TII33 OTSrAITA DAILY BEE : SUNDAY , JANUAUY 3 , 1897. 15
CONDITION OF OMAHA'S ' TRADE
Hidholiday Quiet Provaila in the Jobbing
District.
MONEY STILL SCARCE IN THE COUNTRY
Pnvnrnlilt > for a Hood llunl-
-NM In ( In- Local I.lvr Slock Mar-
lift Corn UoiuiiKMicliiK : to
aiov In the Country.
In the Joliblntj district operations the
past week titxvo bcim Inrsoly unilcr the
restrictive InllupncoM of tlio liolhlny BCII-
non , mid tlio market Ims been doclilcilly
irmvtlvo. liuyers us a rule do not vlall
the city during llio holiday BcaHon , but
remain nt homo to tnkc cnro of their
own trnilu , and If business Is nt nil good
they luivo too much to do to even wrlto
out orders. The force of salesmen on the
road la always small at this Hcason. mid
those who were out found their customers
moro Interested In their Rlock-tuklm ; op-
crullorm thnn In sccurlni ; further mippllea
of seasonable , good. * ) , or ordering nhead for
Hprlng.
Under such circumstances tlio jobbing
trndo of the city could hardly bo other-
wlso than dull , and the fact Hint such Is
usually the case at this HOIIBOII hns given
rl o to the almost universal custom of
settltu ; aside the last week In the year
lor slock taking.
Iteports Irom the country Indicate that
the holiday trade was of inoderato pro
portions , owing In a lar > ; o ili-Rreo to the
fact that money Is Htlll HPiircu , a condi
tion that Is likely to continue for sonio
llttlo time. Thus far the amount of new
corn that has Bono forward Is very small
niul the money of the stale Is very Innsely
tied up In that commodity.
A largo amount of money hns been
drained from the country by the heavy
buying of stock cattle to bo placed on
feed , ami , with considerable money Roln ; ;
out and not much reluming. It miKlit not
to lie a matter of surpvlHO that collec
tions an- backward and the country trade
none too brisk.
The retail trade of the city hns suffered
the past week from n continuation of the
mild , uprlnirllke weather , which has pre
vented the development or anything like
an active demand for cold weather woods.
In addition to being mild the v/wither the
past week has been so very disagreeable
overhead and underfoot on some days
that the number of shoppers on the street
lius been smaller than usual.
AT SOUTH OMAHA.
The close of the year brought out the
usual statistics bearing upon the live stock
business , showing that over a half million
cattle were received on the South Omaha
market during ISM , or JG5 head more than
during IS'J.'i. There was a considerable fall
ing elf as compared with every other year
filnco 1S.H.
The receipts of hogs were 1,216,2X0 , or
20.-I3I larger than for the previous year , but
anmller than every other year since 1SS7.
Sheep alone show a gain over all previous
yt-.irs , the Increase In that kind of stock
bring duo to the fact that the Stock Yards
company was never before 'In a position
to take care of the sheep that might como
hero.
1'LKNTY OF IIOC3S TO COMK.
The Impression appears to bo general
among stockmen and packers that this
month will witness largely Increased re
ceipts oC liofs , and that the arrivals will
bo still larger during February. Those ex
pectations would seem to bo based , to a
considerable extent , upon the results of
Investigations carried on In the country , as
well as upon the assumption that corn
makes hogs , and that sulllclcnt tlmo has
rlapsed Hlnce the growing of the corn
crop to bring a good many hogs to ma
turity.
The most of the hogs coining to market
nt this point are heavy ; In fact , many of
them too heavy to please the packers.
What few lightweights are arriving nro
mostly from sections where growers are
afraid of disease and prefer to market
their hogs while small rntlicr than take
the chances of holding thorn until matured.
Whllo It la conceded on every hand thnt
there arc a good many hogs to come , no
material decllno In values Is generally an
ticipated , the Increase In the foreign and
domestic demand for cured meats being
rolled upon to maintain prices.
The prospect as regards the cattle busi
ness , for the balance of the winter , can
hardly bo regarded as so very promising.
