their failure to make the amount of bard

bad arranged to sell M0 or 1000 worth
of seats In the opera house and for weeks
bad been hawking the tickets about the
streets hunting for suckers willing to pay
1 for the privilege of seeing and hearing
the man tnlk for ten minutes Nwl
Ktandlng there was a large number of t ckct
sellers and that they all worked hard for
two weeks less than 100 patriots were found
willing to part with their dollars The
managers relied upon the general excitement
to carry the crowd to the opera house when
the time came for the speaking and they
were not altogether In despair on Saturday

with such a rush that ticket sellers and
ticket takers were swept aside as chaff Not
a dozen ticket wero sold after the curtain

CORNER STONE OF A NEW CHURCH LAID
Ilillllillilliill of St IoIiiin ntlKlUli
liitliernii Cliureli nt I lie- Corner of
Seventh mill Willow Avenue
li Now Completed
Tho corner stone of St Johns English
Lutheran church was laid yesterday after
noon with Impressive ceremonies Tho new
building at the corner of Seventh street
and Willow avenue has been finished up
to tho first Mory tho basement being of
stone A temporary floor was built tho
speakers addressing tho congregation from
tho north end where a platform had been
erected Several hundred peoplo were
gathered on Willow avenue and Seventh
street who could not be seated
The services opened with an anthem by
the choir followed -by an Invocation by
Itev T F Thlckstun After a short song
fcervice and a prayer by Hev Mr Oerhardt
of Lincoln Judge Hoed delivered an ad
dress on tho subject The Relation of the
Church and the State The main ad
dress of tho afternoon was made by Hev
S II Ilaniltz I I of Dos Moines on the
subject Christ tho True Foundation tak
ing for his text I Corinthians x l He
said In part
In many parts of the word of God the
figure of tho rock Is used as the emblem of
Christ It Is our purpose this afternoon
to set forth Christ as the true foundation
First lie Is a foundation rock It Is very
IniporUnt that the foundation of a building
be firm and durable for If It Is bad or
gives way the whole edifice Is in danger
Tho church of God Is compared to an edifice
It is called a temple a habitation of God
through tho spirit The founcfcitlon or rock
upon which thi3 church Is built Is Christ
Holy men and prophets and apostles are
all stones In this superstructure but Christ
alone Is the foundation bearing all Its mass
Ivo weight Ye are built upon the founda
tion of the prophets which Is Christ He
boid I lay in you for u foundation a stone
a tried stone a precious corner stone a
sure foundation This Is the stone that was
set at naught by the builders which has
become the chief head of the corner
Whether we consider the church of God In
Its militant state on earth or its triumphant
state In heaven Christ Is the basis of the
whole Each and all of Gods family spirit
ually rests wholly upon Christ as the founda
tion So strong Is It that most probably
myriads of worlds are upheld by It and
millions of living stones are built upon It
As n foundation It Is laid deep In the earth
As a corner stone it rises above the clouds
and catches the sunshine of Immortality
The ropk of ages binds the whole building
In heaven and earth together
HOCK OF HEFHESHMENT
Secondly Christ Is n rock of refresh
ment Prefigured by the smitten rock which
yielded water to the famishing Israelites
Christ is tho spiritual rock that followed
them The rock which Moses smote wn
in a dry and thirsty land The prophet
tells us that Christ shall be a root out of
tho dry land Tho rock In the wilderness
could yield no water until smitten by
Mosis Hut when struck by his magic wand
it burst into a fountain
So also with the Hock of Ages Christ
before His bosom was cleft availed nothing
as a sacrifice for sin but so soon cs his
body was stricken from hence flowed
streams that made glad the city of God
Whosoever drinketh of this water shall
not thirst It shall bo In him springing
up into everlasting life
Third Christ Is a rock of outlook
Standing on this stone we behold the di
vine glory and life and Immortality arc
brought to light And Moses said I be
seech yo show me thy glory and God an
swered Thou canst not seo my face for no
man shall seo my face and live Heboid
there Is a place by me Thou shalt stand
upon a rock and while my glory passes by
I will put theo In tho cleft of a rock and
I will cover thee with my hand as I pass
by Moses saw his glory and on descending
from Mount Sinai he was obliged to Veil
his face for fear of blinding his people
Ibo Christian standing upon the Hock of
Ages with open faco as In a glass beholds
tho glory of the Lord and he Is changed Into
tho same Image from glory to glory even
m by tho srlrit of God and wc behold Ills
glory tho glory as of tho only begotten
of tho Father full of grace and truth
ROCK OF SECURITY
Fourth Christ Is a rock of defense Of
all sources of security the rock seems to
yield the surest In times of danger the
peoplo of Palestine retired to them and
found refuge The Dcnjamlnltes felt them
selves safe In tho rock Hlmmon Sampson
kept garrison In the rock of Ethon David
was secure in the rock of Maon Engedl
Hut Christ Is the Christians rock of pro
tection and defense His foundation Is In
the holy mountains They that trust In
Christ shall he as Mount Zlon that cannot
he moved but abideth forever When
storms of trouble or distress arise when
the dark clouds of dispair gather round
then may the Christian hide In the cleft ot
tho rock and be need not fear
These are the associations clustering
around tho Hock of Ages
STAVD FIRM ON THE ROCK
Tho speaker then appealed to tho congre
gation saylrg Have you been led to this
rock and aro you sure your feet aro fixed
upon It Be steadfast Immovable Have
your feet slipped Retrace your steps or
by stumbling on this stone it may grind
you to powder Arc you a distressed one
Docs tho sigh of contrition heave in your
heart Do you say
Jesus lover of my soul
Let mo to Thy bosom fly
He can dry the tear of sorrow and com
press the sigh of contrition Uy faith stand
upon the bending rocks of Calvary See
your Savior dlo and may you feel the power
of Ills derth Go to Ills rocky tomb and
seo Him come forth and feel tho power of
His resutrectlon Go to rocky Olivet and
seo Him ascend and ascend with Him In
acts of faith desire and love By virtue of
His death resurrection and ascension may
wo all ascend
And when the Inst trumpet shall sound
through the skies
And the dead from the dust of the earth
shnll arise
With tho millions woll Join fnr ubovo
yonder sky
So tho dear Hock thnt la higher
thnn I
Tho laying cf tho corner stone was done
after the conclusion of this address Hev
G W Snyder pastor of tho church and
tho congregation Joined In responslvo read
ing while tho stono was being put in place
Irayor was offered and tho creed rrcl ed
In concert The corner stono has Inscrip
tions upon three sides On the east side
aro the words Womans First Icwa Me
morial This is significant of the fact that
the church Is being erected partly by a
1000 donation by the Womens Missionary
society of tho Lutheran church which was
started In Iowa in 1S75 Mrs G W Snyder
belns Its first president Slnco then the so
ciety has outgrown tho limits of the state
and belongs to tho general synod of the
United States Tho corporate name St
Jehus English Lutheran Church appears
on tho north side of tho 6tone and on the
west Is the name of the pastor the current
year and tho architects
Tho mementos placed In the tin box in
the stone consist of a vast assortment of
articles There was a copy of the bible pub

