tl l ground tor confidence that months which
were regarded by many In the money market
with fertous apprehension have passed without

of the country and of the treasury.
The breaking of bonds which hnve restricted
many branches of the Iron Industry hai been
followed by an enormous Increase In demnnd and
In orders booked and by the starling of many
woiks. Nothing Is settled yet about the prlc
of l.nke Erie for the coming season , but tome
expect for Mcsnhn the price of ISS. " , while others
exjiect a lower price. The rapid Increase In t.ie
coke output In the Connellsvllle region , which Is
now over 1CO.OOO tons , gives profited of moderate
cost for fuel , and the addition of Important
furnaces lo tlio producing capacity prevents a
large rise In Itessemer pit ? , which bad. neverthe

demand. Purchases of rails , estimated at 1,004 ,
000 tons within twt > weeks , whereas the produc
tion last year was 1,102,802 tons and the sales
said to be nnly yaW > tons , ensure employment
for the works far ahead , and eastern workH are
taking desirable contracts at IIS per ton. Hnrs
are unchansed , but orders for i JO cars by ono
railway , with numerous others. Increase the de

elevators nt Chicago. Important contracts for
export continue , and American makers undersell
foreigners In tlnplaUby 70c , and nro selling

charged by Importers a year ago.
Wlt.i less rniildlty. but yet steadily , olher

have started , not covered by the restriction as to
print cloth works , which Is carried out. In-
crcatlnef demand has also Btarled quite a number
of woolen mllla , Including many making dresi
goods and hosiery. The demand for men's
woolens Is also somewhat belter , especially for
heavy weights , nnd there are Improving sales of
better quantities. Hales of wool have bte i

the great establishments ale bellcvnd to have
supplied their possible wants for some months

South Ameilciin crossbred being the most Im
portant noted this week.
Wheat enjoyed a brief rise , then dropped over
3c. and closed 2isc lower for the week. Whllo
western receipts are 40 per cent smaller than

exports ( Hour Included ) In th same weeks luive

Transactions on the stock exchange this week
were absolutely professional , nnd the market
ha * been more than usually Irregular In Its ten
dencies. Large financial. Interests nre Inclined to
wait upon events , whlii1 the factors which In
fluenced Ihe smaller traders were of nn Uncer
tain nnd changeable character. The principal
Items were the Ctetrtn question and Its relation
to European money nnd security markets ,
and the revival of the Cuban dlscii'slon In Wiiih-
Ington. As tn the first nf these , the earliest de
velopments Indicated tthnt the powers would
probably Inlcrferc between Greece nml Turkey
and Him prevent n breach of the peace. This
checked anything like n pnnlc In the Iximlon
nnd continental markets , but the later Informa
tion concerning the lark of n dellnllc program
nn tlic part of the powers , nnd the reenlcllrnnt
attitude of' ( Ireece , pcems to be n wet blanket
on the entire European financial situation. Lon
don's Influence has , consequently , been n negative
one. At home the discussion of the Cuban situ *
ntlon In the senate , and Ihe rumors concerning
the attitude of the American consul general nt
Havana , ( lenernl Lee , together with the news
paper comments nnd rumors on Ihe subject , wcro
used with bearish effect , even If the slrect on
the whole displayed less susceptibility to such
dlslurblng Intluences. This , however , may be ac
counted for In a. largo degree by appreciation of
the fact that the advent of n new administra
tion nml the expiration of the old congress In
n. few days limits the probability of any seilous
action In the premises , It may be also mentioned
that the certainty of nn extra session of congress
immediately after March 4 , nt which revenue
measures will be agitated , has a tendency lo
limit the disposition to do anything , and It Is
tentlmcnlally , nt least , n bear factor.

NEW YORK , Feb. 20. In the last hour nnd a

off the lethargy that 'has been Its chnraclerUtlc
for many days past , and nwukcned to a lively
activity. In which the volume of trade was large
and the prices advanced sharply throughout the
list. The pardon by Spain of Julio Sutijiullly ,
tile American Citizen confined In Cuba , and the
consequent practical abandonment by the t'nlted
States senate of Its peremptory resolution , de

to the Associated press that King Ocorge of
Greece had Intimated hit Inlenllon lo conform to
the demands of the powers with regard to Crete
was also u contributory cause. The relief af
forded to the market by the icmoval of these Im
pending shadows on values seemed to let loose
a great deal of bullish sentiment , whlc.li . has
been latent In the minds of traders for some
lime past. The shorts were driven 'to cover and
prices went up with a rut.li on quite large trnns-

CATTMC Since Monday the receipts of
cattle have been very lltin-nl until today ,
when there was n big drop in the number
arriving due undoubtedly tothe fact that
the week Is nearly at an end. Almost
two-thirds of the c-attlo hero ' .vcre stockcrs
and feeders , a good many of them being
westerns.
The supply of beef stecrn was very monger ,
only ten to .twelve loads of corn-fed steers
being offered for sale , some of them pretty
decent cattle. The market waa Just about
steady with yesterday.
Cows nnd heifers wore also In very llpht
supply , and the trade wits soon over with ,
the cattle selling about like ycstorflay.
Quite a good many stockcrc and feeders
wcro on sale nnd the situation In that de
partment of the market was not so I'avor-
able to the selling Interests. The extreme
cold wcathor , combined with the fact that
It was the last of the week , and that oper
ators had quite a good many rattle on
hand , rendered the market slow and lower.
Huyers , too , wemed lo realize all of a sud
den that they have been paying pretty
stilt prices the way bepf catllo are selling
and they wanted to take off about lOc.
