A candid but not complimentary English
tourist , In writing Ills reminiscences , some
years ago , of his travels In the United States ,
alluded to the people of America as "a nation
of candy-caters , " seeming to Imply thereby
that moro candy In proportion to the popu
lation was eaten In the United States than In
any other country.
In fact , this srltlclum of the English traveler
eler- was Inaccurate , BUJ-H the Now York Sim ,

In the United States bear a modest proportion
tion to the amount consumed , per capita. In
other lands , but a considerable amount of
American candy Is exported to other coun

candy valued nt ; $712D52 , and In 1S9G the
export was vxortl ) jSOO,000. In 1890 there

been widened by'tjie ( systematic development
of the sugar Interests of the United Suites
and by thu tarfft regulations designed to ex

as possible the Importation of foreign con-

numerous and Imrmrtcnt. Tbcio is , first of
all , an abundance' bf sugar. The other In
gredients are all available , and thcro Is an
enormous homo market for candy In the (

Veracious historians ghe figures In cor-

beginning of this century the city of Phila
delphia was the headquarters of the Ameri

twelve establishments devoted to the manu
facture of candles New York and Iloaton
came next , but for more than half a century
Philadelphia kept the lead , and even at
present Philadelphia candles are among ex

pared with yesterday there was a. falling
oft of 1,400 head. It Is very evident that
there Is no surplus of cattle in the count ! >
tributary this market , and thobe who
anticipate high prices for the balance , of the
season would seem to lueve good , strong
arguments on their side.
As to the market , \alues today did not
show much chance In any direction.
The supply of beef slecrs was small to
what It was jesterday and Ihc day belore ,
hut local packers have been very free
buyers and they did not eem quite so anx
ious for cattle as on some days. Still there
was aery fair demand and desirable kinds
sold quite readily at Just about .steady
prices. Cattle that were not especially at
tractive did not move off quite so freely , hut
on the contrary , salesmen were calling the
murl'r easier on such. Hnyers were report
ing the market as fully steady on all kinds
The bulk of the beef cattle sold at $1 lift I 40
Bute-tiers' stock was Inery moderate
supply and cows and heifers were ieiul >
sellers at fully htcady prices. The buyers
all wanted cattle of that description and
offerings were sown taken. One hunch of
prcttj fair western heifers sold up to (3 G >
Stockers and fecdeis kept up their pice ,
selling fully as high as any time. The
supply vv.is small , the high prlees falling to
bring in un > thing like liberal receipts
The country dem.ind holds up and every
thing at all desirable meets with readj
sale , lieprcsontativc sales :
