Corn was Very idiieh under the dullness

Ijlverpool wan steady and corn receipts

The feature In outs was the Increased
liquidation by May longs and was the main

familiar story of small hog receipts started
the market with a tush. Armour and
Cudahy were both credited with being free

was noticeable. At the close May pork was

M-UV YOnK , Jlnrch 1C. Tlie opening of the
stock market gave every promise of n repetition
of yesterday's course of events , the strong buyIng -
Ing nioicmcnl In the VnndciblH properties , which
ga\e strength to the whole market , being re
newed nt the opening. The licars were face to
tiive with a rather serious situation , and they
opened up their campaign lo check the advance
1 1) prefsure on the granger shares , using ihc
report * of nn unfavorable trnor regarding crop
prospects nnd the poor trnfllo prospects on nc-
couat of snow blockades on country roads In
the noithwert ns material In the raid. The
CnniKcrM were. In consequence , somewhnt do-
pretrcd , nml denllngs In them fell oft. Hut the
Itf'Hr faction found n fnr more effective lnstru >
ment In Mltrourl Pncinc , which was mnde th *
eenler of attack. There was no mistaking the
persistency nnd purpose with which reports w r
kept In circulation calculated to damage the
credit of this company. They were to the en > cl
that It would be unable lo meet Intiicst charges
acciulng at nn early date and would In confc-
iiuonce go Into the hands of n receiver. Under
the Inlluence of there rumor * the stock fell com
tlnuously , the decline covering 3i per cent , nml
the stock touched 15 , the lowest on record , The
consolidated B per cent bonds of the rend were
offered at that , nnd the collateral Cs at CO , ngalnst
the preceding transactions nt S3 and OS , re
spectively. The collateral SH sold later nt C3.
This \\enkness exercised a decided ( reactionary
Inlluence on the whole list.Vabash prefeired
displayed most active sympathy with Missouri
Pacific , being unusually active nnd showing a
drop of 1H per cent , \\ltli a final rally of ? *
PIT cent. The general mnrkct nlro sympathized
In the decline In Missouri Pacific , the decline
being on nn average of i per cent. Theic was
n \ery notable falling off In the volume of trail
ing on the decline. There was , however , heavy
liquidation In Missouri Pacific. I.ncknwnnnn ,
In opposition to the cut rent of the market und ut
the coalers , which were heavy , rose 1 1 per
cent to 157'.i. ' The continued drop finally cllclte.l
a formal statement from President ( leorge J.
( lould to thn effect that the rumors of a receiver
ship for the Mlsfouil Pacific were absolutely
without foundation.
"If any of the bondholders wish to cnr-h their
April coupons now , " Mr. Qould said , "I will
pay the coupons with tliclr face value , charging
Ilia 0 per cent Interest on the money thus ad
vanced , In my opinion , the attack on the stock
and the reports of receivership are the result of
a desire to cover short sales In other stocks.
The c iterators on the short side of the market
cannot make money now , for the country has
started on the march of Improvement. "
Upon the publication of tils : statement , a ic-
covery promptly set In In Missouri Pacific , and
eventually all the lorn In t ic earlier part of the
day was recovered , the general market also responding
spending tu the Improvement , the final prices
being In ninny cases the test of the day. The
course of the Industrial shares erc laigely In-
dcpndent of the general list. Sugar was de
pressed a fraction nt the opening , but a very
wlrong buying movement set In on the strength
of estimates of profits possible under the pro-
pused Dlngley tariff. The price nagged to 111 %
ex-dlvldend , but rose Inter to 1134. The llubber
shares weic strong throughout on licston pur
chases. Tlie total imles of stocks aggregated
235,0iO shares , nnd or these Sugar and Missouri
Pnclllo ab.'oibed over lo.'i.ioo shares.
The bond market moved Irregularly on mod
erate transactions , which Included a wide variety
of Issues. TheJ undertone of the rnirkct , how
ever , was firm , nnd Importnnt gains were regis
tered In some cares. Wabash 2s were notably
heavy and broke 2 per cent. Iron Mountain fs
fell off I'i percent on rumors affecting the Inter
est dlchiirsentents , but later recovered the frac
tion. The sales \\crc S1.4CO.OOO. Governments
were neglected , but weak In tone. The sales
were tt.OOO.
The i\-fiilng Post's London financial cablegram
snyn : "The stock ninikels opened strong today
on the decision of the French Chamber to sup
port the > powers. Consols alone were 112 % buy

lowing on Kreiich selling and reports that Greek
troops had crossed the frontier. Inasmuch at
the selling of foreigners was the Greek contin
gent , tluro may be truth In the reports. Amcr.

