CHICAGO , Tcb. S. Wheat , nflcr fluctuat
ing nil day ftt lc range , closed nt sub-
fllnnllally yesterday's flnnl figures. It sold
ixt ono time nt a ytc ndvnncc , but realizing
nenr the close carried prices down again.
Corn and oats were neglected , and closed
a shade lower , the weakness being more
marked In oats than In corn. Provisions
fwero weak nnd declined 2Hff * '
Wheat was subject at tlio opening to
much the name sort of Influences as It was
.Thursday morning , The Liverpool market
was rather disappointing , because the nd-
ivnnco was only U < 1 to begin with. Both
! Ncw York nnd Chicago houses doing an ex
port business reported that there had been
no foreign acceptances of wheat or corn
offers made to the United Kingdom and
continent yesterday. Northwestern re
ceipts wcro heavier , which was nn addi
tional disappointment to the bulls at the
etart , nnd still another disquieting circum
stance was the falling snow at the tlmo
of opening1. The opening price for May
. was from TSU TSUc , against ycsterday'o
closing prlco of 7ijic , with a sale or two
us low is 7Sic. It kept within the rongo
of " 5iiff75iic ! , for about an hour , and grad
ually Improved until It got to TG'tC. At the
latter point It made n. rapid spurt to Tfiftc.
' nnrt n sale or two nt 7G'/4c ' transpired during1
it ho confusion Incident to the quickness of
, "tho " rise. The strength was brought about
T > y the report of rains in the southwest ,
rwhlch wcro supposed to have carried oft
the snow protection and left the wheat
plant exposed to Injury from the cold wave ,
which Is said to bo approaching that ter
ritory. The later cables were also said to
bo better , and the clearances from the sea
board showed up generously , amounting to
480.000 bu. In wheat nnd flour. Coveilng In
this market of St. Louis shorts nnd the
strength of the St. Louis market were no
nmall factors In maintaining prices during
the morning' . Chicago received 17 carloads ,
ncnln.it 1.10 on the similar day of the pre
vious year. Minneapolis nnd Duliith re
ceipts wore 290 cars , compared with 191 last
week nnd ESI a year ago. After tha mar
ket had touched "fl'/fcc , a reaction to 7Cc took
i > lace. Thin .price was maintained for some
time , but during the closing hour the tame
closing cables , coupled with the realizing ,
which gradually assumed qultn generous
proportions , brought about a further reac ;
tlon to 75c. The closing price was
75-TiC.
A very small local business was done In
corn. The market was steady until the
close , when It yielded a trifle on account
of the'softness of wheat. Fluctuations for
the most part did not exceed l-10c , though
widening out late In the session. Atlantic
port exports amounted to 737.0CO bu. 'May '
opened a shndo lower nt 24H5T21V1C , sold
sparingly nt 24'/&c nnd 21c , closing at the
opening prices.
Oats was only active nt Intecyals , busi
ness for the most part being light nnd un
interesting. The market weakened slightly
with the other cereals. May opened a shada
lower nt 17'i17ic ' ? ' , sold to 17c , under
short covering , then weakened to
where It closed.
Provisions wcro heavy and prices again
lower. The chief feature was the extra
heaviness of lard , as compared with ribs ,
the former getting1 nt one period of the
session to lOc lower for Jlay than the same
delivery of ribs. Liquidation , esoeclal'.y by
outsiders , was' quite heavy during the
morning , but a little better feeling devel
oped near the close on covering by shorts.
At the close Slay pork was 1'Ac lower at
S7.&OfC7.53 ; Mny lard about 2Vsc lower at
? 3.77'A and Mny ribs r2'/c lower at S.1.S5.
Estimated receipts Saturday : Wheat , 23
cars ; corn , 702 cars ; oats , 300 cars ; hogs ,
18,000 head.

