There , bettor dcmnnd for most pioducts. on the wholo. with continuance of speculative buying In some , notably in wool , bccnuso of expected duties. Reports of probable need nbrond hnve helped speculation In wheat somewhat. It hns risen nbout 3 cents , though the prlcu Is Hill lower tlmn two weeks ago. Corn la a cent stronger , about the lirlce of two weeks ngn. Westciii re ceipts of wheat nrc still small. 1.S.9.S21 bushels. n I v t compensate largely. If not wholly , for any ile- crcnsa In wheat , amounting In the week ti > 2,7f,9.73l bushels ( suit ports not Included ) nsnlnst 1,104,390 last year , reckoning ! hnlf a bushel of corn for one bushel of wheat. The grain supply of other countries continues much larger tliati n yenr ago. Cotton Ims declined He , and with good reason , for although receipts from plnntH. tloni fall off , the decrease Is not greater than the decrease In consumption owing to stoppage of mlllii. As there Is comparatively little cot. ton available In the country , the niaiket Is very convenient for Fpeculutors to manipulate. \ \ hllo many of the mills have Flopped production or cotton goods for a time , the recent outlook Is on the whole unchanged and the demand for Roods does not Improve , while print cloths are tt shade lower. The mills accumulated stocks fai- st excess of the actual demand during most of the dullness and their enforced restriction nt this time Is merely paying a debt. The demand for wool has diminished , though only a little , and sales are quiet , n third more than the full consumption of all mills , It all weie at work , but I the speculative buying continues , and at th ? three chief m.tiltets In live weeks has cov ered 4C.21G.7CO pound ? , against 28,017,400 In Iho same Weeks of 1M2. Western holder * are too stiff for eastern pur chasers and the buying of domestic wool baa slackened. Although tonic more mills have gone Ititn operation the courpo of the market has not favored great activity , but It may be said that for goods of the higher class there Is a better demand than heretofore. While the demand for HcBsemcr pig has sus tained the recent advance to 110.75 per ton at IMttrburg and gray forge Is still quoted at } ! UO there , and there Is aim lefs cutting ot price. * to get more business In llnlslK'd products , the general range of prices still continues vcr > low. Them Is less evidence of eastern mills selling rails below J20 except for c.sport , rales of that character having been mnde nt J1S. Western makers arc said to be firm nt $21 per ton , but the demands of the most Important rail ways have been supplied for the present , the consumers of billets arc not In the market Just now , but with the somewhat larger product of pig Iron , It may be doubted whether , outside of rails , the demand for Ilnlnlied products cqu the capacity of the works. Failure * show but slight Increase over those of 1S96 or U 3 , and but little decrease compared with 1S9I. The feature of special Interest , Is the conservatism In trading Indicated by the liabil ities of trading failures In nearly every branch of business , contrasted with the slight Increase of liabilities of manufacturing failures. The undertone of firmness In the market today , nnd Its stubborn resistance to the rather discouraging tone re flected from ICurope were notable features. The day opened nlth n decline , duo to the alarm manifested on the London and continental bourses over the threatening at peel ot the Crotnn iiututlon , and to cnles for London account ot International shares. This decline waa soon checked , however , quite a strong buying move ment coming through commission houses , appar ently for Investment account. The natural dis position of the market seemed to be to rise and to wipe out the decline of yesterday , which Is attributed generally today to reaction and profit- taking. There wan , In fact , n general advance In prices which held for the greater pait of the day , but very few shares attained the level of yesterday morning before the decline. Much the same Influences contributed to the rise as early lu the \veek , the Vamlerbllts being In ex cellent demand. Nerf York Central especially was stronu. The shares rose Iti per cent to 93. Lake Shore gained 2J4 per cent , and Northwest ern and Omaha Hi per cent each. The highest- priced Investment stocks also tecovcrcd part of the loss of yesterday , Omaha preferred nnd Northwestern preferred , New Ha\en and Chicago cage & Alton gaining 1 to 2 per cent. The grangers also , and. In fact , the whole railway list , with few exceptions , Bhured In the advantage given to prices by the strong upward tendency of the Vandei bills , and rose strongly. Commis sion hoiwe orders extended over a wide range of shares , and gave variety of the market. Of the granger group , Hock Island showed an ad vance of l'l per cent ; Northwestern gaining an equal llgurc. Burlington rose 1 per cent , and rit. Paul ; J per cent , tiie latter In the face of heavy London celling. An estimated aggregate of sales for London account of 20,000 shares credited fully one-third of that amount to St. Paul. Louisville & Nashville was alyo heavily sold on London account , nnd showed less re sistance than St. Paul.nnd finally declined Hi per cent The Industrials showed strength and had apparently recoi-prcd , from the alarm over President MfcKlnleyV tiust utterances. Even the anthracite coal group dis played more strength tUaui of late. Tills en couraging profiess pfovfjnt8 was retarded about 1:30 : o'clock by a movement to take profits.
