I Ak-Sar-Ben Castle , which was erstwhile
the Den , a ml which , still earlier , as the
Coliseum , underwent changing fortunes nml
housed many strange combinations of man
kind , was nhlazo with light last night aim
overflowing with life nnd activity , on the
occasion of the second annual charity circus
which tli ancient building has sheltered
within Its walls.
lOntcrlng through the broad east door ,
vvhero Ilia footsteps were forthwith beset by
the importunities of men and women whom
he would never suspect of touting for side-
blionsi , the vl.iltor at once became conscious
I thnt he was at a circus. There was the vast
oval arena , with two rings ami an ull-em-
braclng tuck , the whole sawdust-strewn ,
save for n clear space between the rings ,
reserved for feats which need no sawdust
for their successful accomplishment. There
was the encircling amphitheater , slowly till
ing with nn expectant crowd of spectators.
There , beycnd the drawbridge , and In the
in > storloiis regions of the dressing rooms ,
UITO to he seen squadrons of horses and
annlas of men , ready to swarm forth In
orderly fashion at the word of command.
Thei'o was the band , wearing the Seventh
Ward uniform , and waiting with more or
less Impatlenco to ntrlko up the entrance
march. There , disposed conveniently about ,
were the various booths of local charitable
liiHlltutlons , Irekgently called side shuns ,
wherein were offered to the curious eye all
manner of frcaka und diversions ami thliiRi
both prelty nnd strange , for a sight of which
tribute wns exacted In sweet charity's name.
There , diligently plying Ihelr useful calling ,
weio fair cappers for Iho charity booths ,
nud young men who sold at exorbitant
prices the perennial peanut and the lurid
lemonade of commerce. And there , most
marvelous of all. was the very nlr of the
circus that tlear. familiar , once-trlcd-al-
was-used almosphcro of menagerie uuil
fcpangles und a\vdu t rings , which creeps
Into adult nostrils and brings childhood biuk
I'gnln. Where this latter precious tom-
modPy was obtained Is not accurately
known. That It was so bounteously sup
plied 1 ? distinctly credltablg to the knights
of Ak-S.u-nen , who would room lo have left
nothing undone whlr-h would contribute to
the pleasures of the audience.
The progam ! was emphatically a good one.
The fnkcs wcro confined lo the Direct parade
and to Ihe opening march , In which moat
of them reappeared and then passed out of
hlght. There wcio none In the performance
proper , or nt least no moro than a fe\ , harm
less ones , which deceived nohod ) anil which
bcrvoit to diversify a serious and ambitious
entertainment. Tin ; display of local acrobatic
batic und athletic tnlent Is to jojd ; no to
call for very high praise , and the few Im
ported performcis nro among the most com
petent to he found In the country In their re
spective specialties. The array of fine horfie-
llcsh cannot bo equaled by any elrciu travel-
Ing. Thcro are some really excellent feats
of strength , F.OIIIU of the best uiulllbrlzmg
ever seen In Omahn , n lot of good tumbling
and bur woik , a phenomenal Irapc/o act and
BOIIIO vciy clovers-performing dogs. The per-
foimancc last night moved along rapidly and
harmoniously , and showed elllclent msuagr-
mwit on the part of Mr. 13. II. Sprague , the
master of ceremonies.
The second charity circus IK Intrinsically
