Thft feature of the past week , ns roR.irds
the Jobbing trade of the rlty , was the largo
attendance of country buyers consequent
upon the holding of tlio State fair. Kor
Homo weeks retailers In all sections of Ne
braska nnd In western Iowa ns well have
bxen looking forward to State fair week
ns the time when they would visit the city
nnd innko ft personal selection ot stocks ,
as well an enjoy a brief holiday. A. good
iniiny orders Imvo been held baek with
that end In Vluw , and the merchants who
visited the city the past week were all
ready to buy. It Is snfo to say that It was
-the liveliest week that Omaha Jobbers have
experienced In a long time. No one bought
very heavily , hut every one bought HOIUO-
thlns- and the orders as a whole footed up
to very respectable amounts at the differ
ent Jobbing houses.
Kvery merchant had a good deal to say
ixbout the splendid crops In his * section , so
ni'.ich corn , hay and feed of all kinds that
farmers do not know what to do with all
the produce that they have grown. The
only unfortunate feature Is that prices are
so low that the farmers have no money.
Small grain hardly nioro than pays the
cost of hauling to market , while hay will
not sell for enough In Omaha to pay the
freight , except trom nearby points. The
Hcarulty of money In the country consequent
quent upon the very low prices paid for
farm produce was the reason given by
visiting buyers for the smallncsa ot their
orders.
Jobbers , after listening to the opinions of
retail merchants , generally express them
selves ns satlsllcd that there can be no
decided Improvement In the voluino of busi
ness doing until prices on leading farm
products advance.
UIl-'FlSnENT UUPAUTMENTS OFTIIADK
Hut to change from generalities to a moro
detailed account : The dry goods people rc-
pcrt a large and active business. It is not
to bo understood that there has been a big
clashing business or that largo orders have
been the rule. On the contrary , the orders
hnvu been generally small , ranging mostly
fiom $100 to $110 , though some have been
booked that ran considerably above the last
named llgtire. It will bo some tlmo befoie
all the orders will bo sent out In spite of the
fact that extra force has been put to woik
In the. ! shipping departments.
There have been a large number of hard
ware merchants In during the week , and ,
while they have placed a good many orders ,
the orders generally have been small. In
dicating that the buyers are Htlll without
confidence In the ability of the country to
consume any great quantity ot merchan
dise. A good deal of complaint was heard
as to the scarcity of money , owing to the
very low prlees , and until there Is a change
In that respect merchants do not appear to
expect very much business and they nre
accordingly buying very sparingly.
One boot ami shoo house kept a register
for all visiting merchants anil at the close
of the week It contained 175 names. A very
considerable business was done by the Job-
. hers representing that branch of the Job
bing trade , but , as was the case In other
lines , the orders were generally small.
A fair business la reported by the rubber
goods people.
The furniture trade was something of a
dls.'ippolntment. The attendance of buyers
representing that line of business was small
ami the orders showed a very conservative
feeling. The fnct Is that furniture Is gen
erally looked upon as a luxury In the coun
try and hence something thai can be done
without when money Is scarce and times
hard ,
WITH THE GHOCHUS.
In the grocery line there Is not much
that u merchant cares to select from per
sonal examination , the goods for the most
parf being , standard. At .the same time
the grocery 'Jobbers took great pains to
entertain all their customers. The attend
ance of country grocers was large and the
volume of trade very satisfactory. The
Jobbing grocery houses arc beginning to
feel the Influence ot the approach of fall
The demand has been Improved In all lines
during the past week , but retailers are sill
pursuing a conservative ! course In buying
Their orders are all for small lots , but
they are more numerous than nt any Him
since the spring season closed. Prices resl
on a low imsls nnd there Is little In the
outlook for the near future tovtirr.ini
buyers In expecting an Increase In market
values. In fact , the general opinion seems
to be that prlees In most lines will , If any
thing , bo lower a month hence.
Country produce markets have been very
quiet all the week. The holding of a state
fair Is the Hlgnal for every one to run li
all the produce In the surrounding country
with the result that prices arc depressoi
and trade Is rendered very dull for the
lar produce houses.

