TITR OMAHA DATLT BEE : SUNDAY , KOV EMBER , 22 , 1800. 15 V CONDITION OF OMAHA'S TRADE Very Fair Business Doing in tbo Local Job bing District , qOLLECTIONS SHOW VERY LITTLE CHANGE Some ( Irnln niul Mvr .Stuck Moving , but Rnllli ; ( Jo Into Country Itiitlicr Tliiui Conic Out XolirtiwIm'B Miiiniiintli Corn Crnp. Thrco weeks have passed since the battle of the ballots nnd what everyone hoped for lius happened. Huslness In all sections of the country has been undergoing u revival nnd It becomes moro nppnrent every tiny that at last the bottom htta been touched and the future course must bo upward , llcports from nil localities nro the same Improve ment Is the order of the day. Mills have been started and manufacturers and com mission merchants report large transfers of merchandise Into the possession of Jobbers and retailers , Consumers who have been without work und consccjucntly without the means to provide themselves with the barest ncces- ultles of llfo huvo found employment nnd ure nddlng to t"o general demand for merchandise of all kinds. As the consuming demand gradually recovers from the re sults of Incomes diminishes of cut off en tirely , thcro must be a steady expansion in the consuming demand , The vast sums of money that have been hoarded for longer or shorter periods are Keeking outlets , hut llnd some dllllculty In securing legitimate channels that will send The conditions prevailing In the country nt largo arc rcllucled In a prcnt degree in local business enterprises. HUflnesj alTalrs In Omaha's Jobbing dlstilct haVe looked better the past week , and cons derablo sietlvlty has been manifested on till sides. Almost without exception Jobbers report a very satisfactory movement of merchandise. The cold weather ha brought a fair measure of prosperity to the country retail trade unit the lln'ht stocks have been quickly broken , bringing In a lloud of "sorting up" orders to the Jobbers. The most of the orders nro small , but they make up In num ber what they lack In size. This s especially true of dry goods and boots and shoes. In the grocery department business In very good for November , nnd the members of the trade appear to ba highly pleased with their expnilenccs of the p.ist two or OB weeks. representatives of the boot d shoo business are on thu road solicit orders for s.rlnir. | and report a fair measure of success. The hardware trade In acasonnblo sptx-lultlea Is active. WITH TUB LOCAL , TIIADE. In local retail circles thu trade of the past week has been brisk. The coming of cold weather has developed a sharp demand for fill kinds of seasonable goods , nnd the volume of sales In clothing , dry poods , Hhoos. blankets , etc. , has been very large. Kvory retail house In Ihe city reports a brisk trade for the past six days , and most houses hnvo had about all the business that present forces of clerks could handle with comfort. Considerable grain and llvo stock Is mov ing forward to market and the money thus placed In circulation Is causing an easier leellng In the country. Just rtt present the country Is selling hogs nnd buying cattle. The hogs have been ted up to nbout their full weight and nro now being shipped to market , nnd cattle put In their places to continue the work of consuming the surplus corn. The demand for cattle for this purpose Is enormous , nnd It Is doubtful If ilie supply of cattle will hold out until nil those who want cattle are satlslled. Nebraska , In fact , Is a buyer Instead of a seller of cattle , and moro cnttlo are going Into the country than are coming out. This is duii to the fact that corn Is plenty and the prlco so low that It docs not pay to seJl it to the elevators. NISUUASKA.'S CORN CHOP. The latest government estimate of the corn crop supplies the data for closer llgures on the actual yield than has been possible heretofore. The nvorngo yield for the whole country Is placed nt 27,3 bushels per here , or one bushel greater than In 1S95 nnd 7i ( bushels be'tter than In 1S3I. Taking these figures as ' 'a bauls computations It is > .casy to dnternilno th * total production , which would bo 2,211,003,000.