WHEAT CLOSES AT A ONE CEriT DECLINE

CHICAGO , March 8. Wheat wns almost
entirely dominated by the more paclllc
Kuropcnn political news nnd closed nt Ic
decline. Small world's shipments were
ngaln Indicated , but traders paid little at
tention to the fact. Corn wns surprisingly
Rtrong most of tlio session , but closed nt
unchanged figures. Oats closed a shade
lower nnd provisions closed nt declines
ranging from 2'c to 754c. I
Wheat opened wcnlt , transactions In May
being nt from tuftc to 7Bict or from % c
to He below the closing price of
Saturday. In the face of tlio confident pre
dictions that war , enveloping all Europe In
Its bloody folds , was Inevitable , tlio aspect
of affairs this morning was surprisingly
peaceful. English consols were up Seven-
sixteenths of 1 per cent since Saturday
nnd thill was the chief reason for the do-
cllno ut which wheat started , Before the
{ session had progressed very far there wns
nn unexpected nnd very material rise In
corn , which caused wheat to respond sym
pathetically. May getting to from 75'io to
7C , or to within " 40 of Saturday's closing
value. That was the highest point' It
touched , and then commenced a decline ,
which by 11:15 : o'clock had reduced the
price to 7lc. Statistically the news was
qtilto as bullish as any one had expected.
* l no decrease In the amount on ocean
p.-iHsago wan 1,000,000 bu. und the visible
supply decreased over 1,000,000 bu. The
world's shipments last week were again
Bunsatloimlly light , only 2,811,000 bu. ,
ngalnnt 2CG,000 ! bu. a week ago and G.Gil-
ooo bu. it year ago. The Kngllsh visible
decteased 773,000 bu. last week. Minneapolis
und Dultlth receipts were only 231 cars ,
against 3GO n week IIRO and 418 cars last
year. The falling off was attributed to
the severe storms In the northwest. To
thu early advance of 7-11 ! In consols was
added n further rise of 9-1G later In the
forenoon , making the day's gain 1 per cent.
The latter advance came In about the
natno time as Thoman's report of wheat
In farmers' hands , which was very bear
ish. It as thai combination of Thomnn
nnd Kutopean peace , but chilly the latter ,
which started Ihu price down after Its first
rally and kept It dragging to the end.
May got down to 74-ic ) about half an hour
from the close , but the taking of 147,006
bu. of wheat hero for shipment , with 25
boatloads at New York for export , caused
u reaction to from 75c to 7jc ! , , at which
the market closed. '
Corn started with , n rush , making n i < _ _
advance , while wheat wns hurrying In the
opposite direction. Shorts were active buy
ers on the poor Inspection and the un
favorable weather , and the market was
very lively for n tlmo. The continued
weakness of wheat had Its effect ultimately
tuid all the advance was lost. Clearances
were light , 320,000 bu. May opened % c
lower at 24'ic , advanced to 25V&C , and re
acted to 24c , where It closed.
There wns n good , lively trade In oats ,
the market Jogging along after corn. Karly
In the day there was a good short demand ,
und this , coupled with sympathy with
corn caused a good advance. Trade
dropped off later In the day and prices
followed corn to the downward path , clos
ing at n slight decline. May opened a
shade lower tit from 17dc to 17',4c , ad
vanced to ISc nnd reacted to from 17o to
17'/c , where It closed.
I'rovlHlons were fairly active. Prices
went up sharply after a substantially un
changed opening on the buying of a good
' line of pork. With this out of the way prices
declined as fast as they had advanced
The market was quiet but steady for the
rest of the session. At the close May pork
was about 7'e lower at $8.30 , May Inrd
Co lower nt $4.15 and May ribs about Cc
lower at $4.40.
Estimated receipts for Tuesday. Wheat ,
SO cars ; corn , 350 cars ; oats , 415 cars ; hogs ,
23,000 head.

