NI3W'OUK , Aug. 7 U. a. Dun & Co.'s
weekly review of trade , which issues to
morrow , will nayr The sensational collapse
of the speculators at Chicago who con
trolled the Diamond Match and Now York
lllxcult stocks , and had hoisted them to
fancy prices , with the consenuont closing of
the Chicago Stock exchange for a period In
definite , though followed by remarkably
few failures , brings n sudden change In
monetary conditions throughout the coun
try. At least a month earlier than had
been expected Chicago 1ms drawn heavily
upon Illinois bank balances , nnd with
drawals of other western funds may natur
ally result. Europe was also moved to sell
American stocks rather freely , so that the
average of sixty most active railroad stocks
fell about 2.IS per share and the average
of trust stocks about t.M. The Instant co-oiiera-
tlon of the money Interests at Chicago to re
strict the disturbance deserved praise , and did
much good , but It Is not possible to avoid some
fhoclc to public confidence , and a ijulck tighten
ing of eastern money markets has already shut
oft commercial loans almost entirely. Tlie col-
Inpso aluo Increased the caution of bankers and
others regarding loans on securities of a similar
character.
It l Important that the Increane of merchandise
exports J&CO.WO or 12 per cent over last year , for
the week nnd the decrease of Imports $700,000 , or
7.7 per cent , still continues to limit the sum
payable abroad. In live week * the Increnso of ex
ports has been $3.400,00. or 16 per cent , and too
decrease of Imports J9.SCO.OCO. or IS per cent ,
which help * to balance accounts.
The movement of wheat Is again large , At
lantic exports being 1,761.033 bu. for the week.
Hour Included , ngaln.it 731MO bu. last year , and
since July I Ss : > S,70t bu. , ngnlnst 4,728.fll9 bu. last
year. Conflicting crrp reports arc as numerous
und noisy as ever , but the moro reliable mark
up winter wheat to 300,000.000 bu. and the. move
ment tends to sustain sucb estimates , for since
.luly 1 western receipts have been 17,833,33 ! bu. ,
acralnst 9.330.020 bu. last year. It Is not easy to
believe that with prices to cents lower than a
year ngo farmers have marketed from a smaller
crop so per cent more wheat. Corn Is also mov
ing rnpldly. with western receipts of 4.S73.00S bu. ,
against 1.CG1.074 bu. last year. The situation ns
to cotton is doubtless critical. Kxtiemely hot and
Ury weather bos done serious harm , and the
price bas risen almost beyond precedent , ? jo on
Wednesday alone , end the alarm will nt least
bo of service to planters In giving them better
prices. %
Labor Is more disturbed than usual. The great
Btrlke of garment workers lias gieatly extended ;
the strike nt Cleveland has broken out again nnd
Involves teveral other branches of labor ; Iron
furnace men of the Shenango valley resist a
reduction to t.io wanes ot May , 15,03 , though the
Mahonlns valley workers do not ; the Iron works
throughout the country arc trying to cut dawn
the cost 111 order to keep In operation ; the Iron
mines of the Oogcblc range arc stopping ; the
suspension of cotton mills has Iwconte more
general , nnd over 1,000.000 , rplndlcs are said to
bo Idle at Fall Illver nlone , nnd probably three-
eighths or more of the entire producing ca
pacity In the country ; the rubber works have
mostly stopped , nnd a number of woolen mills
also. Evidently both the working forces and
their wagi-s have been reduced. The Iron mar
kets grow less demoralized In tone , bccaue all
the associations decided to maintain prices for
this month , but the markets uie not stronger
In volumes of onb'rs or purchases. Pressure
to sell , even nt concessions , la the prevailing
rule , and prices are almost nominal. Minor
metals are generally weik : , but prices of coke
und cOnl are. held without variation. Curtail
ment of production In cottons does not bring a
stronger market , nnd a few quotations are re
duced. Sales of light weight woolens are dis
appointing and mulnly of cheap grades , and , In
some cases , prices are ngnln reduced. Hales of
wool for the week were 2.710.4m Ib3. . uulnst 8-
233.300 Ibi. last year , und 9,271.700 Ib3. In 18.12.
Failures for the week bavo been 240 In fie
United States , against 227 last year , nnd 32 In
Canada , against 43 last year.

NKW YORK , Aug. 7. The stock market today
was unusually active nnd displayed a degree of
weakness that surprised even the most com-

severe nnd only tlie conservatism ot the leaders
of that fnctlon prevented open dcmor.illzatton , ns
the only support wns by covering purchases.
Liquidation was the order of the day In all

CATTLE After making allowance for
th < > cattle consigned direct to the puckers
only about a thousand head of all klndu
were on sale , The market , as a. wholu , was
fairly active nnd an early clearance wan
affected.
There were more and better corn-fed
iiteers than for Hi'vernl days past and thn
DfterliiBH met with ready sale , nt good
sirens prices.
The supply of butchers' stork consisted
of only a few odds anil ends of cow Hlurf ;
nil told , not over two to three loads. They
brought Rood , strong prices.
There were more feeders than anythlnB
else In tile yards , but none too many , ni
the demand was fair und the yards were
aoon cleared. There were some stockerB
that sold at prices that made the market
look higher , but there have been no sueh
cattle hero for bonio time. Steady to strong
would probably about express the situa