- . Last year tlio total .trop , qf the United States was 2,151,000,000 , which was the larg est on record tip to that date. Previous to ISM there were only two years , 18.X9 nnd 1831 , when the crop reached 2,000,000,000 bushels. A. noteworthy feature Is the occurrence of two such enormous crops together. The crop for the current ycnr fulls very little idiort of the combined crops of 1SD3 and 1MI , which will servo to give some Idea of thn enormous yield of 1S3U. The Importance of these two successive largo crops to the railroads and the general public , ns well ns to the farmer , can hardly ba exaggerated. This Is especially true In view of the fact that the general crop sltu- ntlon In the world nt large Is such as to render large crops In this country of a de cided advantage. The wheat crop of the world Is known to bo short , nnd some other crops in different countries nro also fulling Jwhlnd expectations. In Mexico Iho corn crop Is a complete failure , When It comes down to the Individual states , Nebraska stands out very promi nently , this stnto being credited with the largest yield of nny state In the union ex cepting only Iowa. Nebraska has suddenly stepped Into second place In the list , dis tancing such great corn producing states as Illinois , Kansas and Missouri , The ISM < crop In Nebraska Is placed at 21W.CKW.OOO it bushels , against 125.000.000 bushels last year > * ' - nnd 13,000.000 in IKH. It will bo noted that the crop this year Is largo enough to make up to n great extent for the moderate crop of last year and the failure of 1S91 , the average for the three years amounting to 14S,2J4SCI. 14S,2J4SCI.COMPARATIVE COMPARATIVE YIELDS. In some of the states there Is a wldo difference between the yield of 1S9C and 1S95 nnd the years Immediately preceding' . lawn , for example , produced this year 310- 000,000 bushels and In ISO. ) 293,000,000. ns against SI.000.000 In 1831. Kansas raised 223- OOJ.OOO bushels this year and 201,000,000 last year , against only -li.ono.COO bushels In issil. In the middle west , ns In Illinois , Indiana and Ohio , thu contrast between the different years' crops was also large. In only ono section of the country has there been anything approaching n short corn crop this year , and this Is In thu south west , especially In Texas. Last year the Texas crop was lOS.OOO.OOO bushels , but the estimate this year calls for only 2S,000,000. The following will show thu production of corn for 1836 , us Indicated by the govern ment reports , together with the yield of previous years : OMAHA ( ii\iu.u : < AI ConilKInn of Tmil nnd ( liiiitutlansj on Nluiilc n nil Kancy I'roiliiuo , EOOS-rresh gathered. 19c. New Jersey's portion being nn Almost complete fnllur . The loss In crop yield f lli altogether on New Jersey , which will have lss than half the amount secured last year. Tlio weit has secured n better crop than In UK. whlto Nenr England will this season furnish the bulk of the merchantable berries. Tbo condition of the cranberry crop In New Jersey has probably never been equaled In the lust twenty-live years. The quality of the fruit Is not ns good as Is often the case , many of the berries being quite green nnd under size. In New England the crop Is n good one , but not a large one , The Cape Cod faction did not suffer ns much as New Jertejr , through unfavor able weather , although tlio nrmy worm went over n good many ncrej In llarnitnble nnd other counties. Reports point to n yield In Wisconsin nnd Michigan of about 60,000 bushels. The ornnbcrry switlon In Wisconsin is confined ctilclly I * the neighborhood of llerlln , which grows til * bell nnd bugle variety. The northern spctlons , where t > p | | nnd cherry varli > tl. s were formerly grown In largo quantltlps. were turned over three years years ago , the vines dtMroyed , nnd tntru has been little recuperation s'nce. Home wild vines Brow quite n quantity tf berries and add u little to the merchantable crop. The quality of Wis consin bsrrles is unu trilly line. There lire one or two bogs of consllrald < * extent around Ht. Joseph , Mich. , yielding till * year nbout 2.rUO bushels , ngulnst 2.000 bushels last year. A few bprrlcs are raised near Michigan City. Ind. The market for Hie 1S93 crop Is still largely n prospective one. The small quantities already sold Imvp brought low prices. The news from India dur ing the week has had llttlu effect upon the grain markets , and the general Impression Is that the Insufllclent rain will not effect the crops , and that In any cuso It will not change the famine outlook , Huslness at the Baltic today opened