CHICAGO , JInrch ID. Prlccn on the Hoard
J Trade showed a. general Improvement nt
itho cloao of today's tradlnB. Wheat was
the most active and shorts were Induced to
covfreely near ' .ho close of the session
on reports of hcnvy export business at the
ncaboanl and a varied assortment of war
rumors from the continent. May -vrticat
closcil'Tic higher , corn Mo higher , oats % ®
lo higher and jirovlslons 2&c higher.
WUcat opened at a llnht advance upon
yesterday's closing prices , the demand at
the Immediate start belnjr more urgent for
May than July. It might perhaps bo more
correct to say that there was more pres
sure to sell the later delivery at that time.
The extra pressure on July widened the
difference between It and May from lo per
bu. , as nt the close yesterday , to H4c above
half an hour after the trading began this
morning. The opening advance had , In the
time mentioned , been tranaformcil Into a
nllglit decline In May and u somewhat more
decided drop In July , corresponding to the
widening of the spread referred to. The in
itial advance was caused by Liverpool jiuot-
Intf an advance of ftd per cental , which It
iwnn concluded munt bo bccauso of a better
consumptive demand In the United King
dom , seeing PSiat there had been no en
couragement from here the day before. The
nlmi-o ot weakness which succeeded the
Hllght rise at the start \vas at llrst more
the result .of action of n few heavy local
scalixsrs than of further news. In the course
of an hour a , private cablegram reporting
V\A ot Uho opening advance at Mverpop
lost helped the people wno had ospousei
the bear side. Slay irot ilown to 73iC < and
July to 72VWi72c and nfter recovering Uc
irado almost died out lor a time. May
wheat was notlcenb'y scarce when wanted
nnd the demand for It was stimulated bl
the -evlval ot export bu.slnpFS. New lork
reported thirty-one boatloads sold for for-
clmi shipment , all but six loads , however ,
for 'May ' and June shipment. Hero 77.000 bu
wore sold foi shipment to domestic1 millers
fcorn was llrm from beKlnnhiR to end. The
continued InrKO clearances from the sea
board which , although nn everyday or-
currenco now for snino weeks , are phenom
enally largo as compared with any previous
season nnd helped the price considerably.
The reported exports today were almost
1,000,000 bu. May opened a shade higher at
2le. sold for a moment 1-Hio lower , then
hardened nnd was Jirotind 25o In the last
Imlf hour , but readied SUc finally nnd
closed with sellers nt that nnd 23c bid.
Up to within a hnlf hour of the close oats
was slow nnd no news of any account de
veloped. The feellnff early was Inclined
toward easiness , but firmed up later , when
wheat did likewise. May started unchanged
tit 1711c , sold to 17 * f 17V&c nnd cloned with
sellers nt the top price.
Provisions were fairly active nnd firm.
Packers were said lo be quite heavy sellers
of ribs through brokers. May pork. May
lard and May rlba each closed at a ualii of
2V-C.
2VC.sllmaled receipts : Wheat , 18 cars ; corn ,
1SJ cars ; oats , 170 cars ; hogs. 12,000 head.

farmer , resident in the vicinity , made a
very comfortable sum of money by Insuring
its neighbors' crops ngalnst thcso freshets.
His unvarying success as an Insurer was for
many years a profound mystery * to the people -

clined to insure were Invariably years of
destructive overflow. The years whan ho
was willing to insure were equally certain
