as large as were the receipts the nnrket wns In
very fnlr condition. The demniiil for alt kinds
of cattlewns good , nnd the trade fairly iectl\e

nnd delayed the weighing up of inn cattle Home-

The supply of fal steers suitable for the
lewed beef trade was very mcngcr. Out of the ;
1SI loads of cattle In the yards there were only
about fifteen hinds of f t steero , and they weie
wcFterns. There wns not a sliiRle- bunch of
choice beeves on Kale. The demand was good
em the part uf local packers and the few cattle
offered mid at fully Firmly prices.
while * the supply of butchers' stock wns larger
than on a good many ilnys. It was smnll In
comparison to tin- total receipts , only nbout
livenly-flve loads of oows nnd heifers being em
sale. The market wan without special feature-

Dr. Chaunccy M. Depew considers him
self about the luckiest man In New York.
Dame Fortune lias been Very kind to thp
popular railway president ever since lie first
opened his gray eyes in a little Hudson river
town , over half a century ago.
Dr. Dcpew drove down Hroadwny recently ,
says a New York dispatch , to deliver n
political speech at a noon meeting of trav
eling men. The address was described as
the effort of his life , and he left the hall
BinllinK as the cheers of hundreds of voices
echoed In his ears. The Bound was none
the less pleasant because It was not at all
new to him. He had frequently heard his
oratorical efforts applauded and It always
pleased him. The applause on this occa
sion was from n class of men whose Rood
wishes lr. Depew had labored to attain for
years. They were traveling men , and he
had told them how glad ho was to meet
them. Ho felt ho was one of them , ho said ,
because he was a story-teller , and then
lie took the audience into his confidence
und confessed that he cribbed all his best
yarns from the traveling men , dressed them
In a new garb and sprang them on an unsus
pecting public as his own. Ho even v.'cnt
further and said he frequently made long
trips , ostensibly for the purpose of Inspect
ing a road , but In reality to sit in the
smoker and catch Borne new stories from
drummers.
llcforc starting for the meeting Ir , Depew
md been examining some government bonds ,
There were over $10,000 worth. He Intendo ; !
leaving them with a broker , and thrust the
big envelope- which they snugly rested
Into one of the pockets of his light over-
: oat. He made two or three calls down
; own before hu visited the broker. As he
mtcrctl the lattcr's ofllco his countenance
uddenly changed. The- transformation of
ho mild Dr. Jckyll Into Mr. Hyde was not
i circumstance to the quick change In Mr.
Depew'u face. He had thrust his hand
nto his pocket and found the bonds gone.
"That's what I gft for going In bad com-
iany , " he Is alleged to have said to a
rlend.
Ten thousand dollars Is not much to a
nan of Dr. Dcpcw's wealth and tempera-
nent , but it was annoying. He did not
orgct the circumstance for a full hour ,
nd then It passed out of his mind , only to
10 brought back again by a dirty-faced
Ittlo urchin who stood on the curb stone
y the Grand Central depot awaiting Dr.
Jepew's return , The little fellow had a
ackage In bis hand which looked as If It
ad seen considerable handling , but It had
) r. Depew's handwriting on It. It con-
lined the missing bonds.
"I found dem on Broadway , In do gutter , "
liu urchin said , "and when I askrd a man
r'ot dey WRB be says dey belongs to do
icacli.1 Say , boss , you're known as dc
icaeh , ' ain't yrrV Wat's mo reward ? "
The urchin saw the Inside of a railway
resident's 6mce for the first tlmo that after-
COM. He was a welcome visitor , and dur-
ig his conversation told Dr. Depew of his
omo on the top floor , rear , of a Cherry
trect tenement. HU father was a long-
lioreman , but was now serving time , he
ild , "on de Island , for swatting me modder
Id de Ironing board. "
The amount of the reward will never be
nown , but It I : stated that the family no
mger lives In the Cherry street tenement ,
nd that Instead of peddling papers the boy
ow conducts a small chop c ? his own.
r. Depew will not talk of the matter. Ho
lys ho suffers from a defective memory
nd cannot recall all the circumstances of
10 Incident. His friends , however , talk
' It , and In ooimiiGiiUni ; on his good luck
ly that If he fell from the Brooklyn bridge
ito the Kast river he would probably rise
i the surface of the water with a new
itcnt car coupler In one hand and a preul-
'iitiul nomination In the other.