weak and dull. The rain In India un settled the xvhcnt market. Corn nnd oats nlso mndo n little nil- van cc , ns did nlso pork , lard nnd ribs. A sudden Jump of > ic per bu. In the price of wheat during the course of the llrst ten minutes' trading was a great surprise. Two Items of the early news were so dlstlnutl } bearish that nn Immediate heavy dccllno would have scorned perfectly natural , nnd the crowd would have approved It. In stead of that , December , which closed yes terday nt from 75'sc ' to 75 c , did not sel lower at the opening than Tu'/ic ' , nnd In Ion minutes thereafter was up to 7C',4c. A dis patch from Bombay said that n good fain had fallen thcro nnd throughout that sec tion nnd that prices of grain were rapid ! } falling. Further details of the rain In India from Allahabad describe the widespread urea succored by the rainfall and the pros pect of Its continuance nnd further exten sion. The effect of that news upon the J..lverpool wheat market was to c-auso n dccllno of Sd per cental , or about 2V c per bu. , below the closing price of the dn > before. Even with these depressing fea tures before them , the traders bought freely. John Ctldahy was a good buyer , and , as his trading always commands moro or less of n following , the buying was suf- llclently heavy to cause the advance. Hut thu offerings grew as the price Improved. Iloth the northwestern operators nnd for eigners were heavy sellers , nnd In the next hour nnd n half the prlco of December had dropped to 74 Ho , but there It rested. The expectation of n decrease In the visible supply being shown on Monday to have taken place this week , with a likelihood of a steady decrease for the remainder of the crop year , mndo the traders pause In their selling when December got down to thai point. It gradually recovered again , until It once 'more reached n , point , about % c higher than yesterday's closing price , or 75Tsc , where It closed. The. excellent New York bank statement was also Influential In the closing strength. Corn was fairly active nnd steady , keepIng - Ing within a narrow range until near the close , when It sold up , nnd closed % c bet ter than the close yesterday. The action of wheat was the controlling Influence. May opened a shade lower nt 20-lgU , sold between IGTio and 27c , closing steady at from 2fiTAc to 27c. Offerings of oats were light nnd n qulot session was passed. The market displayed a ilrm tone , nnd prices closed from % c to Vic higher than they did yesterday , mainly In sympathy with wheat. Hay opened un changed nt 21' , c and sold up to 21c , where It closed. Only a moderate business was done In provisions. The opening was at a slight advance on the better prices prevailing at the yards nnd the much lighter receipts of hogs. There were nbout SOO cattle on sale nnd they changed hands In good season and nt Batlsfaetory prices. Aside from n few odds nnd ends there were only two loads of native beef moors , which sold nt J4.1i > and J4.2 , " > , and ono loud of westerns at $3 on the market. The prices paid were strong tis compared with yester day. day.Thcro were about elKht loads of eowa and heifers on sale , which brought Ilrm- prices , the demand being good und the trade active- . Only n few BtoolT < RM < ! feeders were offered , and , as usual at tbo close of the week , the demand was n llttlo slack. At the panic time tin re was sulllclent Inquiry for cattle to clean tip the few on sale. The cattle market at the commencement of the week Just closed experienced a. re verse , owing to the. very heavy run In eastern markets , nnd killing eattlo of all kinds sold lower. During the latter part of thu week the tendency of values was up ward nnd a considerable proportion of the loss was recovered , though not nil. At this point prices on fat cattle held up well In comparison to other markets , owing to the extremely light receipts" . There have not been enough cattle here to keep the packIng - Ing bouses running nnd the packers have been forced to ship In a good many cattle from other markets. The demand for feeders wns good on every day of the past week and fully up to or In excess of the receipts. The coun try evidently wants cattle and Is willing to pay good prices for desirable feeders , but It begins lo look very much as If the supply would be Inadequate. Ueprcsentatlvo sales : NATIVES.
