CHICAGO. AUR. 20. Pork made n new low

Bold Importation had been countermanded
nrjil lower Wall street prices weakened
wh ( it lifer fnvorable opening , the clos <
InB prices for September showing n KC de

Thi Impetus given to wheat by the on
Kagunint of Bold for hnportntlon as re
ported yesterdhy afternoon was continued
this morning. The starting price for Sep
leniber nnd "December were each * c pel
Viu. hlRhcr than the closing rates o
the day before. One of the chief fncton
of the opening firmness was the strengtl
displayed In thu foreign markets. Liver
j > eel was quoted as opening lire nt Vid pel
cental advance nnd London nt f.d per quarter
tor hlfiher for American wheat. A para
Krnph from the Liverpool Corn Trade Newi
was being paraded near the openlnc whlcl
italil thai the general Impression there o
the size of this year's American wheat cro ]
was that It would be about 470OM.OiO bu
und that -wheat would be 5s per quartei
higher In the United Kingdom. They be
llc-vcd ll lo be malerlally umaller than that
The northwestern receipts commenced to
day to exhibit a contrast to those of thi
corresponding lime of the year before
There Is still some ot that great crop left
lint the dally exhibit of the Mlnnenpoll
wild Uululh receipts will , nevertheless
show a great discrepancy compared will
this yunfu. The two cities received 2X
cars today a ngalnst 408 cars a year apa
The Atlantic port clearances were equal ti
SM.WO bu. of Hour and wheat together
Closing cablegrams confirmed the strenptl
reported of the foreign markets at th <
opening , but the market exhibited nil It
rurength In taking the little Jump 11 dli
sit the start. After the ehrly advance busl
ness got slow and stocks getting wenkc
there was about as much effort to sell n
there had been to buy early and all thi
Improvement vras lost. A rumor that sonv
< if the gold engaged for Importation hni
J > een countermanded helped to depress th' '
jirlce near the end. There wns a notice
iiblc Jack of outside support nil day am
the consequent dullness of trading prc
.vented larger fluctuations than were re
corded. September opened about "Sic " hlpne
nt from f.fie to f.G'.4c , gradually weakened t' '
l Uc nnd closed Klendy nt KV c.
Corn was very dull and easier ; prices -wcr
strong early , Influenced largely byvheai
lUl wcro also helped by reports that th
crop -wits hardly so promising as a inont
ngo. Hut after the first bulge the markc
"began " to decline. September opened stron
nt 23Hc. Uc above yesterday's closing , an <
"touched 21c for a moment , but soon weak
cned nnd In the last half hour barel ;
touched 23c , tlie closing price.
Outs were fairly active and for the mos
Jiart ruled easier , although around th
opening , when shorts bought In some , ther
was u tendency to do better. Selling wa
snore general later and prices fell oft an
closed just where they did yesterday. Ex
changing between September nnd May -wa
a frequenl occurrence. September opene
n. shade higher nt from 17MrC to 176ic
touched 17 0 and declined to 17V.C , closln
steady nt that figure.
A small Klzed raid on September per !
early In the day -was the chief feature c
the trading In the provision pit. After 10
had been chipped off by a few small sales
John Cudahy's broker got at It with sledg
liammers and smashed the other lOc off 1
about two blows. This brought the prlc
ilown to K.NO. the lowest point ever reachec
The last ] Bc was recovered again and th
day s loss In September ppiJc was 10. Jant ;
ary. comrmred with yurfuh-day's closln
price left off 2ifcc lower. " Lard and rlli
were more lavored , the fair support give
these commodities "count'crnctlng" Ihe e !
feet of the weakness In pork , and closln
prices were unchanged to Z c higher.

to New York as evidence of the graxity of the
financial situation tn the United States. A largo
shipment of gold wus made today to Monte

its real destination was the United States. This ,
however , is not BO , although I gather that 1.-

of last wii'H. The receipts for the six
days promise to be the largest for any
week In alone time.
Today's , rc.celpts consisted almost en
tirely of western ranpe c ttle , natives be
ing few and far between. In laet. only one
load of tiornfed native steers was offered on
the market. It was a choice load and sold
at J4.1D. There were quite a good many
western steers In the yards good enough
for the killers , and while there were some
pretty decent cattle among them , those
on the rommonlsh older predominated.
The market was slow to open , buyers belni ;
determlnt-d upon securing a concession ,
while salesmen -were all iirlelng their hold
ings at steady prices. Owing to this differ
ence ex'lsttng between the buj-ing and sell
ings Interests the trade was slow and drag
ging all the morning. In the end the
beeves about all sold , the best bringing
close to steady prices and others going
5C10c lower.
About twenty-five loads of cows and
heifers were on sale. cond. liberal offerings
for tills market. 'The trade on that kind of
cattle was more active than on beef steers ,
ard a good shiire of the offerings changed
honds early. Good butchers' slock sold at
Just about steady prices , but the common
grades were a little easier.
The yards were full of feeders , the fresh
receipts being large In addition to the
heavy holdings of speculators. Four days
of heavy receipts In. succession have filled
every one up , th cattle coming In faster
than they have been going out. On ac
count of their heavy holding speculators
were very poor buyers this morning. They
appeared to be waiting for the country
buyers , a good many of whom were In the
yards , to do something first.- The market
was a drag all the morning , but later on , as
country buyers began to take hold , the
trade livened up somewhat and a peed
many cuttle.ohansed hands In n short time.
The market is at least 2."ic lower than un

KANSAS CITY. Aug. 20. The Wabash and
Santa Fe railroads today met the S-ccnl rate
per 100 on lard , tallow , oleo. oil , grease and
canned meats from Kansas City to the
Mississippi made yesterday by the Alton.
The Sauta Kc followed suit In part by making
the same rate on oleo. oil , lard , stcarlno and
tallow for export and a rate of I3Vs cents on
other packing house products. This Is In
the Interest of Atlantic against Gulf port
shippers and apparently is the beginning of
another Interesting freight rate war.
Western freight rotes arc now In a worse
condition than they have been for a long
time. The fight between the Chicago roads
and the Oult lines for the gialu trnfllo of the
transmlssouti territory Is being waged with
sreat bitterness and nt prebent the Gulf
lines seem to be having the best of the
struggle. Although rates have been .reduced
one-half between Chicago and the Missouri
river and one-third between Chicago and the
seaboard , there is much of the grain going
by the New Orleans and the Galvcston gate
ways. The western roads do not at present
see how they can reduce rates more without
losing money and they are anxious that
their eastern connections khnll come to their
relief. The latter , however , seem to be
fairly well satisfied with their action In re
ducing the rates by one-third and the pres
ent Indications are that the western roads
will be left to work out their salvation In
the best way they can.

Commercial club rooms Wednesday noon and
talked over many minor matters connected
with the great parades. Among other things
the work of selecting the ushers for the ball

now under way. They will all be taken fro.n
among the well known young men of the
city and it Is hoped to have the list completed
In a few days.
Notice as received from W. < U. Doddrldgo
of the Missouri Pacific that his road would
transport free of charge the troops from
Fort Crook on the night of the great civic
parade and return them on the same terms
when the parade , was over. The , troops
had previously consented to come up and
under this arrangement It Is assured that
all of th'e Twenty-second Infantry except
the small number -necessary to guard the
post will be present and participate in the
parade. The board by a unanimous vote
tendered Its thanks to the Missouri Pacific
for its generous offer.
