The demand was fair , and as offerings \\ero so light , the fcolitiK on the market was decidedly bU- ter , and really desirable beovcs sold n lit tle higher. One pretty fair load sold at JI.40. Cows and heifers sold just about steady , with Saturday , and the trade was soon over with. In the feeder division there was a little moro life than has been the case for a few days back. Speculators were pretty well sold out. nnd e/very one wanted a few cattle to begin the week on. About ten men uru on the AMUSEAIENTS. An audience which filled the Crclghtor thentcr from stage to uttermost gallery bench ; an audience which well-high Mis tered Its bare nnd kid-gloved hands In It ! demonstrative enthusiasm ; an audience which In size and quality and deep and thorough appreciation of what It enw nnil heard , has never been surpassed In Omnh.y Such an audience did honor last night to Lillian Nordlca , tlio prlma donna soprano who has the courage to sign hurdclt Amer ican ; to Sofia Scalchl , who comes nearer to being the Idol of nil American hearts tlun any contralto now living ; to their male associates In the present concert tour ; to Homer Moore , whoso efforts ma.lo tills event possible , and to the Omaha Musical society , under the auspices of whlcn the concert wns given. The most comj'lrle good feeling prevailed , caught by the singers from the audience or by the nud'ciirn ' from the singers , nnd passed about nnd In terchanged until stage and auditorium were one In pleasurable excitement. Surely never were singers more prodigal of their vocal treasures , and never were lls'eners more eager for a feast , the like of wlils'i ' "anil been long denied them. Mine. Nordlcn , In the four years that have passed since she was heard In Omaha , haa been steadily growing In artistic stature and In popular favor. Sincere and honest she has always been , nnd the ImpulblvoiiOfa which formerly distinguished her Is still n characteristic of her work. She docs not disdain enthusiasm , oven In a concert pro gram. Hut If she was not great before she may fairly clnlm greatness now. There Is n poise and self-command and authority which used not to be so evident , and which In her very entrance nnd attitude of walling for thu Instrumental Introduction prepares one for the exquisite vncnl display which follows. She has become n finished and brilliant dramatic singer , with n power that will not be gainsaid nnd a surcncss nnd firmness of touch such ns experience gives to genius like hers ; and thereto she adds a personality so sweet nnd gracious nnd womn'nly that the sight of her tills nnd satisfies tlio eye ns the car Is charmed by her golden voice. She was heard last night In a range of numbers calculated to try her versatility severely. Indued , the program , including nil the encores , showed n sur prising diversity of subjects. Mine. Xordlca herself dropped with all apparent case from the sonorous music of "St. Hrszobeth" which a locnl musician admiringly desig nated "nn unknown nrla from mi unknown opera by an unknown composer" to the soothing cadences of a lullaby by the alto gether admirable Mr. Luckstonc , and roae again without difficulty from the vocal cm- broldcrle.i of "Where the bee sucks" to the exacting solo part In the Wagner con certed number which closed the program. She was half a dozen times recalled after her first solo , nnd. slut sang ngnln thrice In response to the tumultuous applause which each song only augmented. First the tender cradle song Just mentioned , then the little mocking chansonette of love which she sans hero four years ago , and last of all "Where the bee sucks. " Besides these , she carried the soprano part In the "Ulgoletto" quartet and In the "Lohengrin" finale. In each she afforded greater pleasure. If possible , than la the others. And In leavli'g Omaha she has le'ft a city full of her frlcnda. who will follow her successes with exceeding Inter est and will hope that her return may not bo too long delayed. Mine. Scalchl's reception was not less cor dial than that extended to her companion. She too was many times recalled after each o [ her two solos , and she sang not quite as often no the people wanted her , or she might bo singing yet , but still n good many times. She sang the ever welcome Nobll Signer from "Les Huguenots , " and the " " " Remdiml" nnd "MIgnon" polonaise- and "Ah Gounod's "Mandollnata , " and "Annie Lau- ilo" In an Itallan-Scotch-Kngllsh altogether delightful : and she sans other things of which people did Hot know the names and did not-caie to know them so long as that noble voice , of which the velvet Is ever so little Impaired , would keep n singing them. Mr. Herthald , who is pleasantly remem bered from his connection with the brief season of Wagner opera which Walter Dam- rosch vouchsafed to Omaha last winter , sustained his excellent reputation as a tenor en this occasion. He was sadly harassed by the orchestra in his performance of the Prize Song from "Die Melsteralnger , " and thereafter wisely adhered to piano accom paniments and Mr. Luckstone. Mr. Dcmpsey , the baritone , made a decid edly favorable Impression , and will bo warmly welcomed on the occasion of his next appearance In Omaha. He sang with line effect Handel's superb "Honor and Arms , " and gave as nn encore rare Den Johnson's'rare old song "Drink to mo only with thine eyes. " He was perhaps less fortunate In his rendering of Mcphlstophelcs' diabolical serenade from "Knust " although his shortcomings were rather those of tern pcrament than of method. The veteran Jules Lumbard is always a favorite with On'aha audiences. He and Mrs. Ely were heartily applauded when they came on for tielr part In the "Lohengrlm1' number. The chorus showed marked lm provement over Itu very creditable work on former occasions , and the same may bo sali with even more emphasis of the orchestra which , asWc from Its unfortunate experience with Mr. licrthald , did quite effective serv ice throughout. The evening wns full of pleasant happen Ings , which tended to promote the general good feeling. A pretty Incident was the presentation of roses to Mine. Nordlca by little Eugenie Whltmore , nnd the gracious kiss with which the prlma donna rewarded the child. Another wns ho seizing Mr. Moore with one- hand nnd Mr. Lumbnrd by the other , nfter Ihu "Lohengrin" number nnd Impulilvely congratulating them. And ctlll another was the unfeigned delight of Mine. Scalchl at llio rapturous nature of her re peated recalls. Thu concert In all Its details and In Its entirety reflected great credit on Mr. Moore , on the Omaha .Musical society , nnd on the people of Omaha who patronized It so gen erously. It may well murk Iho beginning of a new era In the musical history of n town which hau not heretofore contribute : ! largely to that branch of the world's knowl edge. Thomas W.
