CHICAGO , May 17. All the pr.tln nnd
provision markets ruled weak today und
closed at declines. Wheat was directed by
weak cables and heavy world's shipments
and declined IHc. Corn and oats lost Utf
lie. Provisions suffered severely , poik los
ing 22VijC , while Inrd and ribs declined
about 7'/4 cncli.
Hulls In wheat hnil ft good de-at of bearish
news to dlRe'st at the opening. The chief
Items of Information were comprised In the
weakness of foreign markets , line giowing
wenthcr and very heavy northwestern re
ceipts. They caused an Immediate unload
ing at n decline of from Ic to I'.ic per bu.
of u good deal of July wheat. The first
trades In thill morilh'H delivery were at
from 71T4C down to 71' ' ; c , us compared with
72c Saturday. In Itss than an hour July
bad dropiwd to 71Uc. The bulls hnil more
than lias yet bfli mentioned to sicken
them of thflr holdings , The world's ! < hlp-
inonts last week , wore ii,51iorxJ ! bu. , com-
jiared with l,743mxi bu. on the wi'k before.
This is the largest amount reported In
months nnd a I AC decline at Liverpool was
nccrudlted to that fact. The quantity on
ocean passage Increased 1,0inwu bu.Mln -
iimpollM and Uiiluth received fM oars ,
ngaliiBt 410 .Monday a week ago and 401 the
corresponding day of the year before. The
vlHlblc supply decreased lUTiiii)0 ! ) bu. . against
n 1,000 bu. decrease a year ago. The market
was not Immediately iifloctcd by such n
heavy disappearance of elevator stocks
since a week ago , but when the lant cable
gram from Liverpool showed 10 of the
earlier l'd decllno hail been recovered the
price here bognn gradually to rise , and
nboilt 12 o'clock had reached 7UM(72c. ( It
was said that ( KXM.M ) bu. or so of the wheat
icported sold last week for shipment east
by laku WIIK today being loaded Into ves
sels. That ulpo helped toward the re
covery. Hut the niarkiu weakened again
after it spurt to 72&c ! , and by closing time
liquidation had forced July down to 71-Uc.
Corn was fairly active. The market was
very weak early on the line weather , the
break In wheat and selling by elevator
people. Later shorts covered liberally and
part of thn decline was recovered. I2x-
jiorts wete ISO.UtiO bu. July opened % c
lower nt 2lc , sold at 21c and reacted to
ZITtc. wheru It closed.
Only a moderate business wns transacted
in oats. The tone for the most part was
weak on the line weather , but cash busi
ness partially counteracted this. I'rlces
kept within a narrow range. The visible
decreased ! > 1 ! > ,000 bu. July opened about
' /4c lower nt 17lilSc , sold between 17c
and WflSlic , closing at 17WilSc. ;
1'rovlslons were weak with everylhlnjc
lower all dny. The flnu weather , large hog
receipts and thn break In wheat all helped
In the decline. The market Imil no support
except from shorts. The cash demand wits
only moderate. At the close July pork wns
22140 lower at $3.22" " , July laid 7'/4c lower at
jt.-0 : anil July ribs about 5c lower nt ? 4.30.

WA9IIINQTON , May 17. The Agricultural
ilepartmcnt Iq eiiKngeJ In some practical ex
periments with a view to extending our but
ter market abroad. The development ot the
dairy Interests of the United States Is one ot
the favorite schemes of Secretary Wilson ,
who believes that the farmers of the country
canbo greatly benefited by the ealo of the
Incidental products ot thu farm. Our foreign
checso market has declined steadily for the
past twenty years and In recent years has
Buffered Immense damage from thn shipment
of "filled cheeso" and other Inferior cheeses.
Twenty years ago the United States shipped
to the United Kingdom about half the checso
Imported by the llrltlsb Isles. Canada has
steadily displaced our cheese , until wo now
ship to UiiRland less tlis.il one-quarter of Its
Imports , while Canada sends one-half aa
much more , and as Hng ! < iml now Imports as
much clit > o ( > G as It did In lS7fi , the loss of
trade In this ono Item Is enorinoua. Now
that all our filled cheese must bo branded , wo
may regain sonic of thla trade , but nt the
Agricultural department , Major Alvord , chief
of the Oft'lry division , bays It will require
time nnd circumstances to re-establish tno
reputation of our checso ami win back the
trade we have lost ,
In the matter of butter It Is thought there
Is a much better opportunity for pushing our
producto at this time. Our exports of butter
have been comparatively small In the past
and the butter shipped abroad has been al
most entirely , until last year , of an Inferior
quality. This wns due to the fact that the
choicest grades commanded a higher price In ,
this country than could bu obtained for them
abroad. Hut last year there was n surplus of
good butter produced In the United States.
The surplus of high grade creamery butters
produced promises to Increase through the In
crease -In creameries , though consumption fell
oft in the United States , owing principally to
the hard limes , and the price naturally fell ,
and about 20,000,000 pounds were placed
within reach of the exporters , as against
5,500,000 pounds In 18P5. A largo proportion
of this exportation wns gooil butler. Major
Alvord says that we cannot hope to export
good butter when It sells at Icea than IS
cents In New York , which would make the
prlco In London , allowing for freights and
commissions , about 20 cents. Denmark ,
Sweden , France , Canada and Austral ! * gen
erally supply the Drltlsu market , which last
year bought about 81,000,000 pounds.

Sunday cvcr.lng by Deputy Sheriff Hoard has
