CHAMBERLAIN , S. D. , Dec. 8. ( Special. )
--Notwithstanding that mjrj than a week
has passed since the recent blizzard , re
ports of a reliable nature are Just be-
glnnlni ; to be received from remote portions
wist of the Missouri river , eighty or 10J
miles from railroad points or telegraph
stations. It haa Lccn believed that no
loss of lira resulted from the storm in
South Dakota , but the belated reports from
the remote sections referred to show that
six and possibly eight persons perished In
this state during or as the result of the
terrible Ktorm , which will for years be re
ferred to as one of the worst blizzards ever
experienced In Dakota.
An unknown man and boy" were frozen
to death on the llclle Fourcho river. They
went across to the north side of the stream
during tlio.Ktorm for a load of hay , lost their
bearings and perished. The bodies of two
men known as "Scatty" urd Bob Carson ,
who were employed by John D. Hale of
Tllford ca sheep herders , have been found
since the etorm. When caught In the
blizzard the men were on their way to
Halo's ranch on Hcd Owl creek with eighty
Iliad of sheep. They reached the Hello
Fourcho river before being overcome b/
the elements. T.vo white men became
bawlldcred within four miles of St. Mary's
mission , on. the Uosubud Indian reservation ,
and attempted to make camp. Doth arc
iiportcd to have succumbed to the storm.
Probably the greatest losers by the bliz
zard were the Lewis brothers , who owned
a flock of 8,000 tiheep In the western part
of Nowlln county. They not only loat
2,000 sheep , but William Lewis himself per
ished In the blizzard , and Dr. J. Kenldy ,
an employe , died the following Monday from
exposure during the storm. Tlio brothers
were living at a temporary ranch on Big
Plum creek , ono of tbo tributaries of Chey
enne river , and their ohcepljin two bunches ,
wcro about seven miles/ibtant. ) One of
them was In the care Ol\Jr. Kenldy and
Halph Waahbern , and tfco.'fither was looked
after by a German hcrtlfcr. The herders
lived In tents , and the'sUe/p were Kept at
nlsht in wire corrals , \vhleticouhl be moved

On the morning of th ? blizzard Wllllum
Lew-Is tried to mo\e the.Bfijfcp to the home
ranch , but they stampedeilrand piled up In
the pen , which had fo' Jo cut so they
could escape to the opfetif prarle. Lewis
followed them , and was jolnfil by Washbern ,
who had left Dr. Kcnldj lyJng In bed In the
tent seriously 111. After-securing a portion
of the sheep Washhcrn again hastened to
Lewis' assistance , but /hk } employer had
disappeared. Washbern , who had now
reached a point many in lien from the tent ,
only saved his own life by following a wagon
track , which took him ito a house wagon ,
which had been driven into a sheltered
bend of Buzzard creek by Its owner. All
nlfiht long Dr. Kenldy remained In the
tent with the blizzard howling through the
holes In the canvas and filling the Interior
with EIIOUA hardy Indian pony that was
picketed outside BO securely that It could
not get loose , was frozen to death. Kenldy
was found the next day , but died the fol
lowing Monday. Parties have been
searching for the body of Lewis , but thus
far bavo failed to find It.
