UIUCAOO , Jan. C. Wheat today for the
first tlmo In months catno under thu con
trol of the bears. Short ncllcrs caused the
unloading of long wheat In largo quantities
nml the result was a very weak market
nnd ITic not loss for the day at the close.
Corn lost "ic , oats He , pork and ribs Ce
each and lard 2V4c ,
NWiU evened llrm at a trlllo better than
the previous day's closing prices , but soon
lost Its opening Improvement and some
thing more. The llrsl trades In the pit were
nt from S34c ! to 83o for May , as compared
with yesterday's closing price of ! ' 4c to
WSc , but there was a Hood of offerings at
that and In the llrst half hour's trading
the price dropped to Me. The opening
Htrcngth wan duo to the fact that llrst ca
bles 'Wore steady to firm , notwithstanding
our break yesterday. The export business
nt th m > alionrd was also on u liberal scale ,
o\er 400,000 bit. of spring wheat having been
taken at New York , and northwest receipts
were exceedingly light. Minneapolis re
ported only 100 cars and Duluth 20 , against
i totul of 227 last Wednesday and 402 on
the corresponding day last year. Chicago
receipts were also small , numbering but
thlrty-ycvcn cars , against seventy-nine InPt
j-cir. The report of the good condition of
wheat In thu ground was made much of by
the bears. Whether It was due to their
c-ft'ortH In tout direction or to something
rise the. market became extremely weak.
May Ilrst recovered from S2iJ83t : to MVic ,
helped by stronger second cables and re
ports of the almost complete failure of the
Argentine crop , but by 12 o'clock It was
llKMtlng at Ji2u to prevent a further drop
inul lu ten mlnutc more. It was being sold
freely at MKc. The decline was not a mat
ter of any fresh ne..vs of a bearish char-
nctcr. Prominent holders , however , dumped
largo quantities onto the market , and their
unanimity In this respect weakened prices
to stieh an extent that for a time tlieru.
rremcil no limit to the decline. Near Wo
closn of the session May bad sold down
to Sllic. New York reported thirty boat
loads taken for export today , which caused
n slightly better feeling. May closing at
81 lie.
Corn wiis slow until the end of the llrst
hour , but llnally wcakc-ncd on the slump
in wheat. Trade \vniv slow ni a rule and
the market without any special feature.
Atlantic port exports amounted to XiO.OOQ
bu. , which Included 210,000 bu. from New
Orleans. May opened n shade lower ill
8.V,4e to 2354c anil sold down slowly to 25'4c
to 2 , ' c. where It closed.
In oats business was unimportant during
the greater part of ttto session. The de
cline In wheat to some extent Inllucnccd n
dlmllar action hero and liberal selling by
prominent brokers also helped the decline.
There wan Fome long stuff disposed of and
n. decline of ' ,4c resulted. 'May ' opened un
changed at 19c , declined to lSc and
closed easy nt from IStic to 19c.
Provisions yielded a little In sympathy
with wheat nnd the liberal receipts of hogs
today and expected tomorrow. Trading
win very moderate , being confined almost
entirely to packers , nnd outside support
wan lacking. At the close May pork was
do lower tit J7.SO ; .May lard 5c lower at
13.93 and May ribs about Do lower at from
* 3C ! , to $3.8714.
Kstlmated receipts Thursday : Wheat , 15
rars ; corn , 93 cars ; oats , 110 cars ; hogs ,
