It Is quite probable tiiat the postponement
of the Omaha Wheel club races from last
Saturday until Saturday of this week will
prove a good thing after all. It depends on
the weather entirely , for with a good day
there will be better racing than had been
expected. Not a Blnslolontiy ! ; has been with
drawn on account of the postponement , but
others havn como in , till the list of riders
is the largest over booked iti the state ,
being 130 up to last night. iGeorgo Krcamcr

PITTSDURG , Sept. 29. Notwithstanding
the Inclement weather , a goodly sized and
very enthusiastic audience greeted Joshua
Levering , the prohibition candidate , at Car
negie hall , Allegheny , tonight. Mr. LeverIng -
Ing said In part :
"As a political organization , the piohlbt-
tlon party has nothing to do with u man's
habits. Its whole relations to the liquor
traffic Is as It Is connected with or related
to public policy. s
"Individual right and liberty must go to
those of public good. Apply this fixed prin
ciple of all good government to the liquor
traffic as embodied In the saloon and the
question Is ono of easy solution. Is this
saloon n nuisance ? Does any ono doubt
that It Is ? Holding this view , therefore ,
that the saloon Is a nuisance , the prohibi
tion party firmly Insists that tlio same prin
ciple shall be applied to It as Is applied
to other nuisances and demands that It
should bo abolished. Wo do not say you
can make men moral by law. The prohibi
tion party makes no such claims ani holds
no such vlows. It simply holds that the
saloon Is a stumbling block over which men
and women are stumbling by the thousands
every year. But another objector rises and
Bays : 'Oh ! You cannot enforce prohibitory
laws. '
"Listen to this letter from Mr. Roosevelt ,
written to n gentleman In California and
dated June C , 1S9C ;
" 'Dear Sir : The Sunday law has been
absolutely enforced for the past year here
In New York. It Is perfectly possible to
enforce the law If the city olllclais do their
best to see that they are enforced.