John Story the populist agitator who was
stabbed In the back during a fight at the
Diamond saloon on Saturday evening was
very anxious to leave the Womens Christian
Association hospital where he Is being cared
for and get back to his friends In Omaha
In this however he was thwarted by the
local police who have lodged a complaint
against nil of the men Implicated In the row
charging them with fighting and disturbing
the peace
Story was not resting very easy last night
but tho hospital physicians still say there
Is no probability of serious results from the
knlfo wound In his hack Story had been en
gaged as n fireman in the Omnha electric
light plant hut he was formerly n resident
of Iowa and Is well known to the Council
Bluffs police The latter credit him with be
ing a very tough citizen of the village bully
order who has figured In a number of barn
yard prlzo fights
Tho facts developed yesterday show that
Story was tho aggressor In the saloon fight
and had smashed tho faces of several of the
young colored men before tho latter com
bined forces and attacked blni Will Wash
ington one of tlio colored men received a
blow over tho bead from a stick carried by
Story and the proverbial thickness of the
African skull nlone prevented serious Injury
The police believe that Washington was the
man who did the stabbing Story received
two cuts one In the face oenoath the eye
that perforated the nasal bones and the
other In the back All of the negroes ar
rested were liberated with the exception of
uasmngion
Story mado two attempts to leave tho hos

