PATTL12 The liberal run of cattle whict
set In on Monday continued today , tht
freh receipts Iwlng reported at 2.K3S. tu
against 2.CSJ yesterday and l.OSS on Thurs
day of last wcuh. The receipts for thf
week to date nre ll.GSH iieafl. ns compared
with G ; < ir.2 for the corresponding four days
of last wivK. The receipts for the slJ
days promise to be the largest for nn >
wi-ek in. along time.
Today's re.celpte consisted almost en-
tlrely of western ranee c ttle , natives be
ing few and far between. In fact , only one
load tif ciornfed nullve steers was offered or
the market. It wis a choice load and sole
at J4.1S. There were quite a good man >
western steers In the yards good enougli
for the killers , and while there were soim
pretty decent cattle among them , those
on the rommonl.- older predominated ,
The marki-t was slow to open , buyers being
determined upon securing a concession ,
while salesmen were all pricing their hold
ings nt steady prices. Owing to this difference -
ence existing between the buying nnd sell-
Ings Interests the trade was slow and drag
ging all the morning. Jn the end the
beeves about all sold , the best bringing
close to steady prices and others going
ofilOc lower.
Aliout twenty-five loads of cows nnd
helft'rs were on sale , irond , liberal offerings
for this market. The trude on thHt kind of
cattle was more active than on beef steers.
ard n good share of the offerings changed
hnnus early. Good butchers' stock sold at
just about steady prices , but the common
Grades were a little easier.
The yards were full of feeders , the fresh
receipts being large in addition to the
heavy holdings of speculators. Four days
of heavy receipts In. succession have filled
every one up , th * cattle coming In faster
than they have been going out. On ac
count of their heavy holding speculators
were very poor buyers this morning. Thev
appeared to be v.-aitlng for the country
buyers , a KOod many ofwhom were In the
yards , to do something first.- The market
was a drag all the morning , but later on , as
country buyers begun to take hold , the
trade livened up somewhat nnd n good
many cuttle. changed hands in n short time.
The market Is at least 25e lower than an
Monday. Representative sales :

KANSAS CITY , Aug. 20. The AVabash and
Santa Ke railroads today met thn 8-cent ralo
per 100 on lard , tallow , oleo. oil , grease anil
canned meats from Kansas City to the
Mississippi made yesterday by the Alton.
The Santa Fe followed suit In part by making
the same rate on oleo , oil. lard , stcarlno and
tallow for export and n rote of 13 4 cents on
other packing house products. This Is In
the Interest of Atlantic against Oulf port
shippers and apparently Is the beginning ot
another Interesting freight rate war.
Western freight rates arc now In a worse
condition than they have been for a long
times. The fight ttotwcrn the Chicago roads
and the Oulf lines tor the gtaln traffic of the
transmlssouri territory Is being waged with
great bitterness and at prrscnt the Gulf
lines seem to by having the best ot the
struggle. Although rates have been reduced
one-halt bet u ecu Chicago and the Missouri
river and one-third between Chicago and the.
seaboard , there Is much ot tbe grain going
by the New Orleans and the Galveston gate
ways. The western roads do not at present
see how they can reduce rates more without
losing money and they are anxious that
their eastern connections thall como to their
relief. The latter , however , seem to bo
fairly well satisfied with their action in re
ducing the rates liy one-third and the pres
ent indications are that the western roads
will be left to work out their salvation in
the best way they can.
