CHIfAClO , Nov. SO. Wheat speculators liml nil kinds of statistics with which to * govern their actions today. It made n very llnciiiiitlnK market , with the bulls lltmlly In ascendancy , HID May option closing al tin uilvanci' of 'lie- Corn anil oats were wealf , 'Jc ' lower each. Provisions were ' ; 'and ailvancoil from 2'fcc ' to lOc. Kverylhlng favored high prices at thu opening of the wheat market today. The ' l.'lverpool rabies were higher , notwithstand ing the weak close here last wocU , and a Paris eabli- quoted that market exeltcd nnd luivaiiclng on the rold weather and bad crop jit aspects , and the world's shipments were til out 1"U,0.0 * bu. less than the week pie- vlous. Still another source of strength was the smallness of the domestic receipts at lending western cities. Chicago got only 17 earn , against fill n year ago. while Mlnne- upoMs and Uliluth reported only 405 car loads , compared with 770 a week ago and 1.M2 the corresponding day of the year bo lero. The combined effect of such news was that May wheat , which closed Satur day nt from MTic to Sic , ojx'ned at from SJc to ST > " r and maintained Itself substantially bitweeti those figures for over an hour. Then for various H-UHOIIS , chiefly having refi-reuce to local speculative conditions , the extra bullish feeling all oozed out and by 12 o'clock the prlee bad droiped to Sic. The chief reason of tile weakness was simply la-k of btiHlness. Outside support was al most entirely lacking , most of the trading In Ing of a local nature. The visible supply was somewhat of a disappointment , the do- en-use being only 1OIJ7U' ( ) hu. Instead of 1- r,0t.xx ( ( ) bu. decrease as hud been generally ex- JH ted. After the prlee had worked Irregu- uhirly down to Mi < 1 u revulsion of feeling occiirn d. The strength of the rloslng ca bles , the fact that the olllci.il returiiH of the world's shipments to Kuropc made them only 7,417(00 ( bu. for the week and an en- g.igi-mcnt of 101,1X0 Im. of wheat for Inimedl- uti- hike and mil Khlpment to Knghin.l all helped to turn prices upward. May advanced to Me and was bringing Mie : ! when the ses- ulnii closed. Corn was a small and uninteresting mar ket. Only once , and that Immedl.itely after tinoiH'iilng , did prices touch the cloning liolnt of Saturday. The rold weather was expected to Increase the receipts as well UP tingrading. . Pi Ices followed wheat on Its downward course , but failed to advance on 11n- later recovery. May opened unchanged lit 27'4e , sold a nlmde higher , declined to fiom 2'Rfic ' to SO e and closed weak at 2c. ( ! Oats opened firm with wheat and also under a good demand , hater pi Ices fell off find the market ruled very weak from then tip to the finish. lliiildatlon | of December mas the principal cans- ' for the decline and the break In wheat and corn also had a ma- tirlul effect. May started a shade higher at from 22'f.c ' to 22'ii' ' . sold between 223fc and 21-V , clo-lng at 21V. Provisions were strong at the opening nnd that feeling characterized most of the Ses- Hl Inn. The llrmness at the start was caused 1) ) > a mileb smaller run of hogs than ex- peeled and this was a sulllclcnt Incentive for n still further advance. There were a few westerns here , but more natives than on irlost days of late. The market , as a whole , was In very satisfactory condition and practically everything In the yards sold In good season. While the supply of beef cattle was not large , there wire both natives and west erns In the yards , some of the former being right good cattle. There was one bunch of cornfed steers good enough to bring $4.C5 , the best cattle and the best price In some days. Other bunches brought JI.15 , $1.40 and $1.60. While the market was not particularly active owing to the fact that salesmen were asking pretty stiff prices , the demand wan good and the cattli kept changing hands , a reasonably early clear ance being effected. The prices paid were strong as compared with last week's close. Not far from twenty loads of cows and lulfcrs were on sale. The market In butchers' stock was steady to strong , and the buyers cleared up the yards In reason ably good season. The supply of stoekers and feeders was not very large , which , taken in connection with the felling among operators that there ought to be a good country demand this week , Induced free buying. It is like pay ing a little extra interest on your mortgage to insure its re lease if you die , The resources of the Mutual Life of New York exceed the combined capital of all the na tional banks of New York City , Chicago , Boston , Philadelphia , St. Louis , Cincinnati and Balti more.