In Omaha on Saturday will be unable to
play a return game with the Omaha team
unless It can be arranged to be played upon
some school day The team Is engaged to
play on every Saturday and holiday up to
tho first week In December and after that
It will probably to too cold to play It was
hoped that another game could bo arranged
for Thanksgiving but the boys are under
contract to play Red Oak on that date and
tho Hed Oak fellows have positively re
fused to forego the pleasure of a defeat
or even the postponement of it Tho Coun

Omaha fellows possibly can for tho Bluffs
boys havo an abiding conviction that they
can repeat the performance of last Satur

stand now each team has won a game The
first gamo played this season was won bv
Omaha with a score of C to 0 and Satur
days score of 12 to 0 leaves tho advantage
In favor of the Bluffs team Just enough to
make the members of the team enxious to
have another round with their natural
enemies The boys have a date with Grls

the game and give that date to Red Oak

Tho closo came tho Carlisle Indians gave
Harvard at Cambridge on Saturday was
the most noteworthy event that occurred
on the gridiron en Saturday With the
possible exception of the Chicago game
the match between tho red legged men of
Harvard and the real red men from Car
lisle Is tho only one deserving of more than
passing notice A mere glance nt the
score 4 to 0 would seem to Indicate that
tho Indians had hustled Harvard harder
than they had either Yale or Princeton
A peep Into tho play of the game how
ever Indicates that Harvard made a better
showing than did Yale and nearly as good
as that of Princeton It is true that Har
vards soro was considerably smaller than
cither Yales or Princetons but Harvard
scored its solitary touchdown within the
first seven minutes -of play and then
played a defensive game altogether It
was successful too and as a result the
Crimson Is the only team the Indians
have not scored on Yule wns scored on
twice though only one touchdown war al
lowed and Princeton was scored on once
It Is true Harvard did not run up much of
a score but the defensive Fchemu was prob
ably u tiso one The Indians gains were
neutralized by long punts every time while
the Harvard men holding themselves back
for Saturdays fcame with Princeton at
tempted few gulns through the line or
nround the ends The generous treatment
of the Indians by the ltirvnrd students
comer- as a welcome relief nftc r the grand
larceny by the Ynlenslans n week ago
All Interest now centers In the Hnrvnrd
Irlnceton game to be played on Saturday
Harvard did not show up strong on Satur
day though Its defensive work when the
Indians were within a few yards of the
crimson goal wns great foot ball Captain
Wrlghtlngton Is still kept out of the game
by a lame knee but with Dunlop Cozzens
Sullivan Brown and licnle the back Held
Is strong nnywny If the lino were ns good
Harvard would have a great team Prince
ton has been steadily Improving and Im
partial critics generally now regard It nr
the strongest eleven playing Its score
against Cornell 37 to 0 looks big when
compared with Harvards scoro against the
same team 13 4 Last year Cornell held
Princeton down to six points It did the
same In 91 In 2 Princeton cancelled Its
game In 93 the score wns 41 0 and in 91
It was 12 4 always In favor of Princeton
With one exception then this yonrY score
Is Princetons best against Cornell and It
Is significant thnt the exception was In the
year thnt Princeton defeated Yale Tie
Tigers are In splendid condition nnd their
hopes nro high for not only capturing the
Harvard game on Saturday but also the
Yale game two weeks later
Georse Dyers West Point cadets scored
against Yale on Saturday but then that
trick has become so common this reason
that It scarcely needs special mention On
Wednesday of last week the Elizabeth
Ahletlc club also scored oil the Klls If
such teams can score against Ynlc It will
be very strange indeed If the Jrrseymen
cannot do some scoring on November 21
Over In Chicago Halfback Nichols who
played so poorly against Northwestern
Jumped Into the game In the second half
nnd caved his team from n defeat by the
Inlvers ity of Illinois Billy Gardner of
this city fullback made one of the two
touchdowns for Chicago university and
kicked both goals Gordon Clarke at quar
terback also did good work Michigan had
no trouble In turning down Lehigh 41 0
The latter team Is winker than usual this
year while the former Is ns strong as ever
and could give some of tho jnlghller east
ern teams a good argument Nebrifka wns
scored on by Wesleyan which fact Is not at
all to the former teams credit Omaha
saw a good gamo -and may depend upon It
that tho third game between the Hlth