Improvement In Iron nnd
i Steel Manufacture.
NEW TOIIK , Feb. 5.-R. Q. Dun & Co.'s
Weekly Itovlew of Trade tomorrow will say :
No Important change In business appears , but
the number of manufacturing establishments
starting much exceeds the number of those stop
ping during the week , and to much that the
curtailment of working tlmo In many cotton
milk * does not lessen the aggregate productive
force or amount of wages paid. There Is a
distinct Increase In orders for woolen goods ,
some at some gain In the silk manufacture ,
n. waiting condition with one branch of boots and
shotu and Indications ot better things coming
In the Iron nnd steel manufacture. All symp
toms are favorable In the money market , Und a
large sale of securities In connection with the
Northern Pacific nnd Oregon Navigation Inter
ests to European purchasers will put off etlll
further the possibility of gold exports. It Is also
cheering evidence of confidence among Euro
pean Investors.
To many It Is the mo t perplexing feature of
current events that wheat does not rise much ,
though It has advanced 11 cents for the week.
Atlantic exports have been only 1,696,064 bu. ,
flour Included , against 1,903,456 bu , , for the same
week Inut year , while western receipts , have Iwen
only 1,488,170 bu. , against 2,600,407 bu. last year.
The condition of the market Is not explained
by any special confirmation , hut current prices
show that no great confidence Is felt lu the esti
mates of supplies available for the rest of the1
year.
Cotton fell to 7i. nfter the agreement to
close Fall Itlver and other print cloth works ,
but recovered the quotation or a week ago , 7.31 , .
without further news. Spinners takings have
been so small this year , those oC northern mills
nbout 400.000 less than In 1S94 , that the ad
mitted narrowness of demand tor goods has
at present considerable weight. Sales of wool
have been nmnllcr , than In other recent weeks
and yet arc far In excess ot the consumption of nil
mills for a week. It all were fully employed.
There has been only a slight stiffening In
prices , but more foreign wool will be taken ami
stored , It Is believed , If wcstein holders demand
higher prices. More Important than these In
dications Is n little better demand for heavy
weight goods , which ban led some of the binallrr
mills to buy wool more freely and thus enable
a number lo start operations.
Prices of HcEsnmer pig nnd grey forgo at
Plttsburg have slightly advanced with a much
more hopeful feeling , notwithstanding the com
parative narrowness of the demand for finished
products , nnd In plates and wire nnlto there
Is much more business with good prospects.
IllllctH are quoted nt $15,25 , with scarcely any
demand nt present , nnd rods at $21 , while No.
2 black sheets nre quoted at only 2 cents , He-
ports that 23,000 llu. of ftcel plato nnd sheet
bars have been exported to England nre only
Indications of the temporary excess of supply
over demand In this country , nnd arc not sup
posed to have realized any profits. Yet It
IH stated that prices or cast pipe ure from J2 to
$3 per ton lower nt New York than nt Scotch
works. Hnrs nre quoted at the lowcut price
ever known at Philadelphia , without much Im
provement In the demand , nml steel rails are
still Inactive nnd unchanged In price , the rail
roads waiting for a decline corresponding to the
fall In bllletis. Hut on the whole , the demand
for Iron nnd steel Is slowly gaining , nnd n
considerable proportion of the works Is fully
employed , though the gain Is not yet enough
for those who have taken large stocks of mate
rial or products on speculation.
Failures for the week have been 311 In the
United States , against 323 last year , nnd sixty-
three In Canada , againstsixtyseven last year.

Utitchcrs' stock was In very limited sup

In first hands sold before the close. The
cause of the WL-aknesn was apparently due
to the fact of Its being near the clobe of the

keeps the pens in brtd condition and makes
the cattle look ut their worst. Representa

SAN KnANCISCO , Feb. 5. That Mur
derer Frank Uutlcr , alias Richard Ashe , has
no claim to the title of Leo Wollcr was
shown today when Kdwln Klllott , an hitl-
niato friend ot Weller , visited the city
prison and said that Uullor bore not the
slightest resemblnnco to the dead captain.
Klllott Is engineer of the Australian steamer
Monowal. Captain 1'otcrl of the ship
Olive Bank also visited the prlrou this nTter-
noon , IdentlfyliiK Hutler us Ulchard Asho ,
who had shipped with him as an able sea
man In 1S03. The Australian detectives
now in the city to take Cutler bauh for trial
were Jubilant today over' an alleged confes
sion made by Duller to Detecllvo Conroy.
This , on Investigation , however , proved to
too nothing more than a suggestion ofa
possible future .confession. , Hutler Bald to
Conroy that at least two nien besides him
self had Intimate knowledge of Welter's
movements and mysterious death. He said
that although ho was really Innocent , thcso
two murderers had forced him to accept
part of the dead Wellcr'n belongings , after
ward found nmons Dutier's effects. Duller
told Conroy If the- police would aid him to
capture the two " alleged murderers of yv cl-
lor he ( Ilutlar ) would turn qurcn's evidence
against them when the case comes to 'trial.
The police are confident that Butler' will
make Important disclosures In a few days ,
believing that ho Is weakening under con
finement when confronted with the weight
ot evidence against him ,
