Tlic six days put linve witnessed
still further progress In the upward move

business situation of the city nnd tributary

not especial ! } rapid , but It Ifl constant , nnd
ijvory Indication would ncem to point In n
continuance. Thtin Mr the most marked
Improvement Is to bo found In jobbing and
manufacturing circles , duo to the fact that
the country was the first to experience nn
Uiislng up In money , due to the sale of farm
crops nnd live slock. The Improvement ,
however , Is extending to nil department
of business and IH comm nclriR to be felt
by the local retail trade , which would ,
under the condition prevailing In Ibis clly ,
bo Hie last to cxtwrlence nny marked re
vival.
The country Is still \cry much disposed to
luy cheap goods , and the demand for higher
priced merchandise of nil kinds Is very light
In nil cases where It Is possible to make
u cheaper and Inferior article answer the
purpose deslnd. It U only natural to ex
pect , however , thai the craze for cheap
Koods will gradually wpnr llself out us
money becomes easier nnd peoples feel tint
they can afford to bo n little more liberal
in the mutter of expenditures , lly reason
of the great quantity of cheap goods thai

Hales , hs compared with previous years ,
when higher priced Koodi were free sellers ,
makes a very poor showing. It may also
bo added thai the dlllleulty of selling
higher priced goods nt present constllulcs
Iho most frequent cause or complaint on
the p-irl of manufacturers and Jobbers.
They are selling goods enough , but the only
trouble Is that they arc tinnlilc to sell the
kind of gociU that Ihoy vmnt to sell and
the kind upon which Ihere Is Home proIH.

The outlook for the Jobbing trade of this
city l'i certainly very bright , and Itwould
bft a dllle.ult ! matter to Imagine a con
dition of affairs moro promising thnn that
now at hand. During the p tnlc years east
ern Jobbers were scared out ot this teirl-
tory , nnd western merchants were foircd
to buy their goods nearer iir home , as tbeli
home Jobbers were the only ones who bad
HUlllclcnt confidence In the tecuperatlve
ability of the country to pu : out merchan-
dhu on the usual terms of trcdlt The re
sult was that the Omnha Jonbers IncreaKM
the number of accounts on their hooks
with ijteat rapidity Uvon during the
height of the dull times , wnen no one was
buying more than was absolutely necea-
miy nnd when the whole western country
appeared to be trying to see how little It
was iiecessiiiy to have In older to sustain
life , the jobbers were steadily Increasing
the number of accounts on their books.
Merchants who had been In the habit of
Kolng east for goods suddenly found it to
their Interest to buy nearer home.
Now , then , It Is generally conceded by
\ those who me In n position to know that re-
tall Blocks over the whole country are ex
tremely low , and that merchants In eveiy
line have been dolpg- business In a hand-to-
mouth manner. It would follow then that
with the Inri eased number ot accounts on
their books even a moderate Increase In
the country consuming denmnil would bring
In n Hood of buying ordeiu that would nl-
most swamp the jobbing houses. This Is
what a good many expect to see In the near
future and some are nlready making
piepit itlons to meet It.
During the p-ist three years Omaha job-
bei.s have penetrated Into new teirltor >
that they did not think It possible to handle
from this point before , nnd have added still
fuither to thu number of buyers who seek
this m irkct
At C'hliURO business Is vetv dull No one
in C'hlcigo attempts to dispute the fact
and much of the dullness lj unmlstakibb
duo to the rcroat shrinkage In the trade of
that city west of tha Mississippi river. U
now , icmalns to bn seen whether the citj
b > the lakes will over be able to regain Its-
lost prestige In this territory orvhp.hei
Omaha Jobbers who staved by the trade
elinlng the scary times will be able to hold

Duslnchs at South Omnhn continues In n
most FMtlsfactory condition , receipts of
Htock being liberal and the market favora
ble As already pointed out In previous re
ports the prlce > s nt which live stock Is sell
ing -ire netting the producer very band-
Homo prollts , and there Is general sitlsfic-
tlon In nil blanches of the trade. The live
s tnck business , or more especially the cattle
Industry , appears to bn Just entering upon
a period of great activity and ns well ns of
high prices. The supply of cattle has been
gradually falling lower until all of a sud
den Htockmi > n have come to icallze that
cattle are becoming sea co. nnd now they
nil want them. If anyone had predicted a
tow years ago , at the time of the cattle
gluts and when fortunes wcro being lost
in the shrlnKugc tof cattle values , that Iowa
would be Importing stock cattle from
Gnnada to renlunlsh the declm ited herds In
1S97 ho would have been regarded as u ( It
candidate for an asylum.

The season for fresh fruit nhlpments from
Cnllfoinla IH now neur ac nand , but U Is
coming none too soon , ns good apples arc
no longer to ho had and otanpes arc ! be
coming scarce and high , nnd it would not
bo long until there -would bo nothing but
berries on the market. It Is safe to pity
that California fruits ara the man popular
of all that come to this .niiiilcot , and the
time when there will bn n Plentiful sunp'.y
is eageily awaited by many people. Sonic
people like ) apple" , others fancy oranges and
Htlll others crave' small fruits , such n
strawberries , but eveiy one onjoyn Cali
fornia fruits , and the consumption of cher
ries , pene-hes , plums , pears and apricots
from thnt state Is becoming hnger every
year.
Tor n city oC Its size pninlin has always
been a very large buyer of California fruits ,
nnd n good many carlo ins aru disposed of
In the course of a summer season
The tlrst shipments from California In
considerable quantities will be of cheriles ,
followed liv nprlcots , IJien earlv peachi > s ,
nnd later plums , prunes , the Inrdlorccjuhe *
and iiL'.irrt. The season this jcnr Is snld to
bu about two weeks later th'in usual , but
the cra- > promises to bei vary abundant.
Cherries have already commenced to go
forward , but In verv limited quantities so
far. The Mrst cherries of the season sold
In Chicago nt $ ( ! per ton-pound box.
The movement of fruit this reason Is ex
pected to bo for the most pirt in refili-
erator rars , the same as laHt year nnd yt.ir
before. Heretofore fiult transported In re
frigerator e.ira lias been sent on regular
trains , making usual schedule freight time
to eastern cities. This sea-ua the Southern
Pac-lllc has made arrangements for special
fapt trains thnt will save suvernl hours
time between Sacramento and Ogden and
put thu fruit liito Omaha In a much frcslu-r
condition. It fa also proposed to time trains
so that they will arrive hero In time for
early moinlni ; deliveries Instead of ntrlv-
Ing after the close of the day's mntket ,
thus being forced to lay over until the next
day.
IjvervthliiK would se-em to point to the
probability of there being a large supply
of fruit at Omaha from thu const this sen-
non , and nil largo receipt ! ) usually menu
reasonable prlcns It will bo within the reach
of every oiu desiring to buy.

There la an abundance of good government

SEATTLE , May 15. The schooner Stella
A. Krlaiul has arrived In port from Ccoka
Inlet , the. first vessel fiom there this season.
The Ki land passed through the longltudo
and latitude where the Slgleln was last
sighted , but rcpoita having seen no signs of
the Icot schooner. The reported loss of thrco
men in crossing the portage to I'rlnco Will-
lain sound Is but a part of the disaster. U
seems that a party of six men left the Inlet
to cross the portage and meet the first
steamer from Juncau. When this party had
been out for several days another party of
three George Hotelier of this city , C. A.
Blacktitona and J. W. Malimnu started
after them. When thu Erland left the inlet.
May 1 , neither of thcso parties had been
heard from , the latter being ten daja over
due.