will be well worth the price -of admission

He said

American flag the stnrs nnd stripes tho

nnd of public law and order It symbolizes
to us the union of states not n confed

by the people of nil states a nation en
dowed not with nil powers but endowed
with specific powers nnd within the limit
of those powers supreme The stntes have
reserved certain powers those thnt relate
to local government your schools your

local rights Is essential But we must not
forget Hint that which gives us strength
nnd dignity that which gives us honor nnd
standing In national councils Is the union
of the states nnd that though citizens of
different states we nro the citizens of the
United Stntes and we revere and cherish
one flag Now It happens that In this cam
paign the question of the powers of the nn

consideration In 151 the southern stntes
declared that our constitution wns n com

surrender we had established a doctrine
nnd we will never npnln allow It to be dis

made under the constitution shall be en

my friends thnt Issue has been revived nnd
In the Chicago platform Interpreted bv the
event to which It refers we have again the
declaration that the nntlonnl powers can
not be exercised In n state unless the gov

PHILADELPHIA Nov L lrlvato letters
received In this city by Saturdays mall
from Havana throw light upon recent events
In the Island ot Cuba On letter In par
ticular gives late occurrences In Ilnar del
Hlo and gives a very hopeful view of the
present Cuban situation This letter says
that Antorlo Jtaceo has not attempted to
reach Havana province and that although
he made an attmk upon the city of
Artemlsa which was partially destroyed he
did not endeavor to force a passage of the
famous trocha On tho other hand It Is
stated In the communication which Is from
Captain Ho Oardo who recently was In this
city and who Is an officer of Oeneral Mnceos
stall that tho rebel army In Pliiar del Hlo
province Is not desirous of making war In
Havana and Mntanzas at this time lloth
of theso provinces arc comparatively low
and flat and tho effect of the copious ralnu
on the sol h still detrimental to the proper
handling ot an army The letter reads
To be with the Cuban army In IMnar de
Hlo docs not mean that one Is entirely cut
off from communication with the outside
world The mall system of the republic Is
not In operation In this province but the
carriers of our commanders reach Havana
as regularly as do trains In the Grand Cen
tral station of New York
ONE AMUSING INCIDENT
Among the accounts that furnished u
with the most amusement was that pub
lished In the Dlario de la Marina concern
ing an nttaci upon Artemlsa a few days ago
1 hear that the same account was sent to
the Unlto1 States and published as authentu
news Still after my visit to New York
Philadelphia and Washington I feel that
tho readers of American papers have learned
to discern the difference between Spanish
and Cuban news
At Artemlsa the light was well carried
on and some of our heavy guns were used
to splendid advantage We did not attempt
to pass the trocha for It was not a part
of General Maceos program Artemlsa was
quite strongly entrenched nnd over 4000
men were there garrisoned Maceo did not
attack with his entire force but desired U
give practice to the artillery The enemy
was amazed I am sure for during nearly
two hours time there was no response from
the town
General Marco personally directed thr
attack Wo retired In good order a baui
midnight after the artillery of the enemy
had shelled our position I do not know
the enemys loss but our killed nuniberco
eighty We left no dead on the field bin
carried all the bodies away Among the
killed was Major lerez whom you know
nnd who h13 been one of our best olilrern
Maceos force does not now amount to s
much cavalry but It has been Increased
over 2S00 since the arrival of the two e
pcdltlons