CHICACiO. Sept. C. Corn nin.1 oats both
went through their accustomed perform
ance of making new low records today ,
closing about Uo lower each. Wheat snf-
feied from apprehension of heavy northwest -
west receipts and closed -He lower. Pro
visions declined from Ce to lOc.
Wheat at the opening gave it perform
ance that has become stale from frequent
repetition. It made a false start nt about
advance , and had to Immediately re
turn nnd commence over again. Decem
ber. which closed yesterday at from oS'.ic
to 5SV- , commenced this morning nl tS'.ic.
In about ten minutes It was down around
MHO , with occasionally a few sales at 1-lCc
below that , and In the close neighborhood
of those prices It rested for a time. The
Immediate cause of the opening rise was
that comparatively cheerful tone of the
llnanclal columns of the morning papers
nnd the publication of the heavy quality ot
3,3G3,8G2 bu. as the dour and wheat export
for the week , compared with 2.2CO.OOO bu.
In the similar week of the year before.
Cables , as has frequently been the case re
cently. did not respond to the decline here
yesterday , nnd this was an additional source
of strength. The weakness which so
quickly succeeded the V\c opening advance
was ostensibly the result of the carload re
ceipts at Minneapolis and Duluth , being reported -
ported as numbering 1,117 cars , against 1,159
last year. The effect of this was dissi
pated , however , when It was learned that
the receipts at Minneapolis were the ac
cumulation of two days , but It had the ef
fect of calling general attention to what
may bo expected from that source , An
accumulation of over 3,000,1)00 ) bu. for the
week , expected as the result of the move
ment , with that much more to he carried
In thu visible supply on a stringent money
market , was without doubt the chief reason
for the decline. The Chicago receipts were
2CS cars , only ten of which were ot rontract
quality. The ilny'a clearances from Atlan
tic ports were liberal , and Now York re
ported a good Inquiry there for export , but
nothing could revive the bullish spirit of
the market , which had been so promptly Bat
upon at the opening. Lower continental
'cables ' tntensltlcu thu weakness , and a gen
eral selling out ot purchases made around
BStie carried the price down to from 57c
to 5Sc at the close.
Corn was still weaker than It had boon ,
reaching an even lower depth. September
declined to the unprocedentodly low price
of 13lc per bu. May opened a shade higher
at from 21 c to 21140 , but soon turned weak
and declined to 21 lie , the closing price. The
weakness of wheat and the fact that corn
Is now practically out' of danger from frost
were the ruling Inlluences.
Oats were slow and weak , prices reaching
n lower llgure than ever known before.
I'ho weakness In wheat and corn and the
dullness In speculation were against the
price. May opened unchanged nt lSc , and
declined to from ISMc to lSic , where It
closed.
Provisions virtually repeated the/ per
formance of the day before. Trade was
light and when buyers appeared the pack
ers had all kinds for sale for January de
livery. January pork declined from $ . > .G.j at
the start to $5.53 , closing nt the latter.
January lard from J.1.G2i ! dropped to $ : i 57V.

The New York FlnanclW says this week : Al
though over J7.r > POono arrived from Europe , over
14,000,000 of thH gold arrived too late to be In-
eluded In the current statement. From this
time out the bunks should begin to reflect the
full effects of the heavy shipment. The FtMe *
men ! otherwise Is n repetlllon of those for three
weeks previous. The Imnks are closing heavily
to the Interior , and lire making up for the wlth-
diawals of enxli by eonlrnetlns their loans , nnd
mo also taking out ns much new circulation ns
possible to tide over the piesent stringency.
.Hist bow long this policy of contraction could
be continued without serious results Is a ques
tion , but fortunately the supply of gold received
or now lu transit will render further action of
tbo kind unnecessary. The bank slalement does
not show It , but the Imports of gold nre nlrt-ndy
easing the situation to u considerable extent.
The trouble Is thnt the surplus l.s unevenly dis
tributed twelve of the national banks ftlll be

Ilio National ritliens , showing only 1G.B per cent.
As for netual operations the banns
gained II.S3I.1CO In gold. The loss
in null , considering the magnitude of Interior
shipments , Is rather small. The one favorable
feature wilch the week's results show Is that
withdrawals for hoarding do not liuiire tn any
extent Thp decrease In deposits was caused liy
loan 'commotions and the movinent nhovc
stated. Tlmt the loss In rash nt this season
Is not abnormal Is shown by Hie fact that the
Intel lor demands lust year from September ,
to October M , decreased deposits fK.Oon.OiM ) . The
Fourth National , Third Niillonnl and Western
National made large Increases In circulation.
Since the first week In August the banks have
taken out tl.179.MO new circulation. Whether , as
In 1W3 , the notes will be returned almost nil-
used It not known , but B , furf.ier expansion In
vli-w of the heavy gold Import * , would seem un
likely ns the prollt In It Is only fractional.

