The coiirpo of trade during the pnst week
uriiH Inclined to bo slow nnd dull In all the
different departments of the Jobbing busl-
jiess. but when It Is taken Into consideration
that this Is the month of August great al
lowances must be made. This Is the month
when the Jobber , as a rule , looks for very
little business , lie may sell some goods for
future delivery , which meann that the buyer
may take the goods later In the fall. If ho
does not conclude to cancel the order , but
the nrtunl amount of business transacted
thin month Is always small OH compared
with other months of the year.
The grocers are putting out it considerable
volume of goods and the dry goods people
nnd boot nnd shoo dealers report u satis
factory trnde , Lumber Is slow nnd hard
ware. Is not very active , owing to the small
amount of building going on at the present
time.
Capital Is timid niul new ventures do not
materialize- very often ; In fact every one
appears to bo content for the present to
allow business to run along In the present
channels until the future can bo foretold
with greater accuracy.
The crop reports give promise of a very
largo yield ot corn this season , which w
exceed tin ) record of a year ago. This will
certainly give business to the railroads ,
and. oven If prices should continue low. It
must bring In a good deal ot money to the
farmers. In this state the crop Is prac
tically beyond damage possibilities and It
may bo said that the prosperity of Je-
hrasku Is Insured for the year to come , at
least If the. general business condition of
the country will only show some Improve
ment.
ment.STOCK YAUD8 THADH SLOW.
At South Omaha this has been a dull
month so far , owing to the fact that It Is
tlin betwoen-seasons time In tlm rattle
trade. The cornfed eat tie from the farms
and feed lots of the stain hnvo been ex
hausted , wlillo the range cattle from the
western stales and territories have not as
yet commenced to come foi ward In any tin ig
like/ largo numbers. On u good many days
of thu past week there have not been
enough fat cattle In the yards to really
ntnkn a market. At the same tlmo the de
mand remains good and packing houses
hiivo been forced to go out Into other
markets and buy cattle In order to keep
their houses running. . , . , . . ,
the
lly next month It Is expected that
range catllo will bo coming freely nnd then
business ought to tnko on decidedly more
life nt the packing town. All reports agree
that the feed on the ranges has been ex
ceptionally good this season and opera torn
on the market generally are expecting that
the rattle will bo very good when they do
In Vplte of the fact that business has
lieen so fiulet during the past two weeks
or more the receipts since the first of the
year fool up a little larger than for the
corresponding period of last year.
ci-BAruxas.
During the past seven months of the
present year the total clearings nt Omaha
hnvo amounted to $13i.04M3. ( ; as against
J1C003S2S1 for the corresponding period of
ISflS and $143,230.020 for the corresponding
period of 1S31. These llsures , while show
ing a gain In the clcarlnsis this year , mill
show n deficiency nn compared with 1S3I.
nnd the decrease shown would bo still
greater If we worn to go back to ISM.
Taking the country as a whole , there has
been a t/radual recovery In the clearings
slnco 1S9I. a small gain being shown for
each year , but the rerord Is still behind
ISO. , by a good many billions of dollars.
An Intercsllng fnct brought out by the
report of the clearings Is that the low
( point In the country nt large was reached
In 1S9I. but Omaha held up a good deal
better than many other cities that year
nnd It was not until the crop failure of IS'J-
nmile Itself fell that this city experience * :
thu full force of UIR hard limes. For that
reason the low point was not reached here
wlH last year.
AMONG THU MANUFACTUMKllS.
In manufaetnilng circles the Interesting
question the past week has been repnrdliiK
the coming state fair and the kind of an
exhibit that the Manufacturers' association
should have. Yesterday the members ol
the association , who will nmko nxhlblls
met at the fair grounds In company with
Secretary Holmes and laid off llm space
nnd slr.ed up the work of ruttl'iir their goods
in place.
During the past weelc the secretary o
the Manufacturers' association spent somt
tlmo In Nebraska City and ho speaks In the
highest terms of the thrift nnd enterprise
of the people of that plncu. Mr. Holmes
Biys that he noted a number of new resi
liences In course of construction that wouli
bo n credit to nnv city In tlio country Thi
new library building especially deserves no
tlce , according to the opinion of the gentle
man qiinlcd. The people raised by sub
stirlptlon $1,000 , with which they purrlmsei
a lot nnd Joy Morton Is furnishing the
money for the building.
The Nebraska City Canning company Is
putting up the product of 101 acres of swec
corn and Is very much pleased with thq
quality of the goods this year , the con
being plump and white.
Tim Cereal mills people have moved Into
a new olllcc , the building formerly used n
a creamery having been lilted up for Ilia
purpose. They start Ihelr endue on Mon
day morning nnd do not shul down untl
Saturday night , the mill being run day am
nlu'hl.
The starch factory was closed down for i
short tlmo to give opportunity for necessao
lepalrs , hut It has been operated full forci
nil the year. I nst season the compnii )
biilll on an addition Mxlf.O fcnt , flvo slorlos
In height , but It has been proven that this
does not afford any too much room.
The Dnllenty Plow company has hud a
good trade In plows , niul now as It Is on
of the season on that class of goods the
company Is giving lit ) attention to the
mnnufncturo of a patent emlgnto fnr fnrn
wngoiiB. During the coming season the
company will push the Bale of riding cultl
vntors and II Is expected to giv.itly Inereas
the output of thai Implement.

The corn market exhibited very little

The New York Financier says this week : Tlio
total cash holdings of thi- New York clearing
house banks , according to the statement for the
week ending August 15 , l ! "i are JlSli.2IS.400. Of
this amount nine banks alone hold JM.flM.oDO. or
over 45 per cunt. In view. of this condition , It Is
not surprising that thcro Is a continued tendency
ti > call In loans. Some of the Institutions arc
below the legal reserve , and tie ; demand for
funds from the Interior Is not dlinlnls.icil. Tlio
excess reserve of the clearing house banks Is
lower than It has been for'over two years , but
when It Is recalled that during the correspond
ing week three years T > gf > the hanks were J12-
045 , SOO under their legal requirements , their Im
measurably superior standing nt picscnt will
be better understood.
In fnct. the 1 > nnk statement for the current
week Is unusually logical , and bhowa the effect
of changes that have been going on for over
two weeks past. The decre.iso In loans probably
reflects the liquidation' ' action , enforced through
the necessity of replenishing the reserve , and
the loss In cash represents the heavy demand
on th banks from tlieTnlerlor , which 1ms been
n factor In the situation fur several weeks past.
There seems to be no jrrobanlllty that the state
ment next wpek will show results much different
from thofce of the current week , nnd thft period
of higher money rates will probably continue
until -itlcully adjusted to an easier situa
tion through domestic measures , or the attrac
tion of foreign money by the tempting interest
rates. - -

Engineer W. A. Johnston of No. 80. Fire

also Hr.ikcman Overly of No. SO. Postal
Clerk Ormoiul was slightly Injured. The
engineer ot the freight had orders to take
the siding at Torch Hill. It Is Impossible
to conjecture why ho did not do so. The
fact that ho was not far cast of the siding
leads to the supposition that his Intention
was to run beyond nnd back In on the sid

aged but the other cars of the passenger
train were not Injured.