AMUSEMENTS ,
Torchlight patriotism seriously Interfered
with business at the theaters last night , but
n fatr-slxed audience enjoyed "The Minstrel
of CUro" at the CrclRhton. This plays ill-
ten by the late I'red Mnrsden , U In some
rcaperts the best In Mr , Olcott'a repertory.
It tella n more plausible story than some of
the others , and although the theme U ban
died In a somewhat conventlonnj way. there
are several stroiiB ocenes and much rollick-
IIIR Irish humor combined with a llttlu
Inevitable pathos. Mr. Olcott slnss delight
fully. as before , and tells n giant storj
to the two pretty children In the play
which U an excellent bit of recitation
Luke Martin has the best opportunity In
"Tho Minstrel of Clare" that U afforded
him by the list of plays In which ho ap.
pears , and ho Improves It like the nrtlat
he Is. Ills Impersonation of the loathsome
llttlo lawyer Is an admirable piece of character -
actor work. Kitty Colcmnn , thr brignt
snubretto of the company has n p.in i'i
which she Is evidently quite at horn.1 , al
though she did not cause her line ponoiui-
ance of the widow In "The Irish Artist"
to bo forgotten. Harry Mciedlth lurt the
stioiiRcat role In which he has been scon
during this engagement , and filled It 111 .
manner worthy of high praise ; and 1'aut
ailmoro Is again opposed to the star .is a
weak youth who sins and Is redeemed.
"Miuournoen" will bo the bill nt the
matlnop this afternoon. It Is an old favor
ite , and affords a very agreeable entortaln-
mcnl. Tonlghl the engagement closes wltsi
a repetition of "The Irish Artist , " which to
some tastes Is the most enjojnblo of Mr.
Olcott's plays , It Is a fact not generally
known that two of the songs which are used
In "The Irish Artist" are especially asso
ciated by Mr. Olcott with Omaha for the
roa&on that ho composed them here one ,
"Katie Mahone , " while he was snowbound
In the blizzard of three years ago on a
train just outside of the city , nnd the other ,
"My Beautiful Irish Maid , " at the Mlllard
hotel.
Concerning the coming engagement of the
Tabers , an erroneous Impression lias been
created , probably on account of a circular
sent out recently by another theater , giving
a list of Us attractions , which Included the
names of Julia Marlowo-Tabcr imd Kobsrt
Taber Mr. nnd Mrs. Tabor's contract with
the Bojd management was made some
months ago , and the engagement which
opens tomorrow evening will be at Ihc
Boyd The advance sale or reserved seat : ,
will open at the Boyd Theater ticket office
at 8 o'clock this morning. This engagement
Is attracting much attention loc.illy. and t-r-
pccially the now production , "Romola , "
which has proven such a success. It Is
founded on George Eliot's novel , and the
play was written by Elwyn A. Barron. On
Its lirst production the success with which
the dramatist had embodied the most im
portant characters and events in the novel
In dramatic form , the beauty an.l cnmi'lete-
ness of the production , and the portrayal
of the two central cb-iracters by Jiiua Mar
lowe Taber and Hnoert Tabor , us well as tlic
performance of the secondary role , were
all warmly praised. There Is naturally a
strong desire among those familiar with tlic
works of tha celebrated English novelist
to see ouo of her most noted stories en
acted , and an equally potent wslh on Hit-
part of Julia. Marlowe-Tabor's thousand * or
admirers to witness her In a role which
offers such peculiar opportunity for the da-
play of her gifts as does "Homola. " The
heroine of George Eliot's novel Is described
not only as very beautiful , but It was the
beauty of the spiritual typo which Julia
Mailowc-Taber possesses In a deiji'oo aboM
that of her contemporaries. Thn charactei
of Tltn , demanding youth , comeliness , grace
nnd winning manner , gives Mr. Taber a cap
ital chance. The play will be given with
special scenery , as are all of the other
pieces In the repertory of Mr. and Mr .
Taber this season. The Interest manifested
beforehand in their engagement , betokens
a large and representative midlenr ? to greet
these worthy and talented young artists.
Illchnrd Mansfield , who easily stands a'
the ht'ad of American actors , begins an en
gagement at the Crelghton theater on Mon
day next. This engagement , which will
continue all through the week , with
Wednesday and Saturday matinees , will be
in the nature of a dramatic festival , as dur
ing that time Mr. Muusfleld , assisted by his
Now York Garrlck Theater Stork cnmpjnj ,
will present his full rcpeitory of pUyc ,
which Ircludes : "Dr. Jekyll and Sir.
Hjde. " "The iScariet Letter , " "Beau Bruni-
moll , " "A Parisian Homanco , " "The Mei
I'hant of Vc-nlco" and "King Blchard III. "
A glance at the above program of vastlj
contracting plays serves only to further Mr.
Mansfield's claim as the nation's greatest
actor.
Mr. Mansfield's extraordinary faculty lii
the differentiation of character , which t.lnB !
h's ' own Identity almost entirely out o :
signt , Is ono of his greatest aru > Wo have
already seen his i > ewer In such opposite
characters as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ;
may peihaps oftentimes have < vonOor > jd at
the ramco-liko finish of his Baron Chcvrlal ,
and his Arthur Dlmmesdale. Ills Beau
lirummoll has always excited admiration by
IU delicate lightness of touch , which seems
really a marvel to these who recall the In
tensity of Ills KinHlcliard III , or the cun
ning , scheming Shylock of this versatile
artist.
Art , like everything else , haa Its limita
tions , and In many cases its expression Is
VBually hedged In by the personality of the
actor. Not so with Mr. Mansfield : for ho
carries with him no trace of one character
Into " the consideration of any other part
His "Identity , his whole self scums to be
lost , In so far as human skill Is able tr > ac
complish such a feat , and thus cMcli chai-
acter stands nlnnc and complete , u portrait ,
ns It were , imllko all others.
Asldo from Mr Mansfield's great dramatlu

The principal business of the free silver
democratic stnto ccntrnl commltlco of Ne
braska at the present time appears to bo
raising , or at least ntti-mptliiK to raise ,
money. Tlio federal oniclnh Imvo been
called upon to contribute and for thla pur
pose cltctilars have been sent to these hold
ing ofllce by virtue of a commission from the
general government. These olllclais are not
only requested to contribute , but to act aa
Collecting agents In their respective towns
to secure as much as poxslblo to help along
the cause. In doing this the committee Is
but following In the tracks of their candidate

