CHAPTFil I.

she , with her perfect , f rp and Innocent ,

Her guardian , ns ho remembered the enor
mity of her offenses , mattered an Impatient
exclamation , an'l ground his heel savagely
Into the new gravel on the wldo garden
path. His ward , kneeling beside a great bed
of yellow * crocuses , looked up and over her
shoulder at him with some nervousness. She
had learned that Mr. Hoathcoto only mut
tered In that exact way when suffering from
acute mental Irritation , and she waa also
aware that at such times ho was not a very
pleasant companion.
Ho lifted his cap with outward ceremony.
The reverence was , however , Just then meanIngless -
Ingless , for how could ho respect so shallow
a llttlo coquette ?
"Is It wise to kneel on that damp grass ? "
he Inquired In a cold , Indifferent voice
Kllcen llurke could gladly have smitten him
for his Indifference as well aa for his Inter
ference. "Is It worth while risking n chill
at the expense of tending those singularly
plain flowers ? Have my gardeners been
neglecting their duties of late , or have you
a natural liking for setting yourself wholly
unnecessary tasks ? "
Miss liurko did not trouble to answer , but
turned back to the crocuses they were , at
least , no plainer than Mr. Heathcole , she
told herself comfortingly.
Julian Heothcoto sauntered across the
small stretch , of lawti that lay between
them and stood beside the graceful kneel
ing figure , his dark face grim and forbidding
to a degree.
"Where Is Hal ? " ho asked curtly.
"Hal was tiresome , and so I sent him
away very early this morning. "
"Somo day , " prophesied Mr. Hcathcotc
very bitterly , "you will send him away al
together. You cannot play with the boy
forever. It would bo more merciful to dis
miss him at once , perhaps ; but then 'to
your sex mercy Is an unknown quality.
How far has he gone this time ? "
"I am not your brother's keeper , Mr.
PJ.-athcote , " she told him Icily. "I neither
know nor care where ho has gone , how long
ho will stay , or wheu lie will come homo
again. If I were you I would not distress
myself about him , for he Is well able to take
care of himself. "
Mr. Heathcoto's heavy brows were knitted
Into a still deeper frown , for he was about
to make an appeal and to plead with any
one was a well-nigh unknown degradation
to him.
"I I am fond of the boy , " he commenced
awkwardly enough , "and my stepmother has
begged mo to put In R plea for her son , or
else I would stand by In silence and let you
amuse yourself In your own way. Hal loves
you , Eileen you can'.t deny It and yet
your sole delight in tue knowledge Is that
you feel that he Is yours to wound and play
with as you please ; you Encourage him to
be with you- you aro'warm ' to him at one
moment , cold the nex't. and Eileen , can't
you awaken your better -self , and marry
him ? "
Eileen viciously picked an Invalid crocus
and threw It away she would have dearly
liked to throw It at Mr. lleathcoto had she
been a little less afraid of him.
"No , I can't ! " she aps\vefed \ crossly , "and
what is more , I won't ! not even to please
Mis. Heathcote I would do a great deal
for her , yet when I ) narry It shall bo to
please myself but I yon't , marry any one ,
ever. " , ,

"May I tell Hal so ? ! "
She Jumped up and faced him angrily ,
her usually gentle blue eyes flashing scorn
ful defiance at him.T | ;
"It Is no use-your trying to bully me Into

Julian Heathcote had certainly never Im
agined that his role of stern guardian would
appear In such a light to the temper-blinded
eyes of his ward. Hut his Imperturbability
remained unruffled , though he Inwardly con
fessed himself a fool.
"I ceased trying to influence you long
ago , " ho replied. "I thought , however , that
you might bo Inclined .to listen to reason
for my stepmother's sake. "
"There Is to my mind no reason In ex-
ppctlng me to marry Just because you wish
to bo rid of a very troublesome charge. "
His gray eyes were bent sternly upon her
faco.
"You do me an Injustice. Until you maCe
so much mischief in my house until I re
alized that you were playing with Hal I
did not object to my duties as your guard
ian. Even now I have no desire for you to
leave us. "
Her llttlo foot , In a steel-buckled Crom
well shoe , tapped the grass Impatiently ;
her head was bent and- when she spoke it
was almost sullenly.
"When I marry I shall want to get away
from this place , because I have been so mis.
erablo here. You ask mo to marry Hoi , but
it I did what would I galn"by It ? Wo would
live on here , you would still order mo about ,
criticise my shortcomings , condemn my
wifely conduct , and oh , I should end It all
by running away and drowning myself In
your nasty , weedy rlvor , Just out of pure
spite ! "
"You should not live hero ! " he made an
swer with sudden passion ; "that would be
more than I could stand. You and Hal
might go where you pleased. I would set
you up anywhere in a homo of your own.
but I could not have you hero ! If that Is
all that stands between you and the bey ,
you may make your mind quite easy , tor
your home shall never be mine. "
Her anger died out before his , her eyes
wavered and then fell , her pretty lips quiv
ered and her face grew pale.
"I knew you hated to ha > c mo here , " she
eald brokenly ; "I told Mrs. Heathcoto so ,
and and It is hateful to feel that one is an
Intruder. AVhy can't r go away and earn
my own living ? I have my pension Just
40 a year and I would rather go and bo a
nuisomald to aomo odious children , giving

