THE OMAHA SUNDAY BEL
vc
A NEW AFRICAN STORY.
HAGGARD.
ii Began August 2d and Will Run 12 Weeks. ,
|
TN this story Mr. Hazard relates the terrible expert-
* cnces of the Reverend Thomas Owen , who , persuaded
that Faith , if strong enough , could accomplish all things
even to the performance of miracles , gave up a comfort
able living in the Church of England to practice liis
preaching among the Children of Fire.
He went knowing that this savage African tribe ,
under the spell of the Wizard Hokosa , had put to death
the last "White Messenger" because he could not prove
his religion by raising from the dead his companion
whom they had slain before his very eyes. This he
learned through a third missionary whom they sent
b ack to dispeople with this message :
'Tell them that having proved you to be liars they
dealt with you as all honest men seek that all liais
should be dealt with. Tell them that they desire to
hear more of this matter , and if one can be sent to them
who has no false tongue , who in all things fulfills the
promises of his lips , that they will harken to him ani
treat "him well ; "but that for such as you they keep a
spear. "
It was this challenge that the Reverend Thomas
Owen accepted ; and in this serial is told the wonderful
story of his single-handed conflict with the Children ol
Fire and his almost miraculous success in baffling their
prophets and confounJing their Wizardry converting
first the king and then the ojeai body of his people ;
among others his son and rightful heir to the tlirone.

quarter and half mile , both of which -went
to Carl Theme , a Louisville boy , who has
come Into prominence this season C. C.

only prominent men who failed to qualify
In the trial heats , which were run In the

The men began to string out as noon ts the
pistol -was fired , Bald In fifth place , Sangcr
nnd Butler well back There was scarcely
nny change until Sanger started on Ills
run from ninth place on the back stretch of
the first lap The others were slow In
making their sprint , Bald missing the op
portunity to tack on as Sangcr passed him
As they bunched at the head of the stretch ,
Tom Butler set a hot pace for Sanger , but
Bald was pocketvd Sanger had made Ills
start too early and was not equal to the
pace nt which Butler Lame home The
latter landed the money a comparative ! }

In the two-mile national championship
Cooper had the polo. The pacing was done
by Slaver and Wlnselt on singles Cooper
caught the pacemaker , -within fifty jards
and Bald wns at Ills rear wheel , while
"Plnkey" Bliss filed Into third place The
others slrnng In Indian file Thus they
pedalled for five laps At the last quar
ter Ealon made his sprlul from last place ,
Nat Butler tacking onto him as he passed
These ttvo challenged the leaders at the
head of Ihe slretch , but Ihe great pair had
Ihe race ivtll in hand. II was n battle
between Cooper and Bald to the tape , Bliss
clinging to third place like grim death
Cpoper started In. upon such n spurt as he
has seldom been called -upon to make , do
ing the last twelfth in 0-074-3 This won
the race for him , and with it the first
national cliamplonshlp medal nw arded at the
meet.
Johnny Johnson took his usual shy nt
