TTOfl OMAHA DAILY JVEk. JANUARY 8 , 1897. FESTIVITIES OF NEW YEAR Meeting of December nnd January Causes Much Social Activity , LAST WEEK THE GAYEST OF THE SEASON NtimcroiiN llrlllliint nml IIvrnlN Conlriliiilc to ( tic iiii > MI nf .Horli'tx Many Vi-ar'n The noddy col'inuis this week apeak for thcniBOlvw and tell a atory of continuous and unprecedented activity li social cir cles. The week has unquestionably estab lished a record as the gayest of the Reason , and It Is not expected that any period of nllnllnr extent which follows will surpass It In this regard. The old year , which has been In many ways a disappointment , was sent thundering down the ages probably without any very serious or heartfelt regrets. It was a leap year , but HO far as the results have been cnronlclcd It htis borne no un usual quantity of the fruit which leap years foster. It was a fair year to outward show , when It entered In , twelve months ago , robed In the garments of purity and Innocence ; yet It has brought narrow and loss to a very largo number of the bclngi who dwell upon the earth's surface. So It was prob ably dismissed gladly by incut of those who have struggled through It. The no v year arrives In much the name airy costume which decked Its predecessor In the early Btago referred to. It makes the name fair promises , and bides Its real pur poses with the same guileless Ingenuous ness. The bright sunshine which , coming after dajs of gloom , ushered In the first January day with a radiant omen of hap piness , did not long endure ; but thicker clouds than those which obscure the sky at present have broken away and revealed the earth once more to the eye of the sun. Wherefore there Is no reason to be wholly downcast. The social events of the week have been no numerous and many of them so Important that It Is dlfllcult to designate one as more conspicuous than another. Probably each , to the promotoro of It and the participants In It , seems of larger Import than any other. Notable occurrences were the Monday Night club party at the Mlllard , the exceptionally brilliant dancing party nt the Kountzo real- dnnce and the half dozen largo receptions which took place on or about New Year's ( lay. Ilcsldes UIMD there have been far more than the usual number of smaller , but cqi'ally pleasant , happenings which have contributed to a very solid week of pleas ure. .11 o nil n > Mwlil dull I'nrty. The third party of the Monday Night club , whjjh occurred at the Mlllard hotel last Monday evening , was one of the largest and most brllllanl events of the social season thus far , anil perhaps the bert attended of any of the dancca of the club. The occasion was pervaded by the true holiday spirit , and was altogether most enjoyable. The arrange ments as to reception , dancing and refresh ments were substantially those which have been found effective at Iho other parties. The cotillon , however , which concluded the evening's pleasure , was a feature which has not heretofore been employed nt the Monday Night club entertainments. Several novel and pretty figures were shown and the cotillon was led by Mc.isrs. Heth , 1'almcr , Wing I ) . Allen. Oulott and John Patrick A number of strikingly handsome toilets were displayed.
