Ho called at tention to the numerous publications besides the dallies , whoso fluid Is legitimate , und sUKKPsr.cd thai 1C advertisers would patron ize Hit-so and discourage fake mediums no one would receive a larger benefit than the advertiser himself. "Fake mediums ne\ci pay the advertiser , hogltlmnlo mediums do. And the advertiser who recognizes this lias taken one step toward a Huecesjtul buslnrsu career. Advertising Is u legitimate expense of ovcry liuelness and Is so considered by successful business men. Any business , no matter hoxv small , may bo advertised with profit. A small business must bo advertised In n small way ; n larger business proportion ately. A Kiniill photographer onee asked If I honestly believed his business could be advertised with paying resultu. Ho said his business was confined principally to that of tin-type pictures. 1 advised liln'i to try a two line wriit add for one month. I wrote the two lines , ho. placed them In n dally paper , and since then has been n regular advertiser and has repeatedly Informed me that his advertisements paid , and paid big. It Is true that the adver tising may not always have been done with printers' Ink but It has been done neverthe less. AnVKKTlPING AS AN AUT. "Advertising Is tx subject the limits of which are boundless , and nn nrt requiring constant study. Thu up-to-dalo doctor , law yer und architect Is constantly btudylng nnd Informing himsulf upon modern Ideas , that he may hold his position and Increase his patronage. If a merchant wore to become sick ho would not send for his archilecl lu preacrlbn for him ; If he desired lo erect a modern rcsidcnco he would not cull lu his physician for consultation ; If he wishes to advertise who shall he advisu with the fakir or the legitimate advertising man. who for years has given his profession his best tlmo and talents ? ' The Omaha merchants must stand lo- gelher or their time will bo fully occupied with fakirs , now that thu Transmlsslsslppl and International lOxposlilon will open a new field for them. Thu legitimate advertising man Is always welcomed by merchants und advertisers. His field being legitimate the ) extend him n cordiality unknown to thu fakir. Ills remaiks are weighed and given mature and deliberate consideration , llelng necessarily a gunlleman , the legitimate ad vertising man must command respect. " Thu speaker called especial attention to Iho advantages to be derived by advertisers from employing persons especially fitted to prepare their advertisements and see that the money was properly expended. In assuming tlio position of tonHtmastcr Mr. Iteldy expressed himself as gratified nt being a member of such n formidable organ ization , and thought there was every en couragement to the advertising men to keep together for mutual Improvement and ad vancement. WHICH PAYS Tim IH2TTKR ? The first toast of the evening , "Heading Notices against Display Advertising , " was responded to by K. A. Coombs , who Intro duced himself us a rank sucker , inasmuch as he had been induced to luke the place of U. Allbcrry , who had promised to keep out of the city , but whose presence he noted al the banquet board. The two powerful forces , "display advertising" and "reading notices , " were arrayed against each other , and the rtroi.g points of each brought out. The speaker , acting In the capacity of judge , said that , "taking it as a Kneral proposi tion , the advertising world regards both forces as being powerful auxiliaries to bus iness , the only question to bo decided be ing , which applies best lo various lines of business. Many shrewd advertisers use both display nnd reading advertising It. u systematic way , and find it pays them best. It Is my opinion , based upon the history of advertising made by thu business world , that both forces are of equal vuluo when properly applied. That Is , some commercial enterprises will reap greater results from J1UO worlh of reading notices than Ihuy could possibly from nn equal expenditure for display advertising. In other business the reverse would be true. "I hold that It Is thu duty and business of the advertising solicitor lo know which cliould bo used by his customer , "how much ho can afford to purchase , when to use It , and how to use It. It Is just as much his business to bo able to advise a merchant on the subject of advertising us It Is the business of n lawyer to give counsel to lil.i client. I also hold that no advertising so licitor can turn his back upon either read ing notices or display advertising , for in doing so ho Is lessening his resources , defy ing precedent and losing moucy for his cus tomer. That Is something the business world will not tolerate. " W. B. Hose responded to the toast "The Advertiser and the Solicitor. " The relation ship existing and that should exist between these two parties was dearly Indicated and many good suggestions offered that met with general approval on the part of those pres ent. ent.Dr. Dr. A. K. Dickinson of the Cudahy I'ack- Ing company talked on "How I Made Adver tising 1'ny. In speaking of the manufacturing Inter ests of the state and their association the speaker said : "Their experience in the tisn of all kinds of expedients has taught them that nothing short of newspaper advertising can stem the tide. It Is coming home to them , as Indeed It docs to all manufacturers , that any brand of Hour , syrup or cereal product tastes better to the consumer If seasoned with printer's Ink , and that n brand of soup , although capable of cleansing the foulest fabric without washboard or mangle , will remain on the grocer's ulielf until Gabriel toots his horn and the lly specks on the wrapper are as thick as thu rust on the scoop In his salt barrel unices Its merits reach the good housewife through the medium of her local newspaper.
