There has been far more activity dls plnyed In the local circles of the Anclen Order of United Workmen during the pan- week than la usually noticeable In the space of seven days. A great deal of this has had to do with the coming meeting of the grand ledge In thl * city next May. In the Ilrst place the big arrangement committee peniiincntly organized In the new Odd Fellows' temple on last Tucmlay even- Ing. This body has the entertainment or the delegates In charge. It Is composed o : representative from nil the subordlnnU lodges In this city and South Omahn. A goodly number of these were In attendance ; . The organization was effected by the election of D. M. Havurly ns chairman and H. E. Yocum as secretary. The committee practically laid out all Its plans for nrrnngomcnt nnd entertainment , although , of course , the details were not entered Into. The ground work , ao to speak , wns mapped out. The question of expense for entertainment nnd mcaca for raiding tin money from the membership of the camps wan dUctirscd among other things. Much of the work was parceled out among the com mltlres which were appointed. The second important meeting of the week occurred last Wednesday night , when the Post Master Workmen's nsooslatloii gathered together. There wcro some fifty of the members lu attendance. Grand Recorder George II. Harhcr of Grand Island was also present. The meeting decided to make some recommendations to the next grand lodge which are decidedly radical chnnges from the existing conditions. Among other things the report recommendo tin ) abolishment of all the standing com- mlttcca of the body. Under the present con stitution there nro n number In exlatcnec the meat Important of which nro the com mittee on law and that on finance. It Ic proposed to make the board of lrnstpr r substitute for the latter. Each member will bo placed under bonds and the body will be placed Insole charge of the financial Inter ests of the state Jurisdiction , Another proposed change that will be recommended Is the abolishment of the ofllce of the grand lecturer. Hta present duties , oi > defined by the constitution , will bo turned over to the grand master workman nod his deputies. All iheee changes arc In the Interest of economy. The grand lecturer is paid a salary ana expenses. The members of the alandlng committees are paid a per diem rate for the time they put In on work for the order , and they also receive mileage while engaged In this work. Ily lopping oft the expense thun entailed It Is bollovcJ that the cost of running the state Jurisdiction will bo considerably decreased , thus lessening the aesrcvimonts on the membership. The recommendations will bo presented to the grand lodge by the Past Grand Masters' as sociation. Monday of the past week waa the anni versary of the death of the founder of the order , John J. Upehurch , who died on Janu ary 18 , 1SS7. The day Is styled Memorial day In the calendar of the order throughout the United States. It Is not usually ob served In this section of the country except In n very quiet manner. Nevertheless uoniu of the lodges throughout the state held acrv- Iccij or affalm of tome kind In honor of thu day. In Omaha the c\cnt was alino.it unno ticed. Memorial day has In a sense been supplanted hero by Floral day , which Is ob served in the early summer. Still the lodges that held meetings on Monday night dll take notice of the day hy icplnclng hual- nc33 meetings with social sessions , Ono of these bodies wa/i Omaha lodge No. IS , which gave n delightful little card patty In Its rooms In the new Odd Fellows' temple. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by a considerable number. North Omaha , ledge No. 1C9 Is considering the advisability of removing Itu ledge head quarters from Wolf's hall Into the central portion of the city , possibly Into the now Odd Fellows' temple. It Is stated that the plan Is being advocated almost unanimously by the membership at the. lodge. Grand Hecorder George H. Harbor of Grand Island was In the city during the gre-ater part of last week , coming In on Monday nnd returning to his home on Fri day. He spent moat of his time with Dr. S. It , Patten of the grand ledge law com mittee , who U engaged at preset In revis ing some of the laws of the bed > .