SI'ENCEU , la. , Sept. 2. To the Killtor
ot The Dee : In answer to the article In
the morning World-Herald ot August 21) ) ,
In which a statement Is made that "Clay
county , lown , Is doubtful : " You will no
tice that the writer of that article haa not
the courage to sign his name. If he knows
anything about thu politics of this county
he knows that It Is safely republican and
for McKlnloy , as Is the state of Vermont.
The free silver democrats and populists of
this county have Joined forces In support
of Mr. Uryan and the Chicago platform , but
notwithstanding nil that the majority for
MeKlnley and honest money will receive
nn increased vote over any previous year In
Clay county's history. We are In the best
portion of the best agricultural state In
the union ; our population Is of that Intelli
gent class that has made Iowa farms valu
able and easy to borrow money on at the
lowest rates of Interest , an.d with few ex
ceptions they have no desire to pay their
debts In depreciated money , but on the
3d of November they will march up to
the polls and vote for the man who is In
favor of opening up the factories of the
United States , thereby restoring to the
farmers the markets that gave them good
prices for their products , rather than the
man who would open up the. mints owned
by the taxpayers of the United States to
the mine owners of the world for the pur
pose of coining without price GO cents
worth of their product into United States
dollars and then ask these same farmert ,
to guarantee their value. Wo have Just
completed a poll of this county by town
ships and wo find , as I have stated , an
Increased majority for the republican
ticket over any previous year , and nearly
every day some one that we had noted ns
for free silver and Ilryan conies to us
and asks fo lirfvo Us change out4 books so
ns to have them , show his name safely In
the republican ranks' for MeKlnley and
hopest money. Very truly yours.

CHICAGO. Sept. 1 , 1SOG. To Ucpubllcan
Women ; The honorable recognition given
to women by the national republican com
mittee should bo acknowledged by them In
embracing the present opportunity to serve
the republican party and the country. Never
were there more powerful and obvious mo
tives for persistent and united effort among
women than now. Morality nnd unity , the
Indispensable supports of the home and the
nation , are being assailed. Where is se
curity for thn future honesty of our sons If
they arc now taught the lessons of repudia
tion ? Where is security for our national
union that cost us suffering and blood If
partisan misrepresentation and Intrigue
alienate the south and west from north and
cast ?
In the name of good faith and honesty , of
union and prosperity , we urge women every
where to help maintain the nation's honor
and unity. This can ho done most clfcctlvely
by united effort in forming women's repub
lican clubs , or MeKlnley nnd Holmrt clubs
or sound money clubs , where women can
meet and discuss the great Issues of the
campaign and can consult as to plans anil
methods of Influencing voters.
In cnnncctlon with and under the super
vision of the national republican committee
the women's branch of the work has opened
headquarters In the Auditorium Annex , Chicago
cage , where all communications to me should
be addressed. I shall be plcapcd to com
municate with any person relative to any
phase of the work and to furnish campaign
literature and constitutions for the forma
tion of local clubs. I shall soon he speak
ing on the republican platform for McKlnloy
nnd Hobart and hope to meet many of you
personally. Yours sincerely ,
J. EU..BN FOSTER.

SCOTIA , Neb. , Sept. 2. To the Editor
of Tlio Uco : In the World-Herald of Au

Center , telling of the wonderful populist
rally held there on thn night of August
29. There was quite a crowd out , but It
was obtained by subterfuge. The mana
gers advertised Judge John II , Thompson
uf Grand Island , well knowing the people
would not turn out to hear Jim Swain. The
Judge was not here. Jim Swuln spoke and
ho was followed by W. II. Thompson , who
actually converted populists to McKlnloy.
instead of making votes for tlio Chicago
ticket several populists have enrolled
themselves In tlio MeKlnley club. Most
of the crowd came from North Loup.
Horace and Orceloy Center , The disturb
ance complained of was a row between