In Its contempt for the rlvll service law ,
for this levying of assessments Is n viola
tion of the spirit If not the letter of that
law.
Undoubtedly another object of the-circular
Is to ascertain how many nnd who of the
federal oitlclals have refused lo fellow the
free silver procession , that they may bo
marked for decapitation should the parly
succeed and that they may bo kept outside
the Inner circle of the party In the future
In any event. In other words , they propcao
to prepare a black list In which shall bo
cntcicJ the names of these who refuseto
rnntilbulc. Many men hltlioto prominent
In the democratic party who are not holding
office of any kind have also received copies
of this circular letter.
The letters are copies of n typewritten
original and are Identical , with the oxceo-
tlou of the address nnd the amount which
the recipient Is asked to contribute or raise.
I'rom the wide range of the amounts In
serted In different circulars It Is evident the
senders have carefully consulted the official
gazette to nficoitalti the amount oC salary
received by the person addressed In each
case and also the financial condition of tha
Intended victim , nnd they have not been at
all modest in their demands In most canes.
They have evidently proceeded on Ilia
theory that they not only wanted money , but
that they wanted plenty of It , ns the
"amount In circulation" about the free
silver headquarters "was entirely Inade
quate to transact the business of the coun
try. "
Following Is a copy of the circular :

Mullrn , I'onca , Neb. : Dear Sir Wo address
this letter to you. knowing that you nro one
of the leading democrats of your county
and believing you have the success of the
party at heart and dcslro to aid In the
election of Bryan and Sowall. In order to
overcome the normal republican majority
in this stato. the committee must have
funds with which to perfect n thorough or
ganization. Wo can expect no aid from the
national committee and have no funds In
hand now with which to begin work.
Wo urge you tomake an earnest effort
among vour friends to raiao the sum of $75 ,
to be used by the committee In defraying
the necessary expenses of this campaign.
If you cannot raise this sum nt once , will
you not guarantee the committee that the
democrats of your vicinity will contribute
this nmount requested by the 10th of Oc
tober ?
This committee has no enemies to punish
and will appreciate and gratefully lemembcr
the kind assistance of those democrats who
come to the aid of their party in Its hour
of need. Our success In the nation Is as
sured. Let each , of us do our part to carry
Nebraska by a large majority. Do not fall
to wrlto mu at once. Yours truly

Indited the following In reply :
I'ONCA , Neb. , Sept. 2 . ISDfi. An open let
ter to Hon. James C. D.'hlman , Chairman
Democratic Central Committee , Omaha ,
Neb. : Silrttcplylng briefly to ynur Icttci
of recent.n 7 asking my contribution to tin
campaign fund of the party you represent ,
permit me to nay that , presumably , you
were well aware at the time of making sucli
demand that I had the distinguished lionoi
of having been n delegate to tlio only na
tional democratic convention nt Indianapolis
H U bovond iiuestton that you have kept
tab upon nil Nebraska men composing the
state delegation , and I conclude thai , undci
Iho clrcumslanecH , your demand on me fein
n campaign contribution was for the pur
pose of placing me on record.
I do not cnro to go Into details of my ob
jection to the Chicago platform ; It Is sufll- '
clent for mo that I ronslder every plank in
It too rotten for a decent democrat to stand
upon. I have been a consistent democrat
from the lime I , as a New York soldier In
the field , cast my first vote for Qeorgo B.
McClelland , until now. and I simply nay thai
I would not endorse that platform for n life
term of the best ofilce that inlcht be offered
mo In return.
Should I accede lo your request for n cam-
palgn contribution , ns an appointee of Pres
ident Cleveland , whom you so mercilessly
and shamefully turned down In your con-
vfnllon , I should consider It my first duty
to resign the olHco I now hold , for , while I
rslccm It proper for a man to at uny time
changeMi political views , I nt the Banifl
lime cannot conceive of a more dastardly
Migrate and coward than the man who
would Join his political fortunes with jou
and at the same time hold olllco under an
administration that Is d d by you.
I think , upon the whole , I had rather do
a term In Hades ( If necessary ) with Cleveland -
land and the democratic party than to nit
nt the right hand of anything his or Its
enemies might have to offer. Hespcotfully ,
Jt. It. M'MULLEN.
