Sonic misguided bojs who attend the High school Indulged on Tuesday night In a bit of useless deviltry that deranged the entire school for the day. When school was called yesterday morning every book in the buildIng - Ing was found stacked up on the platform In the assembly room In confusion. There ere 340 pupils In the school and the. comple ment of books that each requires Is large , making n pile that covered the platform tea a depth of about ono foot. Investigation showed that the electric system of the buildIng - Ing had been tampered with In the hope of making It add to the general confusion. The main wires of the call bells had been tapped and attached to the piano In the assembly roam , with the purpose that when any of the. holla were touched the piano would sound a few discordant notes , and when the piano was played the movement of the keys would set all of the bells jangling. A larfje call bell had been removed from the wall and concealed In the piano. This plan , however , was a complete failure. Prof. Hayden evolved a plan which made It possible for a proper redistribution of the books during the day. Ilia arrangements for doing the work enabled it to bo completed before the au lon closed. ( Spe cial. ) The stockmen on the vast range ly ing between here and the Black Hills have been taking advantage of the mild weather during the past two or three weeks to round up their stock that had drifted south dur ing the neve-re November storms , and driven them back to the home ranges. Some dead cattle have been found , but the less among native range cattle was small , owing to the fact that they were fat and strong when the stormy weather Ret In. A number of "through cattle" ( cattle Just driven over the trail from the houth ) , were lest. More than 4,000 head of these cattle were brought up from the aoutli late In the fall. Slost of the dead cattle were found In drifts atid ravines , where they became Im prisoned In the snow and were unable to ex- trlcato themselves. The UT wagon has been working In what Is called the South Fork basin a detached fragment of the famous bad lands , In which Bad river has Its source. The entire basin Is Intersected bv n labyrinth of deep , narrow ravines and creeks , many of which drifted level full of snow and formed a veritable death trap for range cattle. The UT men report having ceen a great many carcarscs In these creeks , the back ? , heads , and In some Instances , only the tails of the animals appearing above the onow. At one point o XM..M steer was found Im prisoned In a narrow lane , about two feet wide by two rods long , between the snow bank and one side of the creek. H had euteu all the grass , weeds and bnisli within reach , and must sonn have died of starvation , If it had not been discovered by thecowboys. . No ono has yet explored the country along the edge of the Bad Landa proper , but a good many cattle must ' .havo drifted over the wall and perished' . The well referred to Is a precipice200 feet high , that cxtcndrf In an Irregular line for nearly 100 inlleo parallel with 'Whlto river , and forming the northern and eaptern boundary of the Bad Lands. On the upper side of the wall and extending to the edge of the precipice 10 the prairie. On the lower arc the canyons yens and basins of the Bad Lands. During the winter season the snow drifts far out over tlio ragged edge of the precipice , and In a blizzard the cattlo. blinded by snow and stung almost to madnccs by the piercing wind , rush out upon the crust until they are suddenly precipitated with a miniature avalanche Into the depths below. While Frank Slocuin and Sim Reber , two Noivlln county cowboys , were * searching for the body of William Lewis , the stock man who was lest In the storm on Thanks giving day , they dug a live sheep out of a snowdlrft , whcro It had been buried under four feet of < ? now for two weeks and one day.