CATTMC The rerelpls today were 1 ( ' 31 ,
as aRalnst 2.S1S yesterday and 1,011 on Sat
urday of last week. The total for the
week ' was 12.M7 head , as compared with
1C.S79 last week nndJG.onz for the week pre
vious. These Hgiifcs show a heavy falling
off In the cattle receipts ? , the loss for the
week amounting to about -1,000 head.
Of the cattle hero today several loads
were consigned direct to the packers , leav
ing only 750 head on snle. Not enough
beef steers were ofTer.'d to make any test
of the market or establish prices. One
bunch of l.HKi-lh. beeves brought $1.05 , and
some pretty lair westerns , $3.10. The
prlees puld were probably not much differ
ent from yesterday.
Cows and heifers 'were also In very lim
ited supply and > ld at about steady prices.
1-eeders were slow and dull. U beliiR
Saturday no one seemed Inclined to buy
unless they could get sonic concession in
the price to make It an object.
The cattle market of the past week has
been In fair condition' on most days as re
gards the selling Interests. The demand
for all kinds has been active , and the ar
rivals on most days have met with ready
sale nt the prevailing prices. The great
scarcity of beef steers has been a serious
drawback ami has prevented there being
much activity In that department of the
market. Native fat cattle appear to be
about all marketed In this section of the
country , and the western range cattle arc
few of them good enough for the killers.
] ' /1lJlHh..cnrnfo(1 ! rattle have sold around
SI.OOJi 1.10 nnd good grass westerns up to
$ . ' , .ii. but there have been very few of ( hat
kind coming. The general tendency of the
market on fat cattle has necn upward , and
prices could safely he quoted irK higher for
the week.
Ilutchers' stock , such as cows and heifers
has been In active demand nnd moderate
supply nil the week , a combination of cir
cumstances that has Riven values n gradual
upward tendency. The advance for the
wcck ; bus been about ilie same as oil sUucrs.
A very considerable proportion of all the
cattle received .during the week consisted
of stockers and feeders , mostly western
feeders. Thu demand for that kind of cat-
tip was good nnd all the ai rivals sold freelv
\ alucs daring the first half of the week
showed some little : advance. The common
grades , however , coining' most too fast for
the demand , cnusuil a break on Friday.
The week closed about KG lower than the
high point of the week. Itepresentatlve

Considerable Interest has recently attached
to experiments which have been madn by
expert mcdlrnl men mid others well versed
In such matters for the purpose of deter
mining the elllcleney and destructlvcness of
modern military rifles. It was until re
cently claimed , says Ilio Now Orleans
I'lcayuno. that the moilern rllle , havlni ; a
Kreat Initial velocity , a very long rniiEO
and u projectile ot very small caliber , would
provo a humane weapon to the extent that
the wounds Indicted would ho less illlllcult
to heal and treat surgically than wounds
Initiated by the old-style rifles , with their
Inrso projectiles and j.igged penetration.
The bullets fired by the modern guns nro
long and nuirow , pointed with steel nnd
coated with a nickel and copper alloy. It
was thought that such a porjcctllo would
pass through the human body nnd tissues ,
thus indicting wounds that would bo easier
of treatment on the Held and moro readily
curable In hospital. It was , of course , ad
mitted that the percentage of killed outright
would ho larger , owing to the greater range
of modern weapons , and tlio probability tlmt
at close range a single ball would penetrate
several bodies before being stopped.
lleccnt experiments conducted In this
country by llrlng the Krag-Jorgcnseii rillo
now used by the army at corpses of men
and animals created the Impression that not
only would the destruction of life bo very * t
great through the perforation of vital or- a
gnus , but the percentage of serious nnd
latal wounds would be greatly Increased be
cause of the terrible destruction to bono
and tissue produced by thu passage through
the body of thcso high-power bullets. In
stead of the smnll , almost Imperceptible
wounds thnt were expected , the very rc-
yerso was found to be the case.
Tlio Spanish surgeons connected'with the
army lit Cuba have also reported IntorestlnR
icsnlts from their observation of the effects t
ot modern high-power rifles. The Spanish
army uses the Mauser ride , a modern arm
of great cffectivonesH. The surgooils duel
that the bullets from the Spanish rides am
terribly dostructlvo when flro.il at close
rnngo , the great velocity causing the bul
lets to produce frightful wounds. It ap
pears that the rapid passage of the bullets
through the bodies of these lilt produces
very much the same result as the perfora
tion of a closed box III I oil with ll < | iild or
seml-llqulcl. Apparently an Internal uxplo-
slon tnlccs place which inakcK woundB fatal
whle.li if Indicted with the old weapons
would have been scarcely serious.
On the other hand , the Spanish surgeons
found that wounds Indicted from n long
range showed none of the terrible symp
toms which those produced by bullets IIrod
at close rungo displayed. At long rangd
the Mauser bullets made small , clean
wounds , readily treated on the Held and
rapidly curort In hospital. It Is , therefore ,
only at long range that the Manser ride l.i
a humane weapon.
