CHICAGO. Ucc. 2-Whcnt today nd-

weak niul declined from Be to 7'.5c. '
Wheat was strong from the start. Open-
Jug flotations were from Wo to ' .Jo higher ,
pnrtiy because of the Liverpool opening adv -
v uicof 4il and partly bf.cnuso of the feelIng -
Ing that the worst of the local llnanclal
tt million were over. Opening transactions
for May were over a range of from R2V4o to
M'/ic. It soon begun to tralhcr additional
BtrcnstU and got as high as S2-Hc In about
un hour from the opening Various causes
contributed to this advance , not the least
of which were reports on the Husslan win
ter wheat crops , sho'-in.t a decrease of
to 000,000 bu. from List jnr'n figures. To
lend strength to such figures , IJoston and
other Atlantic ports reported large clear- '
imces. Later Liverpool quotations , how
ever , came ' , Jd lower for January nnd n
bank failure was reported from Min
neapolis and another from Iloanoko ,
Vn. , the effect of which upon the
wheat market was a temporary reaction to
K.'Hic It did not take long to recover from
its easier feeling and about noon It was
bringing S.T.jo. Closing cables bad In the
meantime been received , showing moderate
ndvnncos at Hcrlln and 1'arls and a recov
ery nt Liverpool of ' .id more than It had
lost. While Itradstuct's world's visible
Bupply showed the heavy decrease of 2.oj3-
000 bu. as compaii'd with 7,000 bu , decrease
on the corresponding week of the year be
fore , It was disappointing Inasmuch as an
oven heavier decrease had been looked for.
After dropping back , however , to 83c , the
Jlrst ImprcHplon regarding Uradstrectn was
soon corrected anil on the wave of buying
which followed , the price of May rose to
RSvJc. July was relatively stronger even
than May , as was HOCII in the narrowing
of an Increase per bushel In the spread.
Yosti'rday the discount of July from May
iva fi'tc ; today It was ; reduced to 4',4e per
bu. During the last hour thu volume of
trading Increased and the price gradually
rose to f4c under liberal covering by HlmrtH.
The pi Ice. was maintained to the end , the
closing for May being XITiic to S4e.
Corn was sustained lo some extent by the
strength of wheat , the damp weather
which Is Intcrfc'ilng with the movements
of grain being also given as a reason for
better prices. Tmdc. except during the last
few mlnutcH , when shorts made u small
Bcramblo to cover , was vciy 'inlet. May
opened unchaiiKcd at 257ic. and gradually
advanced to 2 , > ! 4c. closing firm at that
flgnie.
The market for oats was n dull one , with
prices conllncil to a nairow range. The
HunncRi In wheat caused a similar tone
here and at the close values showed a gain
of He to He over yesterday's final quota
tions. May opened > , j.c higher at 20c. sold

sellers nt that price. Atlantic port clear
ances were heavy , amounting to 2UOOO bu
1'rovlslons took little comfort from the
strength In wheat and corn. The hog mar
ket was weak and there was enough appar
ently to give a downward direction to the
products , the decline being aided by the
llbeial cclllni ; by packets. Late In the ses
sion the contlnuctl strength of wheat
caused a slight rally from the bottom. At

CATTLE Today's receipts of cattle were
the largest In some days , nut smaller than
a week ago by 1,000 head. The total for the
two days of the week Is 3,724. as against
S.Goj for the corresponding period of last
week.
Mean weather , mean cattle , and a mean
market for mean cattle was about the sum
and substance of the market on fnt cattle
today. The heavy fog made the cattle look
less attractive than they would other
wise , nnd a good many of thorn would not
have looked very desirable t-ven tinder the
most favorable conditions. Still there were
some pretty good cattle In the yards , a
few of them better than anything seen hero
In some days , but the half-fat or warmed
up cattle continue to make up the great
proportion of the receipts of beeves. The
market today was fairly active and fully
steady on the better grades of fat cattle ,
but on the poorer kinds It was slow , with
u downward tendency.
lUitchers' stock sold about where It did
yesterday , the market on desirable cows
and heifers being active nnd fully Htcndy.
Common stuff was a little slow , still the
twelve to sixteen loads on sale were mostly
all taken In good season.
Owing to the few stockers and feeders
arriving and the very fair demand from
the country the market on that kind of
cattle Is holding up well. The trade today
was active and the offerings from ready
buyers at prices that were fully steady ,
and In some cases possibly a little stronger
on the most desirable little cattle , llepro
scntatlvc sales :

RICHARD A. McCURDY , President ,
Who will pay that mortgage
on your home if you die before
It's lifted ?
A life insurance policy will
do it , and the cost to you is
only the annual premium paid
to the company. It is like pay
ing a little extra interest on
your mortgage to insure its re
lease if you die.
Security---
The resources of the Mutual
Life of New York exceed the

Chicago , Boston , Philadelphia ,
St. Louis , Cincinnati and Balti
more.
A duty delayed is & duty
shirked. Let a man convinced
of responsibility secure adequate
protection and at once.
