CHICAGO , Sept. 18. The strength dis
played by the Liverpool nml Merlin markets
was Inlluentlnl enough to cause December
wheat to close ' 40 higher today , In spite of
continued heavy northwestern receipts.
Corn and oats were both llrm and closed
% c higher each. Provisions were all
lilgher. pork advancing 2c , lard "lie and
ribs lOo.
Whnit had a firm opening , but very soon
weakened and for over hulf an hour the
bulls were on the ragged edge. Then the
ncntlmcnt changed ngalti. Thn opening
prlco for December was from ClUi to CHic ,
na compared with COTtc to Glc , yesterday's
cloning figures. It commenced to sag Im
mediately , touching C0 > ic before the rise
commenced , which , by 11 o'clock had
carried the price lip to 02c. Offers tnnilo
from Chicago and New York lust night on
the basis of yesterday's advance did not
meet with a very liberal response In the
way of acceptances. That was probably
one of this reasons for the temporary
wrakness of the llrst half hour. Another
reason for It was the receipts at M In IIP *

year , were still heavy , amounting to 1,013
cars. Chicago receipts were again more

Liverpool opened V4d higher for spot wheat

sharp advance nt Herlln was the principal
factor In the. strength of the latter part of
the session. After the advance to ffic there
was a very general desire to realize tirollts
on the early purchases and that resulted In
11 gradual decline to fil'.ic. . around which
THco It hung for about half an hour. The
bullish feeling was Htlll uppermost , how
ever , and It rallied again to from filM-e to
Clrie ; and closed at from Cl ie to fil c.
Corn was fairly active and llrm. The
damp we.-i.ther and the strenuh of the
wheat market were the Impelling causes of
the belter prices realized for the offerings.
The demand from shorts developed as
