There Is no denying the fuel that nome
Jobbers have been moving more energetic
ally tlurlnn the 4 > ast u' k tlmn for some
time pant , nt the name time the General
bUHlnuw * Huntlon Is one of wnltlni * until
the election Is over with. It Is quite I I
plain that such chttngos an hnve '
taken place. In the condition or i
business recently have been on the
nlde of Improvement , but an yet too
much Importance should not be attached
to this for the reason. Unit business Is
mm s mod I c , Tht-ru are days when the situa
tion looks very bright , while at other times
the pro. < pect is quite the reverse.
As the sinson advances there Is naturally
an IncicaMng demand for season goods
and trade from that source can hardly bo
ascribed to a better feeling In the country
or to any Improvement In Rcnernl condi
tions. The harvesting of the corn crop , the
repair of buildings designed to shelter stock
Ourlng the cold weather mid the many
other operations on the farm Incident to
the season nro bringing In n Hood of small
orders for certain lines , which swell the
total volume- business In n jobbing way
to quite respectable proportions.
As will bo Inferred from the abo\'C , the
demand Is largely for goods to supply cur
rent wants only and orders are mostly very
nmall. There Is no Inclination to nntlrlpntc
wants or lay In stocks with the expectation
that there will be a call for the goods a few
weeks later on. The retail dealers of the
Btato seem to feel that It Is the better
policy to wait until the goods are wanted
and then onler them.
The advances on some llnea of farm
products have created n much better feelIng -
Ing In the country , as evidenced by letters
from members of the retail trade through
out the state. There Is a feeling that after
nil the farmers will gel enough out of
their crops to pay up a good many old ac
counts and hnvo considerable left with
which to buy for current needs. In porno
sections of the state collections arc re
ported as showing Improvement due to
the money returning to farmers' hands from
the sale of grain and live stork. The'3ob-
bers of the city , however , do not see much
improvement In this respect and ore gcn-
ornlly reporting collections as very back
ward.
The greatest disturbing element with
which htislniss has to contend ! the po
litical contest now so nearly ended. When
this doubt In removed there ought to be-
nothing to cheek confidence and business In
n'l ' lln H ought to show n steadv Improve- '
rnent. People of nil rlii.-se * have- been
forced to practice economy In so many
ways And dealers have been so extra cau
tious In keeping stocks down to the lowest
possible limit that any plgns of n reaction
can linnlly fall to cnune an extraordinary
dc-mnml for all kinds of merchandls'e. .Man-
ufiictureil goods will no doubt come In for
their phare of the benefit and factories
that have been closed will ripd a call for
their products.

NR\V YORK. Oct. 21. The wheat market
ended the week ns U began It In a whirl of
cxcllement. Lat Monday the bulls pushed De
cember up to S ? ll-16c and today the bear *
Kround It down to 7c. . The break of from J
to I'jC today was based on an expected decline
of from 2fed to 2Hd In the Liverpool cables. As
ihe trade won prepare. ! fcr nn advance Instead
nf a break , the news fell like a bombshell and
quickly turned the market Into pandemonium.
The bulU were badly frlffhtcned. An prices fell
they caught large stop loss orders , which fur
ther weighted the market. After a brief rvfplte
the wholesale unloading was renewed again
near the clo < with redoubled vigor. Prices slid
down the scale from lie to HP at a clip , until
the titrpke of the gnu ? cut rhort the descent
The surprising fait In Liverpool was the sub
ject of much comment on 'change. J.atc pri
vate cables attribute It to heavy realising by
small holders. English hoUfes here wer sup
plied with rolling orders around the opening.
Lots of small long accounts were begun yes
terday. on the Idea lhat wheat had reached
bottom , but they all came out tnday. Transac
tions for the morning were 29J 000 bu. The
week past has broken the record for constanl
nnd violent fluctuations and dally sensations.
Honors have been about equally divided be
twcen bulls and be rs.

