NEW TOIIK , Oct. 0. The volume ot busi
ness In Blocks today was llRbt , but the
dealings , nsldo from Sugar , were fnlrly well
distributed. The prices were Irregular. The
market was rntlior spirited In the fore
noon , nnd displayed considerable strengthen
on successive , reports of gold for Import ,
coincident with nn caplcr tendency In the
foreign exchange market , nnd a reduction
in ponied nnd sterling figures Of He , to | 4.S2
und Jl.SIVi by a leading drawer. Manipula
tion by Iho short Interests In various ) spe
cialties furnished the chief motive power.
In the late dealings a Hurry In call money
to 8 per cent and expectations of nn un
favorable bank statcme.nl tomorrow ro-
nultrd In a general material depression. The
closing wns weak , with most shares record-
Ins fractional net losses. There was lllllo
or no news bearing upon the , general sllua-
tlon , asldo from the facts nolci'i. The mar
ket opened quiet , but nrm , with values
showing only slight changes.
Sugar was depressed fractionally In con
nection with a further reduction In the
domestic refined grades of the product.
JliiiilinUtxn , oh the other hand , displayed
tlrtnncsrt , In contrast to several of the In
active snares. Sugar led the cntlra mar
ket. In extent of the trading , Jlpurlng for
Jioarly one-third of the entire dealings , but ,
nrJda from that slock , the railway shares
wore decidedly moro prominent llian Iho
Industrials. London was a moderate buyer.
The upward movement was chiefly based
upon the covering of shorts , nnd when the
4lemnnd was satisfied , Iho market settled
Inlo dullness. In Iho downward movement
the cxtru declines extended to 2V1 per cent
In Sugar and Manhattan , The bond market
displayed slrcnglh at the outset , but later
declined sharply- sympathy with the de
gression In the Bhnro market and the de
velopment of selling pressure ugnlnst Iho
Rending Issues.

The Evening 1'oat's Iondon financial cnble-
rrnin pays : The stock markets were dull to-
tiny , but nt the same tlm were rather lens
unsettled , nnd securities were more 'marketable.
Conroln were steady In spite of the gold ex
ports , because the government Is supporting the
market with purchaxcs. Amcrlennn were steady
nnd on the receipt of New York prices the
market cloned very good at the best. Mines
vera steadier on the Information tbnt a syndi
cate , said to bo headed by prominent financiers ,
wns to support the market. It Is believed here
that , while the gold exports to America may
be largely accounted for by natural causes , the
movement Is being much Increased by the hoardIng -
Ing In the United States , pending the result
of the election , In addition to the gold shipped
from here to America today a considerable
amount has gene from the Hank of England.
In 1'nrls the market was better and In Uerlln