At the tlmo when the range cattle were
arriving freely money was so close that
many farmers were unublu to secure cat
tlo to place upon feed , and as money be-
rame easier the supply of cattle suitable for
feeding purposes became greatly dlniin-
Ithed. The result Is that there arc fewer
oattlo on feed In this section of country
than was usual prior to IS'JI. and many
of them have gone Into the feed lots so
late In the season that there Is not much
rhnnco that they will bo matured before
being forwarded to market.
GOOD HKKP GATTLK SCAIICE.
Everything would seem to point to a
Benrclly of choice beeves at the South
Omaha market and to an oversupply of In
ferior and Immature cattle.
The prices at which fat cattle am now
Belling are very satisfactory , mid the
farmers of Nebraska , who wore fortunate
In securing cattle to bo placed upon feed ,
are realizing peed prices fur their corn.
The scarcity of good cattle and the en
couraging outlook for foreign demand has
led many stockmen to anticipate a contlnu-
one < i of the present satisfactory prices.
That atockmcn have good reason for en-
couragemcnt over the foreign demand Is
apparent when It Is taken Into considera
tion that the exports of cattle for the ten
months ending with October were 330 OCO
head , or lOI.M'S head In excess of the exports
for the corresponding period of 1893. Dur
ing the same time there were exported ! ! > , -
ailat pound * of canned beef product. 2.- !
S2S.W7 pounds of fresh beef and 72,831,942
Iiouml.'i of pickled or united beef , heavy
gains over 1595 being shown In each case.
The development of the chilled beef ex
port trade presents many Interesting foa-
turcs and Is In many respects very similar
to that of llvo cattle. Allowing COO pounds
an the average weight per dressed carcass ,
the exports of dressed beef from this coun
try for the ten months would represent
S.S'SOli llvo cattle , which , added to thpua
exported alive , would jMvji a total of 721-
817 head , without taking into consideration
the shipments of canned and pickled meats.
A continuation of Mich heavy withdraw
als of cattle from this country could dardly
fall to exert n strong Influence upon the
market to the advantage of stock growers.
WIU. , FIGHT IJUTT15IUNE.
Two years ago the legislature of Ne
braska , acting under strong pressure from
the dairy Interests , and In Imitation of
other state ; * , passed an act providing ,
among other things , that no huttorlnc or
oleomargarine , colored In Imitation of but
ter , tthould I > B off.-reil for ale. The result
of this legislation was the driving out of
Inn-mess of the Nebraska , manufacturers of
Imitation butter , but It did not prevent
llui sain within the state of huttcrlne. col
ored to represent butter , as the dairymen
have since learned.
The butter men started out with a firm
determination to enforce mo law and n
committee was appointed for that purpose ,
but aside fiom obtaining legal opinions ,
vhlch pronounced tdo law constitutional ,
the committee bus accomplished practically
nothlnt ; .
( 'hlengo huttcrlne , colored contrary to
law , Is now being sold In quite a number of
mores In Omaha and the law Is to all In-
tenls and purposes a dead letter , so far
us thin city ! . < concerned. Dairymen , admit
that they have fulled to enforcu the not ,
which the legislature passed at their so
licitation , but the trouble appears to bo
that butter men do not feel dla. osed to
move Individually against linns that are
buyers of butter as well as butterlne.
It Is now proposed to ask the legislature
to IVIK.S an net creating a > > tatn dairy com-
mlxxloncr , the governor of the state to 1111
Biioli olllcc and administer It with the aid
of a deputy. It Is pointed out by these fa
voring such action that Wisconsin and
other dairy stales linvo such nn olllccr and
thnt It has proven of great advantage to
the dairy Interests of such states
Although many of the states , and nnion ?
them several that were very largo con-
Humcrs , have enacted laws Intended to pre
vent tin ) niunufncturo and t < ale of btitterlno
that Industry Is not dead by any means. It
has , however , been greatly crippled by t'.io
cenceless hostility of the producers of
butter ,

vnilctl the speculative markets today , and
all the lending articles closed higher than
they did Thursday. Wheat was the leader
both In strength and activity , Kio factors
being Argentine crop damage reports and
apprehension ns to the result of the cold
wave In the winter wheat belt. Wheat ad
vanced H' e , corn and oats about 'Ac each
and provisions from Bo to 124o. !
