Low prices and light marketings of leadIng - Ing farm products , with u conacnucnt scare- Ity of money , Is , In brief , the situation In thn country nnil It Is this condition that KovcniH nlmoflt all local budlnc. opera tions. The situation In the country wns the ratno Inst week , anil. In fact , for sonio t\cckfi buck , so that no vciy cuncral clinnso cllhor for the better or worms wast to bo anticipated In merchandising opcrntlons , nnd none II.IH taken iMaeo. In n JobbliiK way goods arc moving art under the conditions fruely IIB could bo expected ditions noted above , but the chnnRo frot'i ono week to tlio next Is so small ns tc hardly merit special mention. It can be Hitld , however , with reasonable poslUvciiPSiJ thnt there Is a" more encouraging tone lo litisluess , duo to scvural causes whleh com bine to render the outlook for the future more promising than the past. liuslncss men appear to feel that the staple products of the west hnvo touched bottom and thnt surli changed as occur In the matter of values In the future must be on the side of the producer. They arc encouraged by the 'mail num ber of failures thnt have bcfii reported In the country tributary to Omahn during the past few months , ns Indicating Hint th'i bottom has been reached and that the worst SThpy nrc polntlnpr to the fact that the ' for the oai- f'Xeess oC muti'lmmllKi ! exports lender year 1KW ! over Imports reached $ . , . ! . > , - STl.Oftl , nn amount that wan never before readied In the history of the country. The volume of exports , JI.or.S7S.417 , wits the largest for any year except t.io fiscal year 1MK1. when thu amount wi slightly larger. The iargii excess of lmorts ; was brought nbout partly by the- fuel that the Imports decreased $121,113,111. In addition to the larg" merehtinillsi' i-xports the net exports of silver aggregated M3,7j7.Mi. Ucyond this the gold proOuctlon for IMG amounted to about W.WO.OOO. The government finances have Improved and fears arising from the out Mow of gold hnvi > subsided. , These arc norm1 of the reasons v.-.iy ' lni l- ness men In this section htivo cmnp tn be- lli-vo thnt by the time the spring season arrives the conditions governing tnule will bo greatly Improved , with the consequent result thnt business-will be of u much more satisfactory character. IN A UKTAIh WAY. The locnl retail trade of the city hai' been nothing to be juoud of ns n whole , though , some houses report having had n good business. The weather Ims been too mild to stimulate trade , us consumers have been able to do with the minimum of nil Itlnds of supplies. The chniigo to colder weather nt thp close of the week ought to hnvo u beneficial effect upon the consum ing demand nnd If , as Is now probable , the harvesting < of Ice can bo undertaken on n large rcnle , money will be much more plentiful ninnng the laboring classes nnd trade will receive n substantial benefit from thnt source. This Is the season of tlio yenr when the most of the retail .shoe houscfl hnvo their nnnnnl clearing sales nnd they have been able to report n very satisfactory buslnesr One thing thnt may be worthy of mention In connection with the shoe business I- that through this section the men's "razor toe" Is rapidly disappearing , giving plnce largely to the "bull dop. " There is sonir demand for full , round toes , plain or with box. Tlio dealers generally were quite friendly to the "razor" to ? nnd dislike tc sew It go , HP Itwns BO enslly fitted , or rather , made- the mutter of suiting thcli customers so much cnslcr. Instead of nr objection , length beei mo n point of merit nnd where they could not give u umtimer nay size 7 D they could please him just as wel\ with size 9 A. It li always easier f fit tlio eye than the fjot. . I ) claimed thnt the "bull dog" which In coming lute favor Is u much more comfortable cboi nnd some dealers express surprise that the public ever took lo ll\t "rxzor too. " Ii Indies' wear thp situation Is very different and the pointed tec Instead of gnlne out seems to have taken on a new le.isa of life. Thn slender polnled toe seems to hnvo n hold upon thn affections thnt it is a dull- cult matter for tiny other shape to tup- plant It. It.TOUGH TOUGH ON STORAGE MEN. The carrying of eggs In cold storaco has come to be nn Important business nnd one thnt has grown rapidly during the past few years' . The PCKS nrc placed In cold utorngo early In the summer before the weather hn.i become warm enough to de tract from the keeping qualities of the eggs nnd they nrc then held until the 'winter scarcity causes nn advance In the price of fresh stock. The cgps are. then taken out of storage nnd the best of them at least sold for fresh. Owing to the high prices nt which erg usually sell during the winter months very