NEW YOHK , March 8. The mt t notable
features of today's market was the sudden ac
tivity In the shares of the Tobacco company In
the last hour's trading. The stock had been In-
fluenccd by the depression existing In other
shares after the opening , nnd had fallen n point ,
but nbout delivery hour a heavy buying move
ment developed for the stock nnd It quickly
regained the low and more , rising 2T4 points to
77 4. The fraction wns lost In n reaction. There
was R report that the New Jersey suit to annul
the charter of the company had been decided In
the company's favor. A rumor originating nl
Albany was also In circulation that the forth
coming report of the legislative trust Investigat
ing committee did not contain anything that
would threaten harm to the companies. U wns
believed by some , also , that Inuldc Interests were
giving the shorts n. squeeze In return for some
successful efforts recently to depreciate the value
of the stock. There were 27,000 'shares dealt In ,
which was almost twice the number of nny other
one stock , The general conilltlonii all seemed
favorable for n buoyant market throughout. The
tone Imparted to the opening by the Ixmdon
market was distinctly favorable , Americans be
ing higher there , and there was buying for
London account here during the day. Louis
ville & Nashville , which has been notably depressed -
pressed recently , In sympathy with the 1-omlon
market , gained 114 per cent. New York Cen
tral continued Its strong showing on the state
ment of fr'cbruary grom earnings , which were
J301,4CO. the largest since 1652. Omaha nlso
was up 1V4 per cent. Them was n cessation of
the special activity In the Vnndcrbllt shares ,
however , which marked the dealings of last
week. The granger * showed strength nnd good
riulstlng power to the later depression In the
market , being aided by good commlFSlon house
buying , and by the report of an Increase In
the castbound freight tonnage. The depression
was brought nbout by the special weakness
shown by Manhattan. Much doubt was felt
ns to the nctlon to be taken by the directors at
their meeting tomorrow on the dividend rate.
The price dropped 2 i per cent to E-l',4 , und rallied
only feebly. New Jersey Central wa'i also sold
on the recent published statements of the earn
ings of Its subsidiary coal company. The price
fell oft S per cent. Sugar nlso manifested
signs of depression , due to doubts as to the
amount of protection which would be accorded
to refined uugar under the new tariff. There
was also n fall In the price of Sugar Itself.
The general list responded to the Influence of
there slocks , though not In nny marked degree.
New Jersey Central rallied In tlic afternoon Hi
per cent , carrying with It other coalers. The
proceedings during a part of the day were In
tensely dull , the fluctuations In values being
extremely narrow. The buying of Tobacco shaiu
Imparted strength to the whole market , BO that
the close was strong and sharp gains were
shown In the railway shares.
Dullness was the chief characteristic of the
bond market , but flrmnetu wns generally appar
ent on narrow fluctuations. Governments were
neglected , but generally llrm. Silver certificates
were dealt In nt slight concessions after long
neglect.
The Evening Post's London financial cable
gram snys : "Nothing Is doing In the stocl ;
markets pending Greece's definite reply to the
powem. nnd the course of prices merely rellects
local opinion on the situation. That this , at
the moment , Is favorable , may be gathered from
the rise of IH per cent In consols ami the mate
rial gains In all the leading securities. Turkish
securities were especially good. "Although , of
COUI-FC , politics are the theme of the hour , It
must not be uupposed that the markets bear even
the slightest fcmbloncc to a panld. llrlelly
put , London has made up Its mind that the
powers want peace , Germany Is supposed to be
the only power really wishing to apply Imme
diate nnd excessive coercion to Greece. Japan
continues In absorb nil the arrivals of gold other
than eovire'gni. Silver Is dcmcm Izad by Japan's
abandonment of the silver standard. llrazlls
were exceptionally Hat on unfavorable reports of
that country's finances , and on the further fall
In exchange. The Ilerlln market was steady.
The Paris bourse was better , the settlements hav
ing only forced one failure. "

the South Omaha exchange from enacting
rules calculated to operate to the disadvan

The restraining order was Issued upon the
representation of the attorney for tbe South

( lied a petition alleging that the defendants
have made a practice of endeavoring In every
way to harass and Injure the plaintiff by
filing false and malicious charges against It
with the South Omaha Live Stock exchange
and then circulating reports of these charges
being ( lied.
H was also- alleged that the exchange con
trols the entire live stock commission busi
ness In South Omaha and that It has already
adopted rules providing that no member of
the exchange shall buy fram any person or
firm not a mfmber of the exchange. It Is
alleged that this rule Is very strictly en
forced and that It Is now proposed to amend
these rules by enacting provisions to the
effect that the stockholders of any firm be
longing to the exchange must bo members
of the exchange. It la alleged on behalf of
the plaintiff that this rule would exclude the
plaintiff from membership In the exchange ,
as Its stockholders arc scattered over Iowa

and unreasonable for them to bo members of
the exchange ; ,
