lllcyclo racing men nro about to enter on
a. season ot unwonted activity In Nebraska ,
succeeding one of unwonted tUilhie. s. It has
been some tlmo since a warm riding event
stirred the blood of the wheel cranks In this
slate , but there's lots n-comln' now. Floyd
McCnll's blue ribbon meet on Saturday night
will be a curtain raiser. He ban a good list
of entries for a lot of short events and will
show nil evening of rare sport. It will
bo followed during the week by several
events of minor Importance In the state ,
chief among which Is the one at Wayne on
Thursday. Then at Kearney on the same
day there Is a meet arranged , at which seine
very fast Denver and Cheyenne men are en
tered , with some others from Utah. Thla
meet serves to break the Journey from the
uestern points to Omaha , where the Omaha.
Wheel club "Oooglers" meet Is hold on Sat
urday. September 26. And on Monday nlsBl
the big sU-day race starts at the Charles
Street park. And If anyone thinks these
events are not attracting a lot of fast riders
In Nebraska he should seu McCall or Prank
Selfkln and ask about the entries. Tbcru
Is already booked n list of names such as
never utartcd on a Nebraska track. Names
that nro known from co.ist to coast arc down
and tbu owners expect to start.
Requests for entry blanks have been re-
ccheil from the Coburti brothers and
Cabaunc of St. Louis , Decker of St. Paul and
Kverhardt of Kansas City , Kalrmon , Lawson ,
( iiistavunson and nt least two others from
Chicago , Molersteln of Sioux City , the whole
list from Denver. Lincoln's own and only
Kb Mockctt and his mates , and the Omaha
"push" make a nice list of professionals
ulio will display their'abilities as flyers. Of
these nil arc certain to be here. In the
amateur list there are many well known
men ready to start. Olio notable entry
promised Is that of Fred Stevens of Ot-
tumwa , la. , who holds the Towa mile record.
Ho Is fully as speedy as his brother Orlando ,
who has done so well on the big circuit this
year. One thing local men will much regret
Is that Joe Dayno of Council IlhUTs cannot
start at the Omaha Wheel club meet. He
has made up his mind to abandon racing for
this year. Bnynn was the fastest novice of
the year and bade fair to bo the fastest of
local amateurs at the end of the season.
Frank Sclfkcn , who Is booking the entries
for the wheel club events , Is busy as a
beaver with his work , nnd says he has sev
eral surprises stored away for the knowing
ones In the list be Is preparing.
There will be a warm tlmo nt nikhorn
tomorrow afternoon , whom a nice little prize
list has been put tip for some amateur
events , under League'of American Wheel
men sanction nnd In which Omaha and Kre-
mont riders will comnetu against the coun
try "hot hoys. "
It "Is Just beginning Jo dawn on wheelmen
that the close of the season's racing In these
parts Is to be a hummer.

HIM. CITY , S. 1) . Sept. 17. ( Special. )
The history of the St. Klmo mine during Iho
past three months furnishes a flr.o Illustra *
tlon uf the possibilities of gold mining In
this region. Yesterday a clran-up wax inado
at this property after a five dnjs' run with
a Trcinnlnc stamp mill , nnd the retort Is
said to hnvo weighed nearly llfly ounces , a
yield of approximately $200 from the t\\olvo
tons of ere crushed for each twenty-four
hours otoperatlon. The St. Klmo mlno wa *
ono of the first mines worked In this region.
Porno eight or ten years ago the property
yluMeil a considerable sum from rich sur
face ores , hut after tlm Incorporation of the
company llttlo deu'lopment work was done
and until the present year the operation of
the mlno was practically abandoned. * Some
months ago James McDonald , \cterati
void miner , superintendent and one of the
pilnclpnl owners In the rroperty , discovered
and opened a rich vein iinpn a portion of the
ground never before worked. Working alone
and under the disadvantage ot limited capi
tal , Mr. McDonald has brought the mine to
Us present stage of successful operation.
After the first rich relurns from early workIngs -
Ings the stockholders of the company \\ero
unwilling to contribute for development
work , but having confidence/ the property ,
McDonald lefused to null , and his efforts
h.ivo further Illustrated the fact that the
region about Hill City Is preeminently n
"poor mat V COUP try.
The now St. Klmo letlgeovercropped at
the surface of the ground In a lodge sev
eral Inches In width and now ranges In
width from three to sK feet. At n point
near the mouth of the working tunnel u
largo ledge ! exposed , carrying good millIng -
Ing values ami revealing rich specimens of
rock at jiolnts In the vein. This ledge lias
boon "stripped" and the ore body will bo
worked by Iho open cut method. A shaft
Is being sunk upon the vein opened In the
tunnel nnd at a depth of loss than fifty
feet the vein .las "straightened" to nearly
vertical. The company has purchased ono
of the Tremnlno steam stamp mllla , which
will crush sit tons of ere per stamp every
twenty-four hours. This mill ninmlsos to
play an Important part In the development
of the rici veins so characteristic of this
region. The returns from the St. Elmo
ores for a period ot lobs than two weeks
will pay the entire cost of the plant.
Night and day shifts are at work In the
mlno and th , > St. Klmo Is already classed
with such producers as the Sunny Shlu and
Golden Slipper.
