bull
Interests before It had gone very far , was there ,
fore looked upon with ome satisfaction ,

NEW YOHIC , Aug. 13.-Qulte a number of
factors combined today to exercise a rather
iresslng Influence on values on the Slock ex
change. There nlso were other Incidents which ,
though not calculated to have any effect on in
trinsic value , served to put n damper on the
speculative ardor which has become rampant
in Wall street. The tone of the weakness ami
hesitancy In the wheat market on account ot
lower prices abroad nnd n diminished export de
mand were most keenly fell In Ihe stock muikti.
The craln carrying roadsot coume showtd most
sympathy with the wheat market us being most
Immediately nlteclcd. Hut almost every depart
ment of the market was more of less Influenced
on the ground that the return of prosperity
would be more helped by good prices to the
farmer for his crops than by any other out
tiling. Besides thld very Important Influence to

buyers looked decidedly askance at Ihe specula-
lion which broke out yesterday and today In
what the street aptly terms "cats and dogs , '
meaning dlKcarded odds and ends of stocks and
yecurltles which no longer icpresent anything
of any appreciable value In Ihe whole world.
There was more or less movement In this clans
of stocks , ns was the case yesterday , but ad
vances were by nc , means affected as yesterday.
Even bull operaloru discourage Ihe movement
In Ihls department of the market. It being an
accepted maxim that activity In It presages the
culmination of n bull movement and subsequent
reaction. This coimlder.Mloii combined to Induce
some large selling to rl-nllze on many of Ihe
slocks which led In the speculation. The only
aggressive Htrengtli.ndltjilnyed . dining the day
was by some of Hoi -great Industrial clocks.

A fairly strong tone permeated the bond spec-
illation during the greater part of the tfay , but
In the late dealings the marked depression IN
the stock market exerted nn unsettling effect on
the speculative Issues generally. The aggrcgati
sales were J2.823.000. Governments displayed a
sagging tendency on moderate trading.
The Evening Post's Ixmdon financial cable
gram says : "There was n general reaction In

There wns a sharp rally at midday , hut as

I nm told Trench buying has ceased for the
rnoment. This In no way contradicts what 1
cabled nbout Trench exchange. In xplte of the
recent selling of Americans here the best opin
ions consider that American ( securities are too
well established now to bo shaken by any mod
erate reaction , A healthy shakeout will , it is
telleved , Induce fresh buying , liar gold Is quoted
nt 77s llTid , but there has been no further sale
of bars by the Hank of England , thus con
firming the exceptional nature of the sales early
In the week. Kafllrs were dull. Interest In them
centers upon the mining reforms and the con-
cefHlons by the Transvaal government. Today's
I/indon discount for three months is 1V $ per cent ,
but the forward quotation for next week Is Hi
per cent. Krench exchange was quoted at widely
different figures nt the close , ranging from
ri.lT'-io to 2" .19'.4c. Paris and Herlln were steady.
Trench exchange has again linen sharply. The
reason U understood In be the large sales ot
wheat drafts by New York on Paris , thus threatening
ening- gold exports from Trance. Trench mar-
chants are , therefore , buying bills on Ixindon In
order to ship gold If neci snry from there. "
