1 A ( f. TJIE O\rATTA DATTjY REE : SATURDAY , DECEMBER 19. 1800. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL "Wheat tin Only Article on the Speculative List Showing Activity , CABLES HAVE QUITE A BEARISH TONE Corn Ilvlrcinrlj Hull All ln > ' , ( In1,11 - llc lltinliu-KN lloliiK HdiiK 111 Mniiill l.iilx iinil ( Mildly of n Hen I pi UKatttrc. . Dee. IS. Wheat was the only nrllrlron the speculative list that showed liny nellvlly lodny. It closed with a " 4c de- jmrtly caused by the weak foreign MIS iiiul partly through sympathy with the Mump In Wall street. Corn nnd oats de clined about He ench , and provisions closed unchanged to Be lower. In wheat thn enrly Liverpool no-.vs re ceived a hcnrlMi Interpretation. There wns no change In price noted In the first cable from that point , which wits distinctly dis appointing to the bulls , although why It should be was a mystery , IIH this market wns weak on the curb hint night on the correc tion of the Newport News exports , which wore found to be only 140.000 pounds , or about .i ) barrels , Instead of 14(1,000 ( barrels , ns reported. This dlrntipolnlmvnt was shown In the opening quotations for May , whleli ranged from 7'J c to SOJ&e , ns compared - pared with yesterday's closing price of S0c ; nfter hovering around the best market for 11 time , the prlre began lo advance , nnd In the llrsl forty-live minutes trading had reiiehed S0r. The northwestern tecelpts were smaller tlinii ever , nnd reports from that territory were to the effect that nrrlv- nls are now nbout down to their nveragn during the winter. Mlunenpolls and Duluth reporled : : CI earn , as compared wtlh Mi cars lavt week and 72'J on the corresponding dny lust year. Chleago's showing wns equally- low -1.1 ears agnlnst IS last week and 1S1 last year. Shorts did considerable cover- Ing. bHng encouraged by a better tone lo laler rubles and lo n belief which was quite prevalent that the Liverpool opening had been manipulated by this side. The price had nmtiv tluctu.itluns between 7U > je and MV ) during the forenoon. A report that JllOinl.OflO had been engaged for exportallon was the eattso of thn drop to the last named llgure. The market came completely under Ihe spell of Ihe New York financial news nml ihe weak Hock market 111 the last hour. H had reeovered to NlViO from Its previous break to TUVir. but went down again with a flatter to 7 Xe about half an hour from the close. Crop damage reports were more numerous than br-fore. The crowd refused , however , to allow next yenr 8 crop to enter so early Into this ueason's campaign , and felt and neted like delermlncd bears. The jirlee rested at TflUe. , . , , C'orn was extremely dull all day , the lit tle business doing being In small lota nnd ohlelly of a realplng nature. Sympathy with wheat nnd thn colder weather with expee- tnllons of Increased receipts militated nrnlnst higher -prices , and caused the weak undertone which characterized the market. May opened Vfte lower nt 2.Yie. ! sold at 2.V/.P nnd di-ellued to from 25Uc to 2YJic. where It closed. Outs opened lower and after n momen tary display of strenglh sold oft still further uniler free offerings. Later under heavy buying principally by one broker the mar ket reeovered. Iltislness elsewhere was dull , Iltictiiatlons being conllned to n narrow range. May opened He lower at 20e , and advanced to 20'tc. then declined to from l'He ! ) lo 20i\ closing easy nt 2le. ( Provisions were affected by dullness In grain and a general disposition to postpone business until after the holidays. The of fering nnd orders to buy were both light. I'ork , however , was the only staple showIng - Ing any appreciable chnnjjn at the close. May pork closed Be lower to $7.S7HMay : lard unchanged , at from JI.OO to $ I.02'A ; .May ribs , unchanged at from Jl.ro to Jl.02'5. While the receipts wore considerably lighter than yesterday theie were almost as mum cattle on sale. Kor the five days this week the rccelpls foot up l" , . as against 13,1113 for the corresponding days of last week showing n slight tain In favor of lids week. The market has been In fairly satisfactory condition nil this week until today , when the situation wns changed for the worse In relation to killing cattle. The supply of drissed beef atccr was more liberal than on a good many days , though still small , nnd made up for Ihe most part of half fat and unfinished cattle , with not a single choice- load on sale , awing to thu break In the Chicago market values here were anywhere from weak to lOc lower , though talesmen who had Ihe more desirable kinds thought they reci-lved about steady prices. The market was slow as n result of the break , salesmen not being anxious to sell at the prices bid. and buyc'ls not seeming Inclined lo raise early bids. Hood cows and helfcrb wrre Just about Fteadv. but buyers srem to have come to the conclusion nil of a suduen that Ihe com mon and medium kinds have been selling wnv out of line as compared with steers , and also too high as compared with other markets. The result was n break of fully lOc on that kind of tulf. and In extreme cases salesmen reported It even worse than that. The trade In ronseiiuencc was flow and It was some tlmu before the twenty loads ot cows and heifers on sale were all disposed of. The market on stockcr * and feeders was In much better shape than the market on killing cattle. In fact good feeders. In the language of the yards , sold higher than a cat's back. The demand , ns already noted , lnu > been very active thlij week , and In ex cess of the receipts , which has kept prices right up In the top notch. The fact that some kinds of killing cattle were. Hilling lower did not deter the buyers of feeders from paying strong prices for .their kind of cattle , nnd the snioly was soon exhausted. Representative sales : NATIVKS. IIEKP STHint N'o. Av. IT.