CHICAGO. Oct. 21. The wheat market
got hack Into the COs totlny under semi-
deniornllzntlon of holder.1' , who were non
plussed this morning nt Undine Liverpool
opcnlnR cnhlcs showing n decline of 2'iJ '
In the fnce of our ailvnnce yesterJny. The
market wns extremely nervous.nil ttirouph
the Hesslon , but with a steady downward
tendency. About the only support given
to prlees wns by holders of puts nnd the
few lucky ones who stood short over night.
December wheat nt one time showed n
loss of 4c from yesterday's close , but re
covered < c ntnr the end of nn advance at
Paris equal to from 2c to 3e per bushel.
Corn nnd oats were compnratlvoly flrm on
n bis caHh demand , showing declines at
the close of from Uc to He nnd 51c re
spectively. Provisions were firm , closing
about unchanged on hot ? receipts of 16,000
head nnd big cash transactions In prod
ucts.
The price prevailing nt the close of yes
terday's session was 73c for December
wheat. The first transactions this morn
ing were nt from 70Hc down to 70cA sale
or two In the confusion of the start wns
made nt O-c.and very little nt that mo
ment brought over TOe , but In the course
of the next half hour's business there wns
a gradual nilvnnco to 70"t < c. "Resides the
discouragement of the decline nt Liver
pool the heavy movement of spring wheat
In the northwest again held up Its hands
for recognition , nnd some eyes turned to
Its contemplation that had previously been
steadily looking In the direction of India ,
Australia and Africa , away over the mat
ters of more Immediate concern which were
dally occurring. Mlnneai > uils and Uuluth
reported receipts of l.OSS cars , compared
with EXi Saturday of the week before and
1.116 the corresponding day of last year.
The week's receipts at those places num
bered 7,519 carloads , agnlnst C.OC1 the pre
vious week nnd 7.S50 n year ago. The Ar
gentine shipments for the week ns olll-
clnlly reported wore double those of the
week b fore , but were still only M.OOQ bu.
New York n-norted that English houses
were free sellers of wheat there nt the
opening , but that numerous buying orders
from the continent were executed nt the
tame time. Very many vrell Informed men
thought the Liverpool decline wns cn-
jlneered from here by leading elevator In
terests to lessen the strain upon them for
-unreins on tVoIr hedges. December , after
holding steady for a time around 707'.c. de
clined rosulnr'.y to CPe. Then followed a
rally to COe. with n reaction to ( I"4e nt the
close on continental cables Indicating big
advances nt Paris , Hcrlln nnd Antwerp.
The corn market wns remarkably tlrm
conrlderlng the weakness in wheat- May
started at from 2r&a to 2 < ? < c , sold nt from
27So to 27tc. recovered to 2SVtc nnd closed
at that after numerous upj : nnd downs be
tween that price and 2S > c. TJie outward
movement of corn was Immense ; about
724.COO bu. were Bhlpprd from here In the
last twenty-four hours nnd 2.S27.000 bu.
from the seaboard to Europe for the week.
Oats , Ilkf cor.i , closed n shade lower , but
when compared with tlm weakness In
wheat were relatively llrm. A good de
mand existed for shortf. also from the
outside. The latter
part of the si-s-
slon was of a rather different nature
and prices fell off. but rallied again before
the close nnd showed but a email loss.
May opened at SlVfcc. sold up to 21 ic. went
oft to 21 ? c nnd was offered nt HJic nt
the close , showing a decline of , c since
yestwdny.
Provisions were not affected to any ex
tent by the market In the wheat pit. The
ofTerlnRs of tin. hoc products were nulto
inconsiderable and while no one bid for
much there wns no trouble In placing the
small offerings. The business ivas nota
ble for nothing but Its quicjt firmness. The
run of hogs was lfX head. January porK
opened at from X7.SO to J7.K ! . rose to J7.03
and closed as U did yesterday at J7.S7. Uinl
and ribs each pursued n similar course ,
closing In the end at the same price as
on the day before.
Estimated receipts for Monday are :
\\heat , 2Wcarsj corn , 9SD cars ; oats 403
cars ; hogs. 40,000 head.

In the way of killing cattle there were

Buyers seemed to want the cattle , nnd

The stoekers and feeders were slow , as

the fc-ollng wns easier.
