Our vlstia and mental angles are different. I have witnessed , from start to finish , three ex- peit bull fights within a mouth , brought of ! In thu mo.it modern amphitheater In Mex ico. I am gnlng to describe ono of thcci lights , an photographed on my mental ret- Inn , and Icavo readers of Thu rtco to de cide as to the brutality and cowardice. It was a bright , sunshiny Sunday after noon , that of Marcli 28 , when Colonel Strong of Omaha and myself drove .up to the Plaza do Toros. Uy way of parenthe- slii , the colonel , ns you Omnhans know , lane no gingerbread officer , but the genuine ar ticle , who rode at the head of his Wis consin regiment In our "late unpleasant ness" and has been walking around on a ligneous leg ever since an a result of his bravery. Inside the amphitheater a military band was playing a we climbed the stone Hleps to our seats , "a Fombra , " I. e. , In the shade. A 4:30 : sharp a bugle sounds. The double gates In the six-foot tencc arc thrown open , and through the passage thus Afforded to the 200-foot ring there enters first 121 Cnpltan , the matador. An athlete ho Is' , over six feet tall , shapely , with broad shoulders , clean shaven face anil wearing the Jaunty but practical dress of Ills profession spangled knee breeches , pink Bilk stockings , sandals , profusely embroi dered bolero. After him come the eight capeadorcs , nil similarly though less richly costumed , followed by the two plcadorcs on horseback , the latter armed with long Etecl-polntcd poles , nnd their horses' breasts protected by heavy leather guards or aprons. Around the ring they march , acknowledging the applause , until they come In front of the Judges' stand , where they bow pro foundly. Again the bugle sounds. la on Instant the cnpcadorcs are picturesquely scattered around the ring , the horsemen take posi tions a few rods to the right nnd left of the entr.ince gate. El Capltan walks over to the fence and selects a capa. The gates arc thrown open and In plunges AN UGLY IJULU receiving In Us right shoulder , as It comes , a barbed shaft , decorated with the colors of thn ranch on which he was raised , the first of many barbs which he Is to feel. The pnln maddens him and , spying the horse at the left , ho makes a fierce plunge for him. The picador , by spur nnd bridle , tries to bring the horse's shielded breast to the front , but is not quick enough. The bull strikes him broadside , lifts horse and rider oft the ground , at the same time receiving fierce Jobs from the lance. Down go hcrso nnd man , the horse not to rise again. Two or three assistants run to help the fallen picador nnd pull him from under his horse , while the over-ready cnpeador engages the atten tion of the distracted bull by flaunting his colored capa before him. The bull charges and the man , trailing the cape behind , makes for the nearest shelter , of which there are four about the ring , while another capeador flannla another capa nnd attracts the bull's attention to himself , and Incidentally , In the direction of the other horseman. This time the picador Is quicker and the bull strikes the guard on the horse's breast , throwing him , by the fierce Impact of his charge , upon his haunches , but doing no further damage , \vhllo ho gets several thrusts from the sharp- pointed lance. Again the bugle sounds nnd the two horse men the ono first thrown having re-entered on a fresh mount gallop out of the ring. Tlila leaves only bull and men. Now one of the binderlllrros advances toward the bull with arms outstretched and poising In each hrnil a dart. There Is a mad plunge , but In vain , the only result being that two more stinging barbs are hanging from the brute's shoulders , and the man who placed them IB eafcly out of harm's way thanks to El Cap ital ! , who has now for the first time appeared In the game , shaking his capo before the bull , Inviting n charge , which comes. For no tdielter doth this athlete rush , but steps to ono side with the llthcnesu nnd grace of n panther and again displays his cloth. A second end time the bull charges and a second time Ifl avoided an gracefully , nn llthely as be fore. A third and a fourth and a fifth time comes the rutdi , hut the same agility meets him. A caprador now relieves the captain anil flaunts hla cloth before the now thor- .oughly Infuriated animal. Off goes the bcniit , so suddenly that all the man can do la to make for the six-foot fcnco and vault it , which ho does , leaving his capa athwart the top. Ami after him , over the