TAK1FK SHI ? North and South Lines Attempt to Eecuio Some Summer Travel RATES CUT TO ST , PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS HnllroiiilM Miikc Clicnii Itntcn to the . Viirlli , tluit 1'iiRMctiKi'r Irntvl Ma ) Hi * Turned In Hint Direction. There will bo a cut of (2.45 In the rallroail rates from hero to St. I'aul next week. The tariffs of all the lines leading from Omaha to thu Twin Cities call for a rate of $11.05 , Init the tariff sheets will bo Ignored , nml a rate of $350 will be offered on Juno 2S , 20 and 30 and on July 1 and 2. The Burling ton and the Nort hues tern announced the cut vcetcrdiy. Neither the Hock Island nor the Milwaukee rondo have jet received ad vices of the cut , but expect to. The Chicago Great Western , one of the western linen that la acting the part ot a frec-lanco In passenger rates , much to the \\orrliiicnt of the lines that belong to the Western Passenger association , la the line that has Inaugurated the cut to St. Paul , and having act the pace , Is quite content to SLO the roads belonging to the association whipped Into line. The Chicago Qrcat Went , ern first announced the rate of $8 50 from Kansas City to St. Paul. The competing lines then announced a similar rate. In or der , however , to put In such a rate from Kansas City It was necessary that no higher rate bo charge from Intermediate points Hence the rate of $ S CO from here to St. Paul that will bo applied next vvcck. Although the Chicago Great Western Is nut of thu association and association lines overlook no opportunity to denounce It for Its free-lance policy , passenger men In Omaha generally concced that the Great Western la justified In putting In the cut rate to St. Paul next week. The reason for the cut la that there will be then In effect such extremely low tales to San rrancUco , Silt I akc City , Denver , Colorado Springs and Pueblo that travel is bound to be attracted westward unless something Is done by the north and south lines. It Is argued that In the case of an undecided passenger , who liana that It will ccst him ? 15 to go to St. Paul and only $9 to go to a Colorado point , the chances arc greatly In favor of his going westward Therefore the cut haa been made In northbound rates In the hope of equal izing next week's travel. Notwithstanding the cut by the Omaha- St. Paul and the Kansas Clty-St. Paul lines , It is resonably certain that the great bulk of next week's passenger traffic will be westbound. It Is predicted by conservative passenger men that next week's movement will be the heaviest ever known between the Missouri river and the Pacific coast One serious problem Is already confronting ; the- railroads that have contracts for numer ous parties , namely : A lack of tourist sleepers. The demand for these slcepei" which , though rated as pecond-class , are well adapted for summer travel. Is something un precedented. As the rate In these sleepurs Is only $5 from here to the coast , the lirst- class Pullmans have hern practically over looked , and all the roado are hustling for second-class equipment. On the sleeper busi ness the Pullman company has a veritable monopoly on all business originating from this teirltory , as there are no Wagner lined running from here to the coast. A number of solid Wagner trains will be scon In this vicinity , however , coming from eastern lines that do not patronize the Pullman cam There will be five solid Wagner trains from the territory of the Hoston & Albany pass through here next week In addition to those from New York state. These will bo small compared with the many Pullman trains that will also como from the cast. As there will be ho opportunity to use Wagner cars from hero west , there Is no possibility of a cut In slceplng-car rates. TraliiM io ItlcrIcn Park. The committee objects W the plan because the Improvements which 'It requires Iho city to make will require a larger expenditure than is possible , and also because the terms ot the proposition arc not clear with regard lethe the property that la to be exempted from taxation on account of future Improvements. U provides that none of Mr Turner's prop erty shall be taxed , but docs not specify the property that ho owns. The plan recommended by the committee , and which has been tuggested before. Is lo convert Iho entire ravine , extending from Hurt Blrect soulhwcst to the Haneeom pirk boulevard , into A park. The comnrlllee con- Unds , however , that action In this direction should be pcMponcd until the adjacent property owners manifest enough Interest In the project to support It In lha proper man ner. The committee report will suggest that from the nature of the ground the property Included In this strip can never be used for anything except cheap dwelling ! , and to establish such a neighborhood would detract from the value ot the adjoining resi dence property. It Is held thai the ravine should be condemned and the cost assessed against the abutting property , and that the Improvement of the ttrlp as a park would odd sufficiently to the value of the lots ad joining to more than compensate the owners for the cost of condemnation.
