POTNBV. Kng. . Sept. 7. " .lake" Clamlanr

thti four-mile championship course from 1'ut.
noy to Mortlnkc , defeated James Stanbury
of Anstrnllu , who recently beat "Wag" Unrd.
Ing for the championship of Ihc world.
the world's chain-
The race toilay was for
plonghlp. $2.uOO and the Spoilsman cuji.
The weather was as illsmal us It could be ;
there was a foul , a protest , which was dlsrc-
Knrdcd. and Oaudanr won by twenty lengths
In twenty-three minutes and one second.
Uoth men were very nervous nml fidgety
while nt the stake boats marking the startIng -
Ing line. They brokn away repeatedly , and
there were twelve fiilfo starts. Onuilnur was
Blower In his first few strokes than his rival.
nnd iStanhury's higher rate of striking en-
nblcd him to show tlio Toronto man the way
during llio early part of the race. At the
end of the first quarter mile Stan bury led by
n foot , but nt the third of a mile the two
tioats were level , nnd so continued for n few
strokes. The half mile post was passed In
' seconds Gail-
two minutes and twenty-one' ,
ilntir lending by about a quarter of a length.
Stnnbury at this stage of the ruco appeared
to bo In trouble , and the oarsman from
Toronto simply walked nway from him.
After the mile mark Stanbury spurted des
perately , as If attempting to foul Gnudaur.
When the oarsmen shot under Hammersmith
bridge the nose of thn Australian's shell was
almost touching the stern of rjnudanr's boat.
nnd about two furlongs above the bridge
there was n slight touch. Stanbury promptly
held up his hand nnd claimed n foul , lint
cs both boats were In the center of the river
the referee refused to admit the claim. Stan.
bury , who hail stopped rowing In order to
claim the foul , was now a badly beaten man.
nnd Gaudaur went right away nnd won ns
he pleased. The betting wns 5 to 2 on Stan-
bury at the start and 3 to 1 on Gnmlaur after
a third of a mile had been rowed.
Gaudnur has held the professional cham
pionship of America since 1X93 nnd twlec
before , In 18SC and 1&S7 , ho held the same
honor.
Ouudnur and Stnnbury have met before.
The contest took place nt tbo regatta at

not In good form. Slncn that time. Oaudaur
IIUH defeated ICdward Ilanlan , Georgn Hu-
lieiir. Huckett , lingers ami other profes
sionals nt the Halifax regatta. Ho also
stroked the "four" which beat llubonr s

ni or , ICd Ilanlan nnd Wallace Iloss , but hade

his clover style , whloh wns very much ad
mired by the Kngllsh experts. In ISM !
Gaudnur rowed Heneh , the Australian , for
the championship , from Putney to Jlort-
lake.
Stanbury won the Australian chnmplon-
Bhlp In 1R91 , when he defeated John McLean

The annual Labor day crlck-t game which

on the Omaha grounds between two tinis
captained by H. Lnwrie and E. H , Kongue
The teams were numerically strong. It was
soon evident that It was , i bowler's Any
nnd despite the number of pool batcrx
on botli sides the scores wcrj .small , wlileil *
enabled the bowlers to improve their uvei'-
ages.
The fielding on both sides was good , ! .nd
runs were kept down In line shape. Atlie
same time , some rather y.ow ! plr.ys WPIO
made , greatly to the delight of the batters
Spragne had his eye on t'.ie ball , and a. *
backstop did not make an ciror , while
Slmms for his Ido had ihoi.x.no record.
Branton and Mulr made gr.ind ft-ind
catches. IJobb was equ.illy sict.iculAr | In
his fielding , and made no mUtu < os. New
and HIchelleii , for Ihelr respective F'des ,
did some fine work at the wlckot. I'.nwcrs
and Wilson made n. reqj.-l for therwlvos ,
disposing of the entire side without i-nanfe
ami t times were unplayable.
Lawrle and Cameron dll this eftee.'ve
trundling for their side , the latter again
making one of his phenomenal a"orngts.
Harry Hill and Charlie Hill were th 3ily
batters to rcacih double figure1 ! , Hlmms
coming- next with nine. It necm" ' ! that
nearly all the rungettlng was mnda slowly ,
while the bowling was on the . , pai nn 1 r.ir.ld

were made , and' what were made were cut
off by the smart Ileldlng. Sco-e-r