elx-foot fence , vaults the bull , landing In a circular passage , where the man gcta to shelter none too soon. It was a close call , that , One of the gates Is opened nnd the bull again enters thu ring. Cnpeadorcs and bandcrllleros re peat UIP performance until the bull has eight or ten torturing bauderllloa hang ing from his shoulders ami producing additional fury with hla every motion. For the last tlmo the trumpet sounds , and Kl Capltan , the matadnre , walks calmly out , holding In Ills left hand d brilliant red cloth , about two feet square. In which la concealed his sword , The bull Instantly spies the hue , charges more ferociously than ever , when , quick as the lightning's flash , Just as It seems that this prlnco of bull fighters must be Impaled on the ad vancing horns , the sword Is drawn and , with u single imiBcular thrust , from the- front of the left shoulder , straight through thu heart It goes. The beast drois | as though struck by a cannon ball , right at the matadore's feet , the latter not having moved from his tracks. Then pandemonium , sombreros , cigars and cigarettes nru showered Into the arena. T.ho matador bown and smiles as ho walks around the ring , and , with tils assistant * , gracefully tosBfs back the hats to their owners. The cigarettes , etc. , he keeps. I counted seventy sombreros of admirers In the ring at ono tlmo. Meantime , two horsemen havu gal loped In , lassoed the fallen bull and gal loped out again , and the ring In ready for thu next. From four to nix bulls are killed at each fight , but the killing of ono will BUfllco for a description of the whole , as the general details are the name , thought the animals differ In fierceness and power of endurance. Such wan a flrat-claw bull fight M I BAW ft. Ilrutnl ? No moro no IJian foot ball and a hundred limes more graceful. In consequence of this the department officials recently Instructed Major Frank , E. Nye , commissary of subsistence for the De partment of the Platte , to purchase hereafter In this city almost double Ihe number of articles for the use of the army In the de partment than was done In the past year. This Increase was brought about through the efforts of Major Nye , who has urged upon { ho War department Oinaha'n avail ability an a market. In response to these efforts the department ofllccrs during the early part of tills month Instructed the com missary to increase the purchases. It was distinctly stated , however , that the matter was simply an experiment and that the list of articles to be purchased hero would be again decreased If It were found that the goods wcro not as cheap and of as good quality as could be obtained In other cities. The list has been augmented wltti a con siderable number of articles , particularly canned goods , spiers and sundries. With this addition , the amount of supplies to be pur chased In the future , It the experiment Is found to be satisfactory , will be almost double the value of purchases lost year. This will mean n substantial gain to the trade of the city , slnco last year's purchases aggregated about $150,000. WATCHING THE RESULT. The army ofllclals nro awaiting with con siderable Interest the result of the experi ment. Tltcy linvo held that Omnlin mer chants could furnish the added articles as cheaply as they could bo obtained In New York , Chicago nnd San Francisco , where they have been obtained before. Whether this Is a fnct or not will be discovered on May 4 , when the proposals for furnishing the supplies will be opened. The advertise ment Is now being published in The Bee. There has been a gradual Increase In Into years of the amount of supplies purchased In this city for the Department of the Platte. Four yenrs ngo the number of articles wan very small and Included only the products of the packing houses and the mills In the Immediate vicinity. The list has been In creased as Omaha's ability to furnish articles became known , but the biggest Increase was the recent one. Army ofllclala maintain that It has been entirely the fault of Omaha merchants tliat they have not In past yeara shown that Omaha was a good market. While It Is true that for the majority of the articles bids lind to be sent to Chicago , New Yorker or Sr.n Francisco , yet the army people main tain that the merchants of the city should have sent In proposals , If for no other rea son than to Indicate that they were de sirous of furnishing the supplies and could furnish them If the bids were received and the purchases were made In this city.
