CHICAGO , Stpt. IS. The pralu markets
were canter today. Wheat was depressed by
continued large northwestern receipts and
declined " < , c for December. Corn anil oatfl
both declined He. Provisions were also
easier and show flight losses. The advance
yesterday of'tc \ per bushel In the price of
wheat was soon lost this morning , In fact
the first transaction opened It out. Decem
ber , which closed on Monday at CO'Ae , opened
with sellers at from OOc down to 694c. In
n very few minutes It was r.irnnd ! be
fore an hour had passed It had touched
COHe. The last named quotation was the
rallying point from which It rei.Hed to 6TOo
In the next half hour. The New York stock
market was heavy , nnd northwestern re
ceipts were again very large , amounting to
1.475 earn , against 1193 cars on the corresponding
spending day last year. Cables were some
what disappointing , as they were without
liny especial advice , notwithstanding our
Btrong market yesterday. This news en
couraged the bears , and they sold wheat
with considerable freedom. Huslncss was
mere nearly active for the llrst two hours ,
fitter which It became dull and tame , but
rather nervous , with Vie lluetualions on a
very small amount of buying or selling.
After the reaction to 631 c the price dropped
again to WJ'1 , with a sale or two at from
ti9'ic to ( VJV4C , and after that it kept on a
teeter between KUfcp sellers and Kl'/ie ' buy
ers during the remainder of the session.
Some buying orders were hern from the
United Kingdom , but they were for Duluth
wheat , and a cargo of SO.IOO bu. was worked
fiom there for export. New York iidvlsed
that vessel room had been engaged there
today for 20 boatloads for shipment In No
vember. The closing price here was 59',4c ' ,
or l-ie lower than on the day before.
Porn was iinlet and weak. ICurly rales
were at the closing price of yesterday , but
the sharp break In wheat and the line
weather started a free liquidation and short
selling , resulting In < ! ip loss. May opened
unchanged at 2l ic , sod off to from 24\4c \ to
2l ? c and closed easy at 21" ! .
Oats were weak In common with other
grain markets though the easy leellug was
Independent , brought by free offerings and
limited demand. The advance of eastern
freight rates cut off wheat shipping Imiulry.
Jlay opened from nlioul Vfce lower at 19c.
declined to 1W4C and closed easy at that
price.
Although the provision market , like
wheat , corn and oats , Inclined toward lower
prices , there was no pressing desire to sell
observable , and In the end prices were not
much lower than they were yesterday. The
slight decline noted wan due principally to
October liquidation. January pork closed
tie lower at J0.70 , January lard unchanged
nt W.C7'A and January ribs 2'/4c ' lower at

CATTLK The receipts today were 4I7 ! ) ,
the- largest day's run of the year to ilato.
Of the catlle here 1,298 were consigned
illrecl to a loeal packer , leaving 3,000 on
sale. Killing cattle constlUiteil u much
larger proportion of Ihu reeelpls than hns
been the rule of late , both corn-fed na
tives nnd western range steers being freely
offered. The market as a whole was In
clined to be slow ami on some kinds of
cattle easier.
Choice corn-fed beeves could safely be
quoted about steady , though there have
not been many hrro of lale with which
comparisons could be made. Some lMl-lb.
natives sold al M.CO. olhers at $4.riO : , and
on down lo JI.OO and under. Western
steers were generally lower to say tluit
they were lOc lower than last week would ,
perhaps , best describe the situation. Owing
to the number on sale the movement wns
a lltlle slow , but the cattle kept dolling
nnd were pretty well cleaned up before
the close.
The miu-ket on. I'm tellers' slock was also
slow , the orrcrliiRH being large and Ihe
buyers Indifferent. . The best cow stuff
was not mticJi different from yruterilMv
as regards valnesibtit : unless It 'happened
to be somcth.lng very attrnctlvu in Ihe
eyes of the buyers , It wns lower.
I-or the nnmlH-r of cattle here the offer
ings of feeders , wore very light. At the
samp time good feeders and good stock
cattle were In. iltnjnml , and while packers
were bidding lower on killing cattle , the
cattle that wduld do for feeders were sell
ing at fully stcn'dyprices. . Heal attractive
stockers and feeders were not only steady ,
but even stronger in some . .
cases. Itonre-

occasion of more than ordinary Interest to
those present. The hall was tastefully dec

Iced punch was served at a table In the

up her hair and Miss 1'ond's Imitation of
knitting and her truly edmlrablo repre
sentation of a young girl lamenting hys

the best. Miss I'ond , In particular , a young
woman who has lately come from Missouri
Valley for Instruction ut Mr. Short's school ,
showed such marked ability as will almost
certainly bring her to high places In the
profession which slio wishes lo adapt as
her life-work.
At the close of the regular program Mr.

"In Old Kentucky" smashed a good many-

has been In existence over forty years antr
in that time It him held many Immense-