gratifying profits have In some years been obtained , which tins made thn storing of eggs a very attractive business. The past year , however , was not very satisfactory to the storage people. The season was mild nnd the supply of frcrh eggs from the country kept up remark- nhly well , so thnt thcto wns not that sharp advance In the price usual In most HI v sons , nor wns there such a stiff demand fo thn storage stock. Omnhn dealers who had ecgi" In storngn , profiting by thn experience of formir yours , sold out early In the season , nrcforrlng the certainty of a small profit to waiting for the uncertainty of the future. Some of them might have made more money had they held on n little longer , but they did much better than the storage people at Home other points , who did not get unloaded until the break came. WiLL INSIST ON MORE POLITICAL PLUMS CIllliuliiK < < > Hnvv S'ovonty TlvoiiHiuul VOICM In tinSlnto , Tlii1'Vet They lluve .Not Their S Intro of Honor * . The Gcrman-Anirrlcnn citizens of this etato are to be banded in an organization for mutual Interest and bcnelU , particularly In < i political way , although the body itaclf late to bo entirely non-partisan. This , at least , Is the hope of a band of Gorman-Americans of political prominence In this city , who lin\o started the movement. Some time ago , shortly after the now stale olllrcrs had been Inducted Into olllce , the Gorman-American Free Silver club came to the conclusion that German-Americans wcto not being given any of the political flic , and in consequence sent a committee to Lincoln. This committee consisted of Prof. Ilolse , a prominent worker for the silver camx > dur ing the paat campaign ; K.V. . Koctter , an active popullH of the First ward , and I'ctcr Klsasser. When the party arrived at Lincoln It found that everything had been doled nut except n few clerkships. The committee , made a report on the results of the trip to a meeting of the club , held lust Saturday night at Miller's linll , when there wan n big iit- tcmlancc. The report aroused considerable Indignation , and the result of tlic matter wna that the scheme to form an organization oC German-Americans , without regard to politics , but for cnch other'o betterment politically , wns sprung. The plan met with favor nnd It wns dccl.led to call a mas-a meeting of all German-Americans In the county for next Saturday night , January 30 , in the same place , to start the hall rolling , The following committee was appointed to draft a constitution and by-laws , which are. to be presented to the meeting for adoption : 1'rof. JIclcc , Herman Haven , . I'ctcr Illrk- haiiscr , RV. . Koctter , John llratnl , or. The primary object will be lo see that Gorman * Americans are given political recognition In proportion to their strength In the state. It la said thnt there are fully 70,000 Ger man-American voters In the Mute , and on thai basis it Is figured that the German- Americans ought to have every fourth gov ernor elected and other offices and appoint ments In proportion. The organization will bu used as a lever In state , county and city conventions of all parties to force the nom ination of German-Americans , and will also be used as a power to compel the adminis tration lo recognize the nationality In ap pointments. Members of the new order say that of the new state ofllccrs tlio Gorman-Americana liavo succeeded 'In practically getting noth ing. I'ctcr Hlrkhaufier was appointed n mem ber of the I'lro nnd Police Commission , but this Is lltllo consolation , as It Is considered , that tlio appointment was practically made by the retiring republicans and will never bo confirmed. The German-Americans hnvo fared as'111 In local and county offices , having been given only minor' positions. Tlio new order Is also to have a secondary duty to perform. This Is to see that only competent and honest Germnn-Anicrlenns are allowed to get Into olllce. This object will bo kept largely In view , because of the fact that somu Gorman-Americana who have held olllco In this city and county have not al ways turned out well. Thus the organization will not only endeavor to see thnt good Gor man-Americans get . 'Into olllce , but that baj ones arc kept out. The movement harj the approval of sonic of the most prominent Germans In the city. This has so cncoiitagcd the originators that their ambition is confined only by the limits of the Mate. As soon as the body Is started and the work can bo commenced an organizer will bo sent Into the cou.ttry to Interest tha German farmers In thn body. It Is raid that ultimately every German-American In the state will bo on the rolls. The body Is not to dabble In national politics at all. .Votliu : of Sale l > y Hri-i-lv of Ameri can l.iiaii mill TriiHt Company.