In wheat the early news was of a decid
edly bullish character , and the first session
of the year began In a way to rejoice the
hearts of speculators wishing higher prices.
The strength -was maintained to the end ,
the lowest price of the day being made
shortly after the opening , when liberal of
ferings by longs caused n Flight decline ,
which , however , was quickly recovered
from. One of the factors helping the mar
ket was the prediction of cold weather In
the winter wheat section. Another equally
strong factor was found In the news cabled
from Argentine which represented matters
there as steadily drifting from bad to
worse. The province of Santa Ke , which
usually exports 12.0HO.OOO bu. of wheat or
over , will not have , It Is claimed , 2.000000
bu. surplus this year. Tnat the Argentine
news was regarded In England as of the
most serious Importance may bo gathered
from the fact t'hnt although It was a holi
day there the grain men of Liverpool and
London sent buying orders to New York
and Chicago for May wheat. Opening quo
tations for May were from S3e to S3-Kc ,
as compared with Thursday's closing price
of S3Vic. After touching 83-isc the mnrket
went steadily upward until sr.o had been
i cached. It reacted from that to Sic and
closed strong at S2c. Northwestern re
ceipts , though small , had but llttlo Inllli-
enei on trading. Minneapolis and Duluth
reported 393 cars , or live less than last year.
Corn was quiet , but decidedly firmer , gov
erned chiefly by the buoyant feeling In
wheat. May opened about 3-ICc higher at
Z.VKc , sold between 2.V&C and Me , closing firm
nt from 2.VJIC to 25c.
Oats were quiet and firm , prices being
Vic better at the close than nt the finish
Thursday. May opened c higher at from
iac to llWfllOic , sold ut l T4c , and closed
at Ifl ic bid.
A good trade was done In provisions , and
whllo the majority of trades were In the
way of changing January forward to May ,
thiTo were also not a few straight buying
orders. At the clos < o May pork wns about
12'ic higher nt $7.)2Vi. ) May lard 5c higher
at Jl , and May ribs 7&c higher nt from
SI to J402U-
Kstlmatcd receipts for Monday : Wheat ,
43 cars ; corn , 400 cars ; oats , 339 cars ; hogs ,

CATTLE Today's receipts of cattle were
largo for a Saturday , making a total for the
week of S.521 head , as against 9,033 head for
the previous week. The most of the cattle
hero today were cornfcd steers , there being
very little In the way of feeders or butch
ers' stock.
The market on beef steers was decidedly
against the selling Interests InaFinuch as
values were fully lie lower and In extreme
cases liic lower. The decline at Chicago
and the expectation of large receipts the
coming week constituted the bear features
which Were responsible for the decline In
prices. S'lIesmtMi did not seem particularly
anxious to let go their holdings at the
prices bid and the trade In consequence v.as
slow and dull from start to finish. There
was not enough cow stuff to make much of
a test of the market , only seven or ultsht
loads all told , and that kind of cattle did
not experience much change in the matter
of values. Stockers and feeders were also
so scarce that their sale could hardly be
considered us making a market.
The beef cattle market of the past week
has experienced a wide range In values ,
but the demand has been more than equal
to the receipts at this point , so that the
yards have been krpt well cleared , and on
most days the trade was active.
The excessive receipts the first of the
week nt Chicago broke the market there 25
T40c , but the light run here prevented the
buyers from taking off more ili.in l. > ? (20c at
this point. The shutting off of the receipts ,
consequent upon such a large and sudden
decline In values , brought ntiout a reaction
and the market advanced from Tuesday on.
Uy Friday It was as litelt here as
It has been any time , but It dropped back
I0iat the close of the wtvk , as noted above.
Slockers and feeders have been In active
dcmnnd all the week and have sold at
strong prices , the supply being way short
of thu demand. Representative sales :