"You evidently collator. " remarked her

Ho turned , his hard face softening , to meet
a tall , slim , effeminate-looking lad , who was
coming toward them over the lawn. Henry
HeathcotH wan utterly unllko his half-
brother In appearance , as well as character.
Ho was handsome , physically delicate and
morally a coward , and perhaps It was his
weakness , both of body and will , which had
always appealed to Julian's Iron nature.
Hvur since Hal was a child Julian had
cared for and protected him , and now this
girl , with her lovely face and bewitching
ways , had crime between them , and was go
ing the right way to break Hal's heart.
So Julian Hcathcotc turned away from
Eileen and laid his hand on lint's shoulder.
"Where have you been all day ? " ho nsked.
The lad's face flushed , and he cast a quick
glance at nllcen.
"I I can't toll you , " ho stammered , "bo-
cause It I Eileen knows ; Indeed she sent
me , but I only went to please her. "
Mr. Hcathcotc turned , almost brushed
past Eileen , and went away In the direction
oC the house.
The girl looked up at the lad with a
strangely mirthless llttlo smile.
"You lost your head , Hal , " Bhe said , very
wearily ; "why make such a mystery of your
going and coming ? Your mother has begun
to suspect you , and so would my guardian
If ho was not so much taken up with sus
pecting me. I suppose you have been up to
London ngaln ? It was a pity you Invented
that clumsy lie about mo on the spur of the
moment , for I had Just denied all knowl
edge ) of your whereabouts. I am getting so
tired of guarding this secret when will you
tell him ? "
"Not now , anyway , " evasively.
"Why not ? Ho Is quite reconciled to the
Idea of your getting married. "
"Yes , " answered Hal ; "but If ho heard
that wecro already married , what on
earth would he say ? His choice of a wife
for mo might clash with mine. "
Klleen took a stop toward him. and laid a
hand upon his sleeve.
"Hal , " she said , "do let me tell him. You
don't understand how bow unfair It Is tome
mo to expect mo to keep this marriage a se
cret. "
Hut Hal laughed , very gayly and care
lessly.
"My dear little Elley , I won't allow you to
do anything of the sort , and I have your
promise not to sneak about me. I'm safe
enough so far. and don't you understand ?
The Joke of the whole affair Is that he
thinks I'm dead nuts on you , and that you
are half spoons on me you don't mind
dear , do you ? "
"Why should I mind what ho thinks ? "
she questioned bitterly.
"And , I believe , " whispered Hal , confiden
tially , "that the wooden-brained , Quixotic
old ass Is In love with you himself. Think
of what I am , saving you from , Elley Just
fancy Julian as the fond lover ! He would
bo a bit overpowering , wouldn't he ? "
"You , " mentioned Eileen , with unvar
nished truthfulness , "aro not only selfish ,
ungrateful and a coward , but you are a
fool as well ! "
"That comes. " muttered Hal sulkily , as
she turned and left him , "of trying to Joke
with a girl there's not a woman in a thou
sand with any sense of humor. "
CHAPTER II.
The sunshine was streaming in at Mrs.
Heathcoto's open windows and shining with
aggravating persistency straight across
that lady's face as she lay In bed waiting
for her maid to come and dress her. Mrs.
