Ho was called Into the con ference and was given an opportunity testate state his views nnd the views of tlu > college faculty as a whole. Dr. Christy denied very strenuously the reports which have been current , to the effect that surgical opera tions were performed on patients nt the hospital purely as a matter of experiment and without being necessary. He said that the greatest euro had always been exercised and that the value of the operations as clinics depended In a great measure upon making clear the conditions under which an operation was necessary and when It was not necessary. Me also dwelt upon the point that under the present arrangement the pa tients were given the advantage of the very best professional treatment. The matter was argued at considerable length by the members of the hoard. .Mr. Jenkins laying particular stress upon the point that he claimed there Is now no re sponsible head to the medical force of the hospital. Ho urged that the county physi cian bo given full control of the sick de partment of the Institution and the medical staff bo placed under his direction , arguing that In that way there would be a head answerable to the county commissioners. Totals for tlio year show ix largo Increase In the receipts of hop ) iitul sheep nttil n slight decrease In o.Utlo receipts , the reason for this ttccrcatc being the scarcity of cattli' In Nebraska ami low P. The four great corn feeding states. Ne braska , Iowa , Kansas niul Ml.isinirl , of which this point U the center , all look to this market for supplies of feeding cattle , anvoll ns for a market for these sanu cattle ntter being llntshcil. Cattle for feeding pur poses are fnrnlsheil In unlimited nnnntlMrs . by the great western niul northwestern i ranges , which also furnish the killers with vast numbers of fat cattle In the fall. At present the capacity of the yards Is estimated at 620 ncres of cattle , 14.000 head : 375 cat's of hogs. 25.000 head ; IHly double decks of sheep. 12,000 head ; and llfty cars of horses. 1,000 head. Fully eighty acres nro no\\ covered with pens , barns , sheds and oilier buildings necessary for earning tin thn business , whllo fully twenty ncrcs ha\e bem r.iaded and are rapidly being coveted with pens and sheds. The whole Is sur rounded by a network of tracks and switches which are owned by the Stock Yards com pany. All of the stock , both coming In and out , as well as all of the slock yards and packing house supplies , are handled by the yard company's own locomotives and train crews. While the handling of cattle and hoga wag receiving so much attention the development of the sheep Industry was not overlooked , and the present year saw completed n sheep barn anil dipping plant which has Increased the sheep business fully 100 per cent and added a largo amount of territory to that already acquired. The bain accommodates 7,000 sheep , la a mammoth fireproof Btrnc- tnro covering 30.000 square feet , where , tin. dcr ono roof , are scales , sorting pens , complete - pleto feed station and everything necessary for the rapid transaction of business , the whole being paved with vltrllled brick and well lighted The dipping plant was erected In conformity with requirements of the United States Department of Agriculture and Is complete In all Its details. At a nominal coat the feeder can have his purchase made secure from disease and the success of this arrangement has been amply verified by the largo Increase In the Inquliy at this point from all over the eora belt for feeding stock , and by the large numbers of sheep of this description shipped In from the ranges of the vest. The supply of water for the use of both the j arils ami the packing houses IB fur nished from the city mains and Is alwa > s adequate. Kvcry pen Is supplied with trough and hydrant , so that under no circumstances Is stock at any time compelled to bo moved or go without. No charge whatever Is made for the use of the yards and one charge for weighing , usually called yardage , covers the whnlo cosl to the shipper , no matter how long his stock may remain ou the market , thu weighing charge being collected only after stock Is fold. If stock Is shipped on to some other markc the only expense Incurred hero Is for sue an amount of feed as may bo < ; lvcn to th stock by order of the owner. I-'ecdcr shipments during the year num bered 19ri,032 head , and of this number the states of Nebraska , Iowa , Kansas and Mis souri received the most of the feeders. The shortage of the cattle receipts for tin- year amounts to n little less than 32.00U , whereas the shortage from Nebrabka ami lown alone Is something llko 40,000 In com parison with 1805 , which shows that the re ceipts from competitive territory have In creased over previous years. The shortage In Nebraska and Iowa Is due to the prior crop of 1S9I ami the consequent fulling off In the number of young cattle. An increase of 153,489 hogs Is shown from Nebraska , which Is very satisfactory , and sheep show an increase of 33 per cent , the shipments coming largely from Wyoming , South Dakota ami Nevada. Whllo the sheep receipts show a marked Increase , the number slaughtered at this point Is Increased from 30 per cent of the receipts In 1895 to 55 per cent of the receipts this year. The records of feed cattle shipped out Into tlio state during the fall months , or during the tlmo range cattle are coming to this market , compare very favorably with the fall of 1S93 , which was the b it year In the history of the stock yards , the shipments being only 11.000 head less than In 189J This falling off this year la directly traceable to the stringency of the money market , which was caused by the uncertainty of the result of the presidential election. Had this not been the case , the feeder shipments would have exceeded those of all former years. I'll ! < ( Mulnr Train * 'I'llIen Off.