t'entral Pacific Fold on Amsterdam account. The
financial preps Is becoming bullish on Americans.
Thn general public , however. Is absent from all
the markets. There was rcmi * talk heic today
of France taking gold from New York. It np

CATTLE Today's receipts of cattle were
not riulte fo large ns yesterday , and thu
total offerings nt nil the markets were fnr
from liberal , a condition decidedly favora-
hlo to the selling Interests. At the same
time , n good demand developed , which ren
dered the market strong and active on all
kinds.
The fivt cattle were In demand at iprlccs
that ranged all the way from strong to
WTlOc hlg'.ier ' for the more desirable grades.
While there was nothing very good In the
yards there were a few cattle good enough
to bring J4.40. The market ' -.vas active as wcl :
as strong , and ItMVas'not long before every ,
thing nt all desirable had changed hands.
The market on butchers' stock was also
In a very satisfactory condition , value *
being strong anil the movement active.
Offerings were very , mode-ate and buyers
were not long In clearing the yards.
Stockers and feeders sold about the same
as yestcrd.iy , the .market being reasonably
active at Just about steady prices. Repre

OMAHA , March 15. To the Editor of
The Bee : In tie ! etinday Ii o Is a letter by
one who does not deign to d.scloe ! his Iden
tity to the public except as "A Wheelman , "
but whose style , figures and stalenvents are
easily dlscenmblo to those acquainted with
the clrcnins'.anccK. The letter Is upon the
subject of tbfi propo.3jd bicycle lamp ordi
nance , championed by John 1'arWi , an attor
ney of this city , criticising the letter of
John D. Howe , president of the Tourists
Wheel club , one of the largest and most
popular wheel clubs In the city , and tbe
secretary of Uie Associated Cycling clubs of
Omaha.
J desire to say that the position taken by
Mr. Howe In his letter published In The Dee
a few days ago , expresses the sentiment of
all organized wheelmen In the city of Omaha
and by far the larger portion of the unor
ganized wheelmen , or those belonging to no
club. That "A Wheelman" has psrsonal
motives In thu matter of procuring the or-
dlnauce to compel wheelmen to carry lam ; > 3
after S o'clock p , m. , cannot bo doubted by
those acquainted with the clrcumstanecn. And '
when such proposal ordinance comes before
the city council for final action. If It docs ,
the organlxed wheelmen of this city will be
represented la opposition to such ordinance.
Every 1 wheel club In this city a over
whelmingly voted against andi proposed (
ordinance antl the sentiments of all unorgan
ized wheelmen who hove -thought on the
subject are against such ordinance for the
following reasons :
1. The blr > clc lamp do3s not give Balls-
faction. Tlio Jar of the wheel In crossing
street car tiarlis or slight obstructions In the
road , or passing over rough placra In tlio ,
road will jar out the light , anil such lamp i ' !
cannot b * kept lighted on a wlnily night "
or when the rider desires to ride with any * j :
moderate tpeed. "
2. The lamp Is not needed where the
streets arc well lighted by electric UghU
or street lamps.
3 , Aa a rule , after a llttlo use they become
illrty , oily and leak , and give InstlfllcleiH
light.
4 , Many nonresidents and visitors coming
to this city bring their whcoJa In order to
take a run about the city and very often do
jot return tn tlinlr hotels or boarding houses
.mill after S o'clock , and It Is not customary
o carry a lamp when traveling , It being
general miUance.
5 , All of our organized wheel clubs go on
lub runs of from fifty to a hundred miles ,
nany of them not returning until after 8
j'clock p , nu , and under such
iroposoj ordinance would bo coin-
i
icllfd to carry a lamp for the
mtlro day and distance or chance being
irrcetcd aa soon as returning to tlio city
ImllH , If after S o'clock. This would prac-
Ically disorganize our century road cluba.
G , Nearly every city which has enacted
iuch propcae.d lamp ordinance has repsald
for the rearon that It Is a total failure. 8
7 , It Is a "curfew ordinance" practically
ircventliiK riding a wheel after 8 p. in.
8 , It would bo Impracticable for use by
ncssengr boys or In canes of transporting
noiages nn tioriny or windy nights or over
ough roads , , '
9 , Such proposed ordinance would be un-
onstltutlonal , against public policy , partial
nd void tirlcss applied to all vehicles and cl
onvoyances , for our courts have repaiteilly clpc
eclded that the blcyclo U a vehicle , and as pc
uch has all the privileged of any other
Of