Heathcoto always spent her mornings In
bed. Shu was pleased to pose as an Inter
esting invalid , and her stepsrm , with whom
she lived , was considerate enough to humor
her whim. Her own son and Eileen had
faith In her supposed delicacy , and the girl
waited on her hand and foot , doing all In
her power to make her life brighter.
Now , as Eileen entered the room In ad
vance of the maid her quick eyes perceived
how the sun was dazzling the Interesting
.patient's . languid eyes.
"Why didn't you ring for me , dear ? " she
Inquired reproachfully. "I shall be afraid
to leave you unless you let me know when
you need me. "
"I must not be solflsh , my child , " replied
Mrs. Heathcote , with a resigned smile"how ;
can I expect to chain a bright young girl
to an Invalid's couch ? The cau-de-cologne ,
please , darling , and pray , Graves , pick up
that untidy scrap of paper from the carpet ,
It has vexed me to see It there all the morn-
Ing. I doubt If the room was thoroughly
swept out yesterday. Hove you seen Hal
this morning , Eileen ? "
"Only at breakfast. Ho went out 1mm/-
dlatcly ho had swallowed his food , " the girl
answered briefly she did not care to talk
of Hal just then.
"And Julian , where Is he ? "
Graves was busy preparing her mistress'
bath , and Eileen turned her back to Mrs.
Heathcoto and stood fidgeting with the sil
ver-backed brush on the dressing table.
"I believe he Is In the studv. "
She cared llttlo less to talk about Mr.
Heathcote.
' 'Did ' he breakfast early or with you ? "
asked i.Mrs. Heathcote , who was evidently
In an Inquiring mood.
"I was late , " the girl replied , "ho and Hal
wore just finishing when I came down , and
they went away and left mo to clear up the
remnants of the feast. "
Mrs. Heathcoto smiled a faint smile. She
was , perhaps , commencing to see through
Hal , and to suspect that his professed affec
tion for Eileen was either n mistake or a
pretense. A few weeks ago she had believed
that Eileen was playing with her boy's heart ,
now It seemed more likely that ho was toyIng -
Ing with hers. I'oor Eileen ! It was a great
pity , but as Hal was evidently tired of her ,
it might bo as well for Julian to marry her ,
and thus leave Hal quite free to marry whom
ho pleased. Her mother's love and care
must guard Hal from all possible awkward
ness.
"My love , " she said gently , "you will .find
a Jotter from my banker upon my dressing
tabje , you will take it down to your guar
dian and ask him to read It over for me ? I
am not a business woman , and It puzzles
me. "
Long-suffering Eileen went slowly and re
luctantly downstairs , lingering for a long
while in the great cherry hall to make much
of a IUIKO sulphur-crested cockatoo , so that
sha might put off the evil hour of meeting
Mr. Heathcoto alone for as long aa she could.
Then with sudden resolution she turned
and knocked at his study door.
A voleo rather Impatiently hade her enter ,
for Mr. Heathcoto was head over ears com
piling a very learned volume for the Instruc
tion of mankind , and , therefore , resented be
ing disturbed.
But when he glanced up and saw Eileen
his book was qulto forgotten ; he throw down
his pen and rose , drawing forward a chair
for her beside his writing table.

other day had evidently scared her. Well ,

persistently hard upon her ,

he asked , In a wonderfully gcntla voice.
Then n fearful and wonderful thing hap
pened , for Ullccn spirited , defiant Ktleen
burst Into a wild flood of tears , and made a
blind , Ineffectual dash for the door.
How Mr. Heathcoto stopped her he never
knew. The next thine lie realized was that
ho. had seated her In his own favorite arm
chair , and was kneeling bestdo her , making
futile masculine efforts to console and quiet
her
"Eileen ! " ho whispered , "I have made the
last six months a hell to you ; I was a brute
to urge you to marry Hal , but dear , In
honor , It seemed as If I dared not do any
thing else. Ho cares for you , and his mother
thought It seemed , at first , as though
you were fond of him. Child , you shall
flirt If you please you shall do anything
that you llko If you will not break my
heart with these tears. "
"Go away , " she sobbed , and shrank back
as ho laid his hand upon her arm. "I am
crying because you you have mndo my
head ache. "
"I will never cross you again , In any
thing , " ho promised rashly , "only don't
cry ! "
There was a long , painful pause. He
turned away to the open French windows ,
and stood there his back to the weeping
girl staring out blankly Into the bright
flower garden.
"Until father died , " at last she said In a
very tremulous voice , "and I came here to
live , I never knew what It was to be really
miserable. Even when dad was In India
and I was left In Eliglnnd with strangers. 1
was happier by far lhan I am now. And he
trusted mo to you because you were the
son of his dearest friend ; he believed that
you would bo kind to me , and you have
only been cruel. "
He was still looking out , all unseeing. Into
the dazzling sunshine , when he heard her
light step cross the room ; the door opened ,
closed , and ho was left alone with only his
own thoughts for company.
Ho turned , threw himself Into a chair nnd
bent his face forward on his hands. For the
ways of a self-sacrlflclng guardian nnd
brother may be hard as well as strange.
CHAPTER HI.
A lark was mounting higher and higher
still Into the cloudless sky. Eileen and Hal
stood down by the river and watched him ,
their thoughts apparently Intent on him and
him alouc.
"It's a bit awkward , " admitted Hal.
"I always told you so , " replied Eileen ,
with a prodigiously deep sigh , "and the
longer it goes on the moro awkward It be
comes. Your mother Is getting so fretful ,
too , and asks such tiresome questions. Why
won't you make a clean breast of It to Mr.
Heathcoto , Hal , and have done with It. "
"I daren't ; he'd cut up rough. You tell
him for me , Elley , old girl , do like a
trump ! "
The girl's face paled , she cast a little nerv
ous glance behind her , then as If fearing
that the pretty wood about them had ears-
she answered in a low , awed voice :
"To tell you the truth , Hal , If you daren't
tell him , neither dare I. "
"Oh , humbug ! " exclaimed Hal Impatiently.
"Ho won't mind hearing It half as much
from you as from me. "
They wandered out of the little wood Into
a quiet meadow , and here , with a sigh ,
Eileen sank down on the river bank. Hal
throw himself down beside her , rolled over
on his back and pulled his cap down over
his e > es to keep away thu glaring sunshine.
Ho was diplomatic enough to leave Eileen
to her own thoughts for awhile.
Her thoughts , poor child , were far from
pleasant. Presently she roused herself from
them , and , looking straight in front of her ,
asked-
"Did you over tell him that you were fond
of mo ? "
"No ! " laughed Hal ; "he was only too ready
to take It for granted. I merely sat tight
and let him think so it suited my plans ,
you know. "
"Has It ever struck you , Hal , that you
are the most selfish creature on the face of
the earth ? " Inquired Eileen.
"I ? " queried Hal , in genuine surprise.
"Great Scott ! Why , no ! I never think or
myself , Eileen ; all this time I've been
thinking of my wife , and wondering how I

see , when Julian hears that wo are married
ho may turn crusty and cut off my allow

"Hal ! " cried a harsh voice , Just behind
them ,
The lad pushed back his cap and sprang
to his feet , his face flushlnK hotly as hemet
mot his half-brother's stern eyes , hlleen
did not move or even glance up ; It was all
no business of hern , she told herself ; why
should she Interfere ? "
"I overheard your last words , " said Julian
Heathcoto , with a very unpleasant little
sneer , "May I offer you both my most sin
cere congratulations , not only on your mar
riage , but on having so successfully duped
me ? Hut why was I not taken Into your
confidence , when I so charitably encour
aged the match ? "
"Eileen , " Muromcrcd Hal , "you tell him

Eileen mechanically picked a buttercup
and tossed H forward into thu river.
"I would rather not , " she answered slowly ,
"but still " then who rose , and for the first

CINCINNATI , Sept. 27. John L. Spohn , a
photographer here , claims to be the fifth
carl of Ludlow , Viscount Preston and Baron
Ludlow of Ardsalla In the peerage of Ireland
and Baron Ludlow In that of the United
Kingdom. Today his brother left here for
Shropshire. Wales , to claim the rights and
titles of the elder brother. John Leo Sophn
Is poor , but his brother , W. H. Spohn , who
lives at Hamilton , Canada , Is wealthy , and
has corresponded with English attorneys un
til he Is satisfied ho can establish his elder
brother's titles by lineal descent. The
estate embraces Shropshire , county Wales ,
and Is valued at 120,000,000. The carlshlp
has been extinct since 1S42. W. H. Spohn
has secured the old manuscript of the family
tree. Ho has numerous relics of the last
recognized earl , who died In 1S40. The title
and estates then descended to the carl's un
cle , John G. Ludlow , the earl dying with
out Issue. His uncle was dead and the un
cle's son , Peter n. Ludlow , lived at Albany ,
N. Y. , and from there went to Hamilton.
Ont. , where ho died two months after reach
ing the place. His only child , a daughter ,
being poor , made no claim. Her eldest son
Is John Lee Spohn , who Is now making the
claim. John Leo Spohn married Miss Las-
tor. Their children are Mrs. L. E. Ryan ,
Mrs. Maud Van Hort and Mrs. Ada Moeschol ,
of this city.